The training lasted for days, Salla already knew the basics
otherwise it would have taken much longer. After a refresher course
that Viran used to test Salla's knowledge he begun the serious
training. He would surprise her, whither she was sleeping or eating
it did not matter. She had to be prepared as a real enemy would not
wait for her to be ready.
It made Salla feel tired and it hit her heavily, the realization
that there were people out there who would try to kill her. It was
easy to forget sometimes, so far from the remnants of her birth
place, but even there it was distant. After all, on that horrible,
blood soaked day they weren't focusing on her, but her entire
village. An awe full thought to have but she couldn't help it and
that made her feel shame and guilt.
The days blended into one another,
training and careful listening. Salla hadn't noticed it before, but
there were always fearful whispers of the knights and their captain
the drive and control behind their actions. Whispers that silenced
quickly if they thought any strangers listened. Everyone feared the
knights, except perhaps the knights themselves.
It was a rainy dreary day the day that
Viran decided that Salla had had enough training. He and Diamond had
decided to leave the next day and invited Salla to join them. Salla
had often wondered why they were journeying and saw this as a chance
to ask.
“The reason? To find my sister.” Viran had replied
with a sad smile as he carefully checked the supplies. “She
vanished three years ago from our home, the city of Ekcelion, during
an uprising.”
“An uprising?” Salla asked.
“Yes, we were a merchant family living in a city ruled by a
tyrant. People were unhappy, many dieing, finally they grew tired of
the state of things and revolted against lord Coricy, in the chaos my
sister vanished. I met Diamond while searching for her.”
Diamond nodded, “Yes, he was bruised and weary when a chance
happening brought us together. I had been searching for my party, as
I was a mercenary, though I fear I am too soft hearted for the job!”
Diamond laughed briefly, before he shook his head and continued on,
“I am traveling with Viran because I enjoy his company. I have
no other real reason.”
Salla had slept deeply that night, an odd thing she later felt.
The vague stirring of guilt that she could not seem to get rid of.
The feeling that she should not be alive, should have fallen with her
village.
It was still raining, still dreary when they left the town they
had spent so much time in. The chain mail felt heavy on Salla's
shoulders as she begun the trek.

The reconstruction was going slowly, each wall that went up seemed
like a major accomplishment. Only four houses rebuilt so far, on the
foundations of past homes. Only two more would really be needed, and
even then it was doubted they would be used.
Tanait felt tired, as if she had raised each wall on her own. It
seemed endless, the fields of destruction, remnants of so many ended
lives. For what!? She wanted to scream, Why?! We had not done
anything to you! We simply wanted to live! We bothered no one, our
village of no importance to any but the people who lived there, Why!?
Maybe one day she would gain the answers to her questions. Maybe
one day...
