Chapter Seven
I had two days of blissful freedom, and then was back out, and delerious for an uncounted amount of days. Bert wasn\'t gone all of those days. He\'d continued to yell at me. Sometimes in Italian, but most the time in english so I could understand him. He cursed my stupidity most the time. He finally relaxed when I promised him that I would make sure to shut Jon up before he narked us out. I then had w daw days of delerium and rest. When I woke, Jon was there, but Bert wasn\'t.
Jon looked nervous, and a little unsure if he should be near me. I chuckled at that.
\"It\'s all right Jon. I\'m not gonna bite ya. In fact, I don\'t think I\'ve ever bitten anyone.\" I say.
Jon nods, and relaxes a bit. You bit Max yesterday.\" He says, going to sit in a chair, I assume.
\"I did?\" I ask, as I struggle to sit up.
It was useless though. I was still strapped into the jacket, plus I had restrains on my ankles, knees, and one across my forehead.
\"They strapped you down after you bit Max. You were stark raving mad. I caught the end of the events though. I can remove the restraints , Tom. But ONLY if you promise not to go crazy on me.\" Jon says.
\"I wouldn\'y hurt you Jon. You\'re my friend.\" I say.
\"You already have. You kicked me yesterday when I was trying to help you, Tom.\" he says.
I feel back immediately. \"I\'m sorry. I didn\'t mean to. Did I hurt you to bad?\" I ask.
\"No, just a little bruise is all.\" Jon says.
\"I\'m really sorry. I didn\'t wanna hurt you. I see you as a friend, Jon.\" I say to him.
I can see a quick movement from the corner of my eyes. I try to turn my head to look, but can\'t. Jon was watching me, being rather observant.
\"See Bert?\" he asks.
\"I think so. He\'ll never leave, Jon. It doesn\'t matter you give me.\" I say.
\"Why won\'t he leave?\" he asks me.
\"Cause I don\'t want him to. He\'s my friend. He takes care of us.\" I reply.
Jon nods, but says nothing. He comes over to the bedside to start undoing the restraints. It\'s then that I see the bruise I gave him.
\"I kicked you in the face?\" I ask.
I can hear Bert snicker, \'Fool!\' he says.
Jon nods. \"Yep. But I don\'t blame you.\" he says.
\"You don\'t?\" I ask astonished.
\"Nope. I blame Chris. He was supposed to hold your feet, but failed. Your leg flew free, I rushed in to help, and find out what was going on, and thanks to Chris, I causght your foot in my right eye.\" Jon replies.
The restraint from my head was removed, and I moved my head around a bit, cracking my neck as I did.
\'A little stiff, Tomas?\' Ber teased.
I glared at him. \"Jon, y\'know I\'m crazy, or so they say, and I\'m gonna have moments when I just star talking to myself, right?\" I half state, half ask.
\"Yeah...\" Jon says.
\"This is one of those moments.\"
And with out another word to Jon, I turned to Bert.
\"Shut up Bert! You\'re the one that put me in this situation! And now you\'re not helping matters any!\" I said to him.
\'Did you wake up on the wrong side of the drugs?\' Bert taunted.
\"Keep pushing, Bert. And the next time I wake up from the drugs, it\'ll be on the right side, and you\'ll be gone for good!\" I threatened.
His smile faded, and anger flickered in his eyes.
\'You wouldn\'t.\' he said.
\"I would. Now, behave yourself!\" I say to him.
\'You\'re getting brave, Tomas. But, we\'ll talk later.\' he said.
And just like that, he was gone. I look at Jon, who was looking between me, and where Bert had been. I can tell he\'s not sure what to think.
\"He\'s gone now. I made him mad. Sorry if I freaked you out.\" I say.
Jon shook his head. \"Not the first patient I\'ve had with an invisible friend, and I\'m sure you won\'t be the last.\" Jon said.
He undid the ankle restraints. I was quiet as I thought. \'Yes, I will be. Your days are numbered.\'
\"Want me to tell you about Bert, or Chewelah?\" I ask him.
I can tell he doesn\'t really want to know about either. But, eventually he will hear about both. And when it\'s all oer with, and all my secrets are told, Jon will die. I promised Bert, and I can\'t go back on that promise. Bert wouldn\'t like that very much.
\"How about you finish telling me about Chewelaj when I come back later tonight. My shift is over. But I will only allow you to tell me on one condition.\" He says.
\"What?\" I ask
\"No solitary confinement.\" He says.
\"Deal. I\'ll see you later tonight.\" I say.
