Chapter Seven

Jimmy did not like ships and he could not imagine Sunny ever having been on this one. The entire ship gave him the creeps, and that was saying a lot, considering what he\'d done to the man who was responsible for the ship.

\"So, Boss,\" Marky said, holding a small note pad, \"We got seven hundred cases of booze. Most of it seems like it\'s good shit too, Russian vodka, French brandy. There\'s enough here to supply every speak easy in New York state for a year.\"

Jimmy\'s right hand man smiled, a happy shark smile. The cops looking at the ship earlier had already been paid off. All they had to do is get the shit off by morning and they\'d taken themselves a fortune. \"Want the boys to get it moved?\"

\"Any sign of him?\" Jimmy asked, not able to bring himself to touch the paperwork or personal effects of the late and would be crime boss.

\"Of who, Boss? Oh, the accountant. No, no sign of him, but there was a lot of violence here. He might be with the fishes.\" The last word trailed slowly, losing volume as Marky took in the look on his boss\' face. \"Boss, you\'re really spinning over this accountant, aren\'t you? I mean, he\'s just the accountant. He can\'t know all that much.\"

Jimmy didn\'t smoke, but now would have been a good time to start, he thought. He ran an empty hand through black hair. When he spoke, it was low, making the room feel even more ominous to him than it had been. \"He knows everything, Marky. Nothing\'s gonna be right till I found him.\"

\"Shit, Boss, it ain\'t like he\'s a dame or something.\" Marky said, trying to understand the change in his boss.

\"No,\" Jimmy said, glad Sue had understood. \"No, he ain\'t no dame.\"

\"Boss?\" Marky asked, looking at Jimmy as if maybe he had a fever, or some communicable disease.

Jimmy shrugged and made for the door. When he got to the deck again, the ship had been moved to the dock and a polished black car sat there, a dark suited man leaning against the bonnet.

He saw Jimmy about the same time Jimmy saw him. The man moved away from the car, opened the backseat door, and motioned politely for Jimmy to join the occupant.

The dock lost the chill. Salted air settled across Jimmy\'s cheek. The end of the world had come. Sicily rarely touched his world in New York. The Family approved of what he did, or it had. Standing straight, elegant as a lion walking into the coliseum for the final game, Jimmy crossed to the dock. Knuckles scrapped, dark circles under his eyes, flecks blood from Sunny\'s assailant dry on his pants, James Baldassario Caravello got into the car where he\'d hear his fate from the Family. Even lions have limits.
