“Why are we doing this again?” I asked, mildly exasperated at being dragged around.

“I told you already! Because this place has the best coffee ever made! And we’re dodging the zombies!” she said, happiness oozing out of her voice and a bounce finding its way into her step.

“In the middle of the night?”

She didn’t reply.

I sighed and trudged behind her, moving branches out of my way by moonlight and stepping over plants as we approached the café, immediately moving past the entrance and moving towards the rear of the place. The gaudy pink building merged into a beautiful, waist-height cast iron fence that was flanked by a way too chipper waitress.

“Hi there! I’m going to go get you some menus! Sit where ever you want!” the woman in the frilly apron said, the too huge smile never leaving her face and her eyes as wide as a speed addict’s. She bounded off in the vague direction of the building and we ignored her exit.

The patio was packed. There were cast iron tables and chairs nearly touching on every inch of the concrete slab. Every chair was taken by men and women in fancy clothing, sipping their lattes and chatting about whimsical things. Around the place were trees, trees, and more trees. They were only oaks. Oaks that smelled like evergreens. Pines, specifically. So my friend had dragged me to a café in the middle of the forest at midnight to get coffee and dodge zombies.

Lovely.

I took a deep breath through my nose and out of my mouth, getting a huge whiff of the evergreen-scented oaks, and turned a stare onto my friend. She just grinned and walked through the gate. I followed with an irritated stare to her back.
Once my feet hit the center of the place, I froze. My mind went pleasantly white and oozed around like warm molasses. The zombies beat us here.

Oh shit.
