Chapter 6:

They agreed to go to separate hotels, Jeremy, Miriam, Russell and Midge to the nearest little three-star one, while Elliot and Calom went to one further away (after finding that the first two they came across were full) one that was tiny and unclean but had plenty of empty rooms for them to pick from.

Elliot led the way up the narrow staircase and unlocked the door that’s green paint was peeling and cracked. As they entered the room, Calom scrunched up his sensitive nose and eyed the poorly made beds, “Man that was the last cash I had that Miriam gave me” Elliot muttered as he looked into his now empty wallet. Calom shoved him further into the room so he could get by and dumped the bags by the nearest bed, flopping onto it with a sigh. “I suppose we can’t expect luxury at the price they ask for it can we?” he said dryly, studying the greying wallpaper. Elliot shut and locked the door, throwing the keys onto the little stand next to the other bed, and then kicked off his shoes.

“How are you feeling anyway now?” he then asked after a few moments of silence. He was concerned at how quiet Cal had been, it was something that always made him uneasy. Not that he wanted them to bicker all the time, but he missed the interaction, the teasing and the way Calom got wound up so easily and his pretty eyes practically sparked in his anger.

“I’m fine. I don’t want to talk about it so don’t ask, alright?” Calom replied, sounding a little irritated. Elliot shrugged and began to peel off his clothes, until he was only wearing his underwear, at which point Calom made sure to be lying facing away from him. He smirked and purposefully walked over into the teen’s line of sight to rummage through the bags next to Calom’s bed. “I haven’t seen you have a smoke since back at the last town” he commented as his fingers brushed the half-empty packet of cigarettes in the bag. “Well, I haven’t exactly had chance to and I haven’t really fancied one since what happened with Mickey. I want to try and cut down anyway, with Miriam looking ready to burst” Calom replied, rolling onto his back as a blush threatened to take over his entire face. Elliot chuckled and trudged back over to his own bed, crawling into it and closing his eyes.

For the next couple of days they stayed at their hotels, Miriam drawing out more cash to dish out to them, and they met up in the local park at night, gathering on a large patch of unkempt grass, sitting there in awkward silence. Calom sat away from them as usual, lying back with his arms crossed under his head, looking up at the dark sky, skin tingling as the moonlight caressed him. Elliot kept glancing over him, wishing he wouldn’t distance himself from the pack.

They all looked in the direction of the entrance to the park when a group of six teenagers came in, shouting swear words and laughing hysterically. It took them a few minutes of stumbling around before they noticed Jeremy and the others sitting to the right. One of the boys murmured something and then sauntered over with an exaggerated limp, blonde hair greasy and short on his large head. “Yo, got a light?” he asked Calom, the one lying on his own looking as if he hadn’t a care in the world. “Nope” Calom replied without looking up. The boy’s friends had drifted closer, looming behind him as if he couldn’t handle one lone teen without his buddies to back him up. “One of you guys gotta have a light” he snorted, sounding sceptical and a little impatient. Calom sighed and sat up, eyes glinting yellow for a few seconds as he looked up at the boy, who frowned and backed up with a sudden feeling of nervousness. The yellow could have been explained away as some weird contacts he supposed, but he couldn’t explain the feeling of unease and irrational fear that crept through him at the way Calom looked at him.

He swore under his breath and turned away, gesturing for his friends to follow, who all shouted and complained that they hadn’t had any fun. All of them had been itching for a fight, or at least to stir up a little trouble, it was the only kick they got out of life because they had nothing else better to do.

“That was unlike you Cal, you didn’t lose your temper with them” Russell commented, sending him a friendly grin. Calom shrugged; found himself pulling out the packet of cigarettes in his pocket and getting one out. He frowned down at it and then put it back in the packet with a sigh, glancing at the pack and for once wishing he could sit among them, but Midge was staring at him with hard eyes, looking annoyed that Russell had acknowledged him. He noticed Elliot staring at him as well, only with a completely different kind of gaze. He blushed, and turned away from them again, irritated at how he reacted to the guy he had once hated. Elliot was being too nice lately, kept trying to get close, but Calom would smack his hand away or shrug out from under his arm. He didn’t think he would miss the way Elliot teased and insulted him, but it was actually starting to annoy him more now that he was being all nice.

Elliot chuckled under his breath when Calom turned away from him, wondering whether he was blushing again. He was finding it quite fun being nice and affectionate with Calom, watching the way he’d get all flustered and push him away, mumbling excuses about having to do something or go somewhere. He knew Calom was freaking out over what had passed between them in the car just two days ago, knew he was determined to pretend it never happened at all. Elliot thought it was quite amusing how he jumped away from his touches as if his hand was a red hot poker, and though he was enjoying winding him up a little by making him uncomfortable, Elliot wanted him to react, wanted him to give in like he had for that all too short time in the car. Every time he thought about it he got hard. It wasn’t very good walking around with a boner all day, though he didn’t mind if Calom noticed…he was quite disappointed that he hadn’t yet. The teen spent too much time trying not to look at him at all.

When they returned to their hotels, they were all tired and agitated, their skin itching. The change was calling to them all, but in this town they had nowhere safe enough to shift and run about, no trees to cover them.

As Jeremy curled up with Miriam, and Calom and Elliot collapsed on their separate beds, Midge sat on the floor looking in the little compact mirror she held in her left hand. The dark brown eyes looking back at her were sad and distant, and it made her have some wild thought that Mickey was trapped in the mirror, looking out at her from a prison he could never escape from. When she shook her head and blinked, tears spilled from her eyes, and she hurriedly wiped them away with the back of her free hand and snapped the compact shut. Her fingers curled around it tightly as sobs rose and shook her body. She had always told her little brother they’d be safe with a pack, that it was better and easier than being on their own. He hadn’t wanted to, but once they had joined Jeremy’s pack, he’d loved it. She chucked the mirror away and heard a crack.

She stood up and wiped at her face again, and then hurried out the room across to Russell’s. She stared at the door for a while before knocking timidly, wondering whether he would be awake. A thud made her jump, and she smiled a little when she heard him cursing, and then the door was unlocked and opened and he stood before her in his t-shirt and boxers, hair slightly ruffled. “I’m sorry to wake you, I just wanted some company” she said, beginning to feel guilty. Russell smiled and tugged her inside so he could shut the door, turning to look down into her small face, her eyes were red-rimmed and her eyelashes wet. “Are you alright?” he pulled her into his arms when she shook her head and began to sob again, and she buried her head in his chest, loving how she fit against him so well. “I miss him so much, I should have been there for him” she muttered, licking salty tears from her lips. Russell sighed and eased them down onto the edge of his bed,  “Don’t feel guilty, there was nothing that could be done. I saw it happen, and it happened so fast we couldn’t react in time. He fought so well, he was so brave” he replied, rubbing her back soothingly.

When she finally calmed down and no more tears would come, she pulled away from his chest and wound her arms around his neck, kissing his lips before he could say anything. He eventually pushed her away with gentle hands and said, “Midge not like this, I can’t kiss you while you’re upset…it’ll be like taking advantage of you”. She frowned and pulled away, standing up to go to the door, “I came to you for comfort because I like you Russell, it’s not taking advantage of me if I kiss you first” she snapped when he took hold of her arm to stop her. He shrugged and gave her a shy grin, “I thought it would be…sometimes people do something they regret when they’re upset”.

“Don’t worry about that, I’m not going to regret anything I do with you” she said softly, her cheeks going a little red. He raised his eyebrows but didn’t say anything, he just nodded and pulled her back towards the bed so she could take comfort in his arms they way she had intended before she even knocked on his door.

‘Hands caressed his naked body, lips traced soft patterns across his neck, teeth nibbled his skin. He moaned and arched his back, pressing closer to the body pinning him down, bare skin brushing against his own. He growled as the teeth sank into his shoulder and he felt a hard dick slide inside of him, pushing in so deep he nearly screamed with pleasure. They moved together, holding on to one another tightly. “Elliot…” he moaned and gripped him so hard that little beads of blood appeared on Elliot’s back.’

“Yes Calom?” he was answered, and he gasped, eyes shooting open to find Elliot walking over to his bed, a smirk spreading across his face even as he struggled not to show it. Calom scowled and rolled over, “I didn’t say anything” he mumbled, hoping Elliot wouldn’t question him about it. For once Elliot left him alone, sitting on his bed to put on his boots, shoulders shaking with silent laughter even though the moan had made him have more of a reaction than just amusement.

“Maybe we should stay here for a while longer, I don’t think Miriam should be travelling again, she’s feels like the birth is nearing” Jeremy said to the others as they gathered in the little empty park the next night. He was sitting on  the bench next to his mate as Russell leaned against the pole of the swing set and Midge lingered near to him. Calom was sitting on the low fence lining the park, next to the bench, and Elliot was standing next to him as close as he dared, though the teen seemed too preoccupied to notice.

“Well, it’s not exactly a great place to give birth is it? We need a forest or woods to do it, we can’t go to a hospital in case they run tests on her or the baby and notice how ‘abnormal’ we are” Calom muttered, keeping his eyes on Miriam’s bulging tummy rather than looking at his brother. The others nodded in agreement, even Midge, and then Elliot added, “We can’t do it in a hotel either really, if we don’t want any attention, and Miriam wanted to give birth in the woods”.  Jeremy sighed and glanced at his mate, who nodded and squeezed his hand.

“I guess we can move on, but what if you go into labour during the day? We can’t go into the woods then can we? We will have to just deal with the attention of humans in the hotel, and until then you will all help to find a house to rent so hopefully we won’t have to be in a hotel at the time” Jeremy concluded, and stood up, helping Miriam to her feet. They all exchanged glances at the mention of renting a house. It was Elliot who cleared his throat and asked, “What if there are more hunters trying to track us down, not to mention the police from that town after we just up and disappeared from the hotel leaving bullet holes everywhere? We’ll be vulnerable staying in one spot”. Jeremy sighed and looking up at the waning moon, deep in thought for a moment, before replying “We’ll deal with it, stay extra alert and move on when we can”.

They all nodded and followed their Alpha back, Elliot and Calom splitting off to go to their car and drive back to their hotel. Both of them were thinking the same thing about the house, that it was dangerous. Not only would they be stuck in one place to make it easier for any hunters to come across them, but they would have human neighbours who would eventually notice their strange nocturnal habits of disappearing almost every night. Most people would assume they were hardcore party-goers or bar crawlers, but there was always someone who would notice there was more to it, who would be more suspicious than the rest. “You worried about this too?” he asked Calom, who was slumped in the seat beside him, head resting against the window. “Yeah…”

It fell silent again, and Elliot glanced over to see the teen was asleep, or pretending to be, he couldn’t make up his mind which. When they reached the hotel he reached over and gently shook him awake, watching as Calom’s eyes opened sleepily and he looked slightly confused for a moment. Elliot turned and got out the car to hide his grin and locked it when Calom had stumbled out, blinking under the glare of the streetlight.

They went upstairs and Elliot couldn’t resist opening the door for Calom and gesturing for him to go in, for which he received a sleepy glare, and then he locked up while Calom stripped off his clothes and sank onto the bed, curling up beneath the covers murmuring a soft goodnight. Elliot said goodnight and climbed into his own bed, wishing he could crawl next to Calom and hold him close, press up against his warm soft body. He sighed as he got a semi-hard on, and buried his face in the pillow, thinking back to how Calom had moaned out his name in his sleep, sounding so turned-on and breathless that he had been tempted to pin him down and take him right there and then. But he had wanted to live to see another day so he had decided against the idea.
