Part 6
Over the next few weeks, the Wilsons and the Wakefields see a lot of each other. Frankie and Philip have sleepovers at each other's homes. Don brings his son over for supper a few times and once has the Wilsons to the parsonage for a meal, with pie for dessert. Frank and Ginny take the boys to church every Sunday, and after a month officially become new members. Mark announces he wants to go to Sunday School. Incredulous that their middle son would want to spend another at at school, Frank and Ginny ask him why. "I want to learn about Jesus. Rev told me the Bible says Jesus loves kids more than Grandpa." So, Frank starts driving Mark to the church an hour early each Sunday.
Mark is not the only one curious about divine love. One evening, when Don and Philip are over for supper, after the boys have excused themselves from the table to go to the playroom for their usual romp, and Ginny began clearing the dishes, Frank and Don begin talking.
"Reverend, don't you ever feel guilty doing things your church doesn't approve of?"
"You mean fucking Philip? You're right, the church would lynch me for sure if they knew about it. I need to be extremely discrete. But in my heart I don't really feel guilt. I think the Good Lord actually approves of the way I show my love to Philip.
"The church has had this conflict for two thousand years; all denominations. Over and over they have condemned pedophilia as a sin. Yet ordained men of God have always had young children, especially boys, in their beds. That goes for humble priests and monks, all the way up to bishops and more than a couple popes. In the early church, there was a saying, 'With wine and boys around, the monks have no need of the Devil to tempt them.' It wasn't only the clergy, of course. Both in Italy during the Renaissance, and in Russia under the Tsars, Man/boy love was common and accepted. The same in Spain under the Moors. And in Albania, older teenage boys took younger teenage boys as lovers. Even after they married in their mid 20s, they often kept their boy lovers."
"And if we go outside the Christian tradition, we often find an even more tolerant view of Man/boy love."
"Well, I heard about the ancient Greeks."
"Yes, in Athens it was considered a man's responsibility to take a young boy and teach him the lessons of life, including sex. And of course the Greek gods themselves were often boy lovers.
"The same goes for many other cultures around the world, even today. In Asia, there's a saying, "Women for breeding, boys for pleasure, but melons for sheer delight."
"That's really funny, Rev."
"The art and poetry of Persia celebrated boy love. There were legal brothels called 'houses of the beardless', that offered young males. In China, young boy prostitutes were paid more than the women whores, right up to the Communist revolution. And in Japan, the Samurais practiced shudo, "the Way of the Young." In one branch of Buddhism, founded by a man who came from China with his young lover, the monks who followed him had love affairs with beautiful boys. In Korea in the late 1800s, pedophilia went on in public and no one batted an eye.
"A lot of pedophiles from Europe go to Sri Lanka to find boys for sex. The kids are poor, and this form of tourism is an important part of the economy. So instead of cracking down on the trade, they recently set up schools to train boys as young as Mark in how to entertain the foreigners, and do it safely."
"Ha, now that's a school Mark would excel in!"
Pastor smiles. "You're right. He'd be top of the class." He went on with his global survey. "I've read in Native American tribes up and down the west coast, it's considered a great honor for a man to have a boy lover. A mother grooms her beautiful son, raises him and dresses him as a girl, trains him to act like a lady. Then when he's about ten, he marries a wealthy chief." Frank thought about little Julie in the network. "So you see, Frank, it's our western tradition that has these puritanical censures against pedophiles."
"But, what about the Bible? After all, that's what you believe in, right? Isn't there a commandment Thou shalt not fuck a kid, or something like that?"
"Believe me, I've looked. And I haven't found it yet, Frank. In fact, we're told to love the little ones among us, to protect the helpless, to raise them up to be people who love the Lord and love their fellow man. Do you remember the promises you made when your boys were baptized?"
"Uhm, well, er, to be honest, Don, we didn't baptize them. Ginny and me, our parents had us baptized, but when our kids were born, we weren't really religious and we didn't see the point. I'm sorry."
"No, don't be sorry. You were being true to your beliefs. Too many parents bring their kids in for baptism for the wrong reasons. Just because it's the thing to do; or their families expect it; or it's an excuse for a party; or they think that's all it takes for the kid to be saved. But now when your boys do want to be baptized, it's not too late, you know."
"Hehe, OK, I'll talk to them about it."
"But getting back to the Bible, do you remember, a few weeks ago the Sunday Gospel lesson was Luke chapter 7?"
"Uhm, Im sorry Rev. My Bible knowledge is still pretty rusty."
"It was the story about a Roman soldier who came to Jesus and pleaded with him to heal his slave."
"Oh, yeah, I remember it now."
"Well, when I was preparing for that Sunday, I learned something interesting that I didn't mention in my sermon. Luke says the soldier had a 'dear' slave. In the Greek, it could also mean a 'beloved' slave. One Bible professor at the Chicago Theological Seminary thinks the man and the young boy were lovers, and Jesus accepted their relationship."
"Wow! Why didn't you put that in your sermon, Don?"
"Are you going to be there when they kick me out on my ass, Frank?" The two men laugh.
