Wednesday
When Ellie woke up Mel had been long gone, instead taking her place in the chair was her mom. She was sitting patiently her hands folded neatly in front of her lap. Ellie cringed at the thought of her mom just staring at her sleep for hours, seemed a bit weird. Understandable but weird. Once again she spent that day with Maggie and the whole day she was taken in and out of the room for more test and x-rays and the works just to be on the safe side they said. According to her doctor she was out of main danger, she just needed to be observed for a couple of more days. Those said days felt like an eternity. Like usual when ever she’s out of her room she is reminded constantly on how lucky she is. To have just rupture her spleen and broken her arm. The amnesia really wasn’t mention and she was glad for that, she didn’t want any pity on how it was just a temporary phase, she had heard the doctor there was a high probability some memories were just gone for good.
This time around Maggie just made small talk about her plans on who to tell about Ellie’s accident, apparently Ellie had a huge family, and the last things she wanted was to see a ton of new or well questionable faces. Maggie sense the discomfort and change the topic to how Lucas worked for a construction company and how she was still waiting for him to meet a nice girl and have kids.
‘Kids,’ Ellie uttered, Maggie nodded. “Yeah I want grandchildren.” She felt awkward as Ellie nodded again closing her eyes and hearing a very familiar conversation a long time ago.
“I don’t want kids, I told you from the start when we got together I don’t want kids,”
'One of the many argument we had,' Ellie thought as she realized she and Mel didn’t have the smoothest relationship. She felt a sudden pang of guilt she didn’t really know why but it was there. This feeling of guilt and remorse like if she could take what ever she had done bad she would try and take it back. She pondered why she would feel like that, it was the worst nagging feeling, and she was annoyed by it. She shook her head and waited again.
Again at midnight Ellie woke up and just as before Mel was sitting on the chair leaned back and sleeping. Ellie smiled as she saw Mel’s legs twitch a little. Ellie scooted closer and stretched her hand out as she tap Mel on her knee. Mel opened her eyes as she groaned and felt the discomfort on her back. She sat up straight as she reached for the hand that was on her knee.
“Hey,” Mel greeted as she felt Ellie entwined her fingers with her. Mel smiled even though they were covered mostly by darkness, Mel could tell Ellie was blushing. “I heard you got more x-rays done and an MRI,” Mel started to small talk as she rubbed her thumb along side of Ellie's index finger.
“Yeah my mom was here again, I haven’t seen my dad or Lucas in a while now.” Ellie commented as she sighed. She wondered were they had gone. “yeah Lucas is real busy, he has to make up for the missed days since he left with out notice or warning.” Mel explained as she took a deep breath and recline back still holding onto Ellie's hand. “your dad well I'm guessing Maggie has him doing something. I don't know what other pressing matter could prevent him from being here, I mean the man is retired he has all the time.” Mel took a deep breath and slowly exhale as she blinked slowly, she was exhausted. Her eye lids felt heavy.
“I don’t think you’ll be discharged on Friday as expected it’s too soon, since you had surgery your still on an aggressive dose of antibiotic,” Mel started to comment on the status of Ellie stay in the hospital. She felt Ellie tensed up, she might of guessed that Ellie was already fed up with the hospital treatment.
“I want to go home, to my big bed with the blue sheets and the-,” Ellie stopped as she saw Mel smiled sadly as she looked away. From the little light that illuminated the room Ellie could of sworn Mel had gotten teary eye.
“Yeah,” Ellie mumbled as she withdrew her hand away, and accommodated herself again.
“I’ll see if you can get discharged sooner okay, and I’ll start accommodating things for when you get out.” Mel lowered her voice as she swallowed hard. ‘Our bed sheets are light green,’ Mel thought as she pieced more pieces and was finally accepting the fact that Ellie-
“hey,” Mel glanced at Ellie as she was snapped back to reality.
“My mother keeps hinting I’m going home with her,” Ellie left the question hang out as she heard Mel scoffed. “Well ultimately it depends on you.” Mel answered as she wasn’t going to do a tug of war on Ellie, let Ellie decided and this problem would be over with.
“I want to go home, my home, our home whatever home is for me now at age of thirty,” Mel smiled, “okay then,” she replied as she stared out the window. “I’ll be back Friday evening okay and hopefully maybe you’ll be discharged.”
“yeah since I’m lucky and all,” Ellie retorted sarcastically and then flinched as she realized how harsh the words sounded.
“we’ll when everyone keeps insisting on it, it tends to get annoying. All the nurses kept telling me ‘she’s very lucky’ and blah blah blah…” Mel commented knowing why Ellie felt irritated.
Ellie smiled internally she was glad she had someone to talk to.
“So what the thing your gonna give me to help me out,” Ellie asked breaking the silence that threaten to overwhelm them.
“It just some books of yours, don't worry about it you'll see.”
Friday
Mel had avoided the hospital completely she knew Maggie was looking for her desperately, the news about Mel hiring a CNA and a physical therapist.Which was all sign that Mel intended Ellie was going home with her, which of course was Maggie's nightmare. Be that as it may, Mel didn't want to face Maggie just yet. It was an argument she wanted to postpone, indefinitely if possible but that was asking too much. Mel sat at home in the middle of the living room, watching the home she and Ellie had created. The curtains were down so the room was semi dark as the sun was being denied access in. She stood up as she made her way down the hallway, it was dark but she knew the path she knew which door led to where and she went to the last door down the hallway the biggest room. Their room. She stood in the doorway and lazily turned on the light she stared at the bed. Specifically the light green sheets that adorned the king size bed. The bed was still made since the last time they slept in it. Something was off that morning when they woke up. For one Ellie had woken up first. Secondly Ellie had made the bed that morning too. In the eight years of being together Mel woke up first and made the bed.
Mel turned off the light and walked across the hallway and made it into her room/office. The box she gotten from the junkyard still sat on her twin size bed. She glanced at it and wondered if she should rummaged through it. The only thing she had taken out of the box was the ring that sat on top of the piles of papers and pocket notebooks. It was their wedding ring. Mel patted her pant leg she carried it, waiting for when Ellie would realized it was missing.
She took it off, Mel pondered as she sat on her chair and spun around as she closed her eyes and leaned back.
“she took the ring off,” Mel said out loud hearing it only made her confirmation.
“you were leaving me, that why you were driving west. Ah Ellie,” Mel sighed as she felt the familiar trembled on her chest as she glanced at the clock.
Mel shook her head and chuckled as she found her resilience and stood up. She walked down the hallway to Ellie's office. She found the place half empty. Mel only nodded, she had avoided the room it was Ellie's private space she never felt the need to peer into it until now. The computer was the only thing on the desk. The shelves were empty. The drawer had a couple of papers in it other wise. It was deserted. Mel was confused and had questions but she quelled them down. “not now,” she told herself.
A realization hit Mel as she walked out of the room into her office and flipped the box over.
There at the top of the pile were 22 still intact diaries. Not even singed. She opened just the first page to see the date as she organized them in order. The latest one was missing. Mel had no interest in reading them, she knew Ellie had diaries but this was the final piece Ellie would never leave these pieces of memories behind. The fact she had them in the car meant Ellie was serious about leaving.
That night Mel once again sneaked into the room, and she sat on the same chair, she leaned back and stared at the sleeping form. Ellie seemed more comfortable sleeping on the bad arm meaning it was healing faster than usual which course meant that the hairline fracture the doctors told her about was really less than a hairline fracture. Luckily Mel had good insurance that why she wasn't minding so much all the extra test they kept making.
At midnight Ellie stirred as expected this time Mel hadn't fallen asleep she waited, as she heard Ellie stirred and move. Mel had a cup of water ready and as usual she helped Ellie, but this time she didn't extend her hand out to her and she didn't say her usual greeting. Ellie felt something off but ignored it as she tried to see Mel's face but the limited light made it hard.
“Dad and Lucas came over today,” Ellie broke the silence, she heard Mel grunt in acknowledgment. “yeah, you were right Lucas had work to catch up in and My dad was making notification calls about my accident, you were right my mother had him on that task.”
“ah,” Mel said as she moved her neck side to side feeling it pop.
“are you okay?” Ellie asked finally getting tired of the cold treatment.
“yeah just tired and shit,” Mel sat up straight as she grabbed the diary from inside her jacket.
“here,” Mel handed the book to her, “You can start catching up tomorrow, I think you have from College and on at home, I don't know where the books before that are I'm guessing they're in your parent's attic.”
Ellie took it and ran her hand over the cover, her diaries, that was right she started writing in them since sixth grade.
“Look I spoke to the doctor you won't be release until maybe next Wednesday and not Monday as planned. Seems like your white count cell is still a bit too high, meaning the infection is still a problem.”
“gah, just great” Ellie responded not liking the idea of still being in the hospital but she didn't mind now that she had something to pass the time.
“Ok, look I'm gonna go home and I'll see you Monday I have some work to catch up OK?” Mel stood up as she felt Ellie about to protest but Ellie bit her lip and just nodded in the dark. “OK,” she breathed out as she extended her hand out. Mel felt it and took it, “Ah Ellie,” she sighed as she kissed the top of the hand and gently let go.
