Chapter 5
Corin locked his door and went straight to the videcom. He switched it on, adjusted the reception and watched as a face appeared. It was a blond curly haired American of the physical age of about seventeen but the age of three hundred and eleven. This was Richard Jared Simpson, leader of the Idars, founder of the PADD (Protection And Defense Department, the group responsible for the exile of the alien invader Zimmer) Sky’s chosen successor and most powerful Idar to exist-his power surpassed Sky’s. “Lionheart, what do you want with me?”
“Little Eagle informed me of your situation. I am just sorry I did not return earlier. Why was I not informed of this?”
“I WOULD have but for three reasons. One; you were off dimensional traveling, two; not many others know and three; this is MY problem, they are MY family and MY students. I must handle this myself in my OWN way.”
“Then why are Pamilla, Terrance, Carmen and your father there?”
Corin winced visibly “hey that was not MY idea. Eagle sent them around and I told him I could handle it but he sent them anyway. I’m not looking a gift-Idar in the mouth. Go complain to him about it.” He knew he wouldn’t, Richard never questioned Eagle’s decisions despite the fact that HE was the leader and often ‘gave’ to the others vast experience.
“You know I do not question Eagle’s decisions, my friend and do not get cocky. You may be five years my senior but while you live with either the Idars or the PADD I am your ruler and you obey me, remember that, hybrid.”
“Power gone to your head, Great One” Corin said, using the title many Idars called him sarcastically. “That’s the first time you’ve called me that to my face. Yes I am a hybrid but at least I’m no self-announced ruler who demands butt-licking at a regular bases!”
“Corin!” It was Jason who exclaimed this. He was perched on the open window-sill, wings outstretched and keeping his balance while clawed hands and feet gripped the wood tightly. “Father!” Corin exclaimed in surprise, then softly “you heard that? What are you doing here?” Jason entered the room, wings drooping on either side of him, face stern as he spoke “I came to see if you’re coming to get some calla and hear THIS. Apologize Corin, Richard is your friend.”
“And your maker!” Corin snapped, regretting it. But it hadn’t fazed Jason in the least. “Yes my maker but if anything YOU brought me into the Idars. YOU are the one I think of as my maker. I MADE you my son, I gave you LIFE and YOU gave it back to me, eternal life and near immortality, something no Child Of Hauleric has ever had before. Sure we could not age and die that way, sure our spells protect us from some causes of death but in the end we were nothing more than another human race.
You and I together are a new and better race, at least the start of that race. Together we can really become something, really make something special.” Corin looked at his father in shocked horror and surprise. Was this HIS father? The same one who had many times patiently reminded him that they were also Sons of Hauleric, not just half-Idars. “Are you serious father? You really think that!”
Jason smiled “not really. But don’t you see, we are the only two Fire Idars in existence. We need our family and friends, you especially. Where would you be now without them?” Corin nodded “I see your point.” He turned back to the videcom. “I’m sorry, Richard, I didn’t mean that. It was my ego talking again, not me.”
“I am sorry too, Corin. I let my anger at myself turn on you. I am just mad at myself for being off with May while you were in danger. However I will do as you asked and let you handle this. Just promise me as my friend that you will not hesitate to call me if you need me. Alright?”
“I will, I promise.”
“Good. Then I will leave you. Signing out.” The screen went blank.
Jason smiled at Corin “that is a rarity. He let you handle this yourself.” As Jason climbed back onto the window sill he continued “I hope you make him proud and prove to everyone what I’ve always known about you, that you too are a born leader. Meanwhile are you coming?”
Corin, who had been thinking deeply suddenly looked up “yes, coming.” He unbolted the door and followed his father onto the sill after removing his top and freeing his wings. “How is it?” Jason asked softly, looking at the wing. Corin raised it up and down as he said softly “healed. I’ll be fine.”
“Are you sure?”
“Positive now let’s go.” Jason launched himself into the air, huge leather-like wings flapping and carrying him into the sky towards the treetops. Corin copied and soon was side-by-side.

“Corin? Hello, are you there? Corin? Eagle’s finished.” Amanda slowly entered the room, looking around the dark room for the hybrid. But there was no one in sight.
The window was open and as she went over to close it she saw two shapes with large wings just disappearing into the tree tops. Instead she left it open and went over to the altar to check the bowls of protective powders-used to ward off evil spirits. The salt was there, full and ready but the garlic one was empty. The blue water called Tommo that the Fire race used in spells to view things they wouldn’t normally be able to see sat in the middle of the altar.
For long seconds she stared at the bowl, tempted greatly to use it to check up on the hybrid. But again she couldn’t. This time she was NOT going to stuff up their relationship. Instead she took the empty bowl downstairs to refill with garlic pieces.
Later she was awoken by a strangled scream from the room next door, Corin’s. She and Hank grabbed their robes and ran towards it, pulling it on as they did. They threw the door open and burst in to find Corin in a corner, as far from the altar as possible, wings curved around him protectively, one hiding from his nose down, eyes wide. As soon as they entered he pointed at the altar “get rid of it! NOW!”
“Wha…” they started to question when he cried “The garlic! Idars are deathly allergic to it! Even the smell of it! Get rid of it!” While Hank grabbed the bowl and ran it downstairs to the bin Amanda went to Corin’s side. “I’m sorry, that’s my fault. I came looking for you earlier, found the empty bowl and decided to help you out by refilling it. I didn’t know. If I had of I wouldn’t have done it. Are you really deathly allergic to it? Aren’t Idars immortal?”
“Who told you we were immortal?” Corin asked as he didn’t move from his spot or position. “Holly, remember? She said Idars are indestructible and immortal.” She said to him.
“No she said we are VIRTUALLY indestructible and NEARLY immortal. Only Richard is truly immortal. I told you that I’m half-fledged, still human. I...urh!” Corin suddenly doubled at the waist and as Amanda went to help him his wings came up and knocked her away.
Hank entered then, helped Amanda to her feet and as they both went to try and help him he managed “NO! Stay away! Stay away until I regain control!” They stayed at a distance, watching him in concern until he tried to get up, using the desk for support. They tried to move towards him again but he raised an hand and spoke without looking up, his long red hair hiding his face from them “No, stay back.”
He stumbled into his bathroom and closed the door behind him. They heard retracting noises, water running and moved to the door in time to hear two male voices. When they heard him moving towards the door they sat on the bed, waiting for him. Seconds later Corin walked out, still a little pale and shaking but otherwise fine and spoke before they could.
“I am sorry I knocked you down Mrs Amanda but you see fulls are immune to the garlic affects more than halves are and since I’m half more Idar than human or Child Of Hauleric. It affected me so badly because it was a surprise and I haven’t encountered it for at least two hundred and more years, since I first met Holly and Speed to be exact. I accept your apology, my adopted grandmother and say do not blame yourself for that, you did not know, I should have told you.”
“Are you all right now?”
“Yes now. Do me a favor, next time you have garlic around, warn me.” Amanda laughed in relief and said “okay. We’re going back to bed now if you are all right. Oh, fair warning, Hank’s taking the children to the zoo tomorrow so I can give the house a thorough clean. If you’re staying…”
“I’ll go with Hank and the children,” Corin said quickly “ I have to show them I can also relax. To them I’m too serious. Goodnight.” The couple nodded, left him and went to bed.
