Part 1, chapter 5

HERE
“Jesus Christ, Bill! What the hell happened?!”
Bill rubbed his forehead. He looked beyond tired, his eyes red, face almost slack. His lips were trembling.
“Jack, I don’t know,” he said quietly. “I was driving and there was nobody around… And then all of a sudden they just pop up in front of my truck… Jesus, Jack… I didn’t even have time to slam on my breaks… I tried to swerve, and I know that I honked but…” he closed his eyes. “They were right in front of my goddamned truck! God, Jack, I am so sorry…”
Jack closed his eyes and tried to stop himself from shaking. He knew that Bill wasn’t lying. He knew the guy for the past fifteen years.
“How is she?” Bill asked finally.
Jack shook his head.
“I don’t know,” he muttered. “They said she was alive and that other kid too but… I don’t know.”
“Jack…” Bill’s voce broke and he coughed. “Jack, I am…”
“It was an accident,” Jack said evenly. “Bill, it was an accident. Shit happens. I just hope she comes out of this alive, that’s all.”
“How long has it been?”
“Five hours,” Jack muttered, thinking that Bill should know. He was the one who got Kris and the other kid into the hospital. And he was the one who phoned Jack. “What the hell were they doing in the middle of the road?!”
Bill shook his head.
“I don’t know,” he whispered. “It looked like they we playing or something… I don’t know.”
“Jesus…”
Jack had a sudden desire for a cigarette but he pushed it away. Someone might come out with the news about Kris, he thought. He couldn’t risk being outside if they did. He walked towards the coffee machine, and was digging in his pockets for some change, when someone called his name.
“Mr. Spencer?”
He whirled around, dropping his quarters on the linoleum floor.
“How is she?” he breathed and the doctor sighed.
“Mr. Spencer… Jack… I hate to say that but…”
“Oh Jesus,” Jack muttered weakly. “Oh Jesus Christ, Gary… Oh my God, she is…”
“No,” Gary shook his head immediately. “She is alive, Jack…”
Jack leaned against the coffee machine, his heart beating wildly.
“And the Kennedy kid is alive too,” Gary continued. “But Jack… They both slipped into coma, I am sorry…”
