Silence

Ty played with his phone. Flipped it open, stared at the screen for a second, closed it.
A/N: Here we go. A second chapter today. I'm slightly above my goal for today as well. ^.^ Go me. This chapter feels slightly awkward as, for some reason, I found it slightly difficult to juggle three people even though I usually have no trouble with more than that. Oh well. I'll post another chapter tomorrow, I do believe.

Thanks to Lisa for reviewing and anyone who read this. And Sleepy, leave me a review next time.

Lisa: That question will get answered... soonish? Don't worry.
He hasn't been working for them since he was little, he just came under their control back then. And his mother didn't really give him away she was declared an unfit parent because she was drinking and couldn't keep a job.

Open. Close. He should buy a new one when his contract ran out. Maybe get a really fancy one that he could put all kinds of games on. Then he wouldn’t have to carry his man bag to keep video games in if he wanted to carry them and his phone at the same time. Although, he did still have books he had to carry. And a notebook for writing stuff down. Sigh. Apparently he wasn’t getting rid of the bag anytime soon. Unfortunately.

Open. Close. He’d gotten a call from Cheryl’s secretary saying Ms. Whisler didn’t want him to be busy today. Didn’t want him to be busy today. But not that he had a job or that a courier would bring papers for him to study. Not that he had another physical to check up on his well-being since his numbers had been off last time. And not that she wanted to see him. Just- don’t be busy. Which left him trying to puzzle out what that meant.

He had considered calling her a dozen times and discarded the notion each time. Despite playing up his importance to the secretary it didn’t mean he had the right to interrupt the woman who was in charge of the health of the whole company just because he wanted to. He had the right to demand to see some of them without a appointment made weeks in advance but he still had to do so at their convenience. And calling her might not be convenient. Thus he had to wait. And wonder.

His phone finally went off and he answered it before the first ring had finished. “Hello?” He said in a voice that didn’t betray his obsession or nervousness beyond the fact that he’d answered so swiftly. “Hello, Tyrin.” Cheryl greeted. Ty flinched a bit and was glad they weren’t face to face so she could see it. “How are you?” She asked. “Fine.” Fine. He always said he was fine. Or well enough. “And you?” He wanted to get the small talk over with and find out what she wanted. “Hungry. I ended up being too busy for breakfast. Will you come out to lunch?” That’s what she wanted. Relief washed through him and he smiled though she couldn’t see that expression any more than the last. “Where at?” He asked.

“I was thinking of eating at that place we went a while back the one that does breakfast all day. How does that sound?” He tried to think of where she was thinking of and finally had it figured out. “Sounds good.” He said. “I can be there in half an hour if I take my car.” He added. “If that’s okay?” He asked. She paused and seemed to be consulting something. “Make it an hour and I’ll see you then.” He nodded and then remembered to verbalize. “Okay.” He agreed. “Good bye.” “Bye.”

He closed the phone and stood up. He gathered his bag. Book. Notebook. Video game. Phone. Put his wallet and keys in his pockets. And he still didn’t have to be there for nearly an hour. He paced nervously for about five minutes before forcing himself to sit down and read. Which he managed for a while anyway before he decided it wouldn’t really matter if he was early. He could be nervous and impatient in public just as well as he could do it at home.

Decided, Ty picked up his bag and made his way down to the parking level to get his car. He ended up in traffic and everything sort of evened out. Still, he wouldn’t have wanted to be late. He found a spot to park and walked into the diner and found Cheryl immediately without looking around. He started to smile and wave to her but the greeting died in his throat when he noticed she was already sitting with someone. They were sitting back-to him so all he could really see was that they had spiky blue hair, bad posture, a light tan or maybe just slightly dark skin and he was fairly certain the person was male. He resisted the urge to read his thoughts.

Cheryl shot him, or maybe the person sitting across from her, a kind of look that Ty could only interpret as “play nice.” He resisted the urge to frown at her as he approached their table. “Hello, Ty.” She greeted him. “Ty, meet Aiden. Aiden, Tyrin.” She introduced them. “Hello.” Ty responded as he studied the other male. Aiden appeared to be younger than he himself was but it was difficult to say. He had grey eyes and an amused expression on his face that seemed to be more of a default look than actual response to the situation. “‘Lo.” Aiden held out his hand casually. Tyrin looked at his hand for a moment, raised an eyebrow at Cheryl and moved around her to sit in the chair next to her after hanging his bag on the back of the chair.

“Way to snub me, jerkoff.” Aiden muttered. “This is not a pissing contest.” Cheryl remarked dryly. “There’s no need to pout because I didn’t ask you out to lunch just to have lunch.” She said, this comment directed at Ty. “And you don’t need to resort to rudeness for a perceived slight, although I have to say that Ty could have at least explained that he doesn’t shake hands. Now, do try to act like normal people for a couple minutes and figure out what you want to eat.”

“Will do, mother.” Aiden drawled sarcastically but picked up his menu and hid behind it. Ty considered his own menu which was lying on the table. “You eat an absurd amount of food for how skinny you are.” The blue-haired boy remarked apparently at random. Ty’s eyes widened as he looked at Aiden. He hadn’t felt him trying to read his mind at all. How had he done that? That was unnerving.

“I have a high metabolism the same as you do. Perhaps more so but for the same reasons. And I would appreciate if you would stay out of my mine.” Ty responded, trying to be polite and not “pout” as Cheryl had so eloquently put it. Aiden seemed to perk up at that comment. “Huh. I couldn’t read your mind if I wanted to. Is that your special gift?” The blond frowned slightly. “Yes, I can. How did you know what I was going to order if you didn’t read my mind?”

The corner of Aiden’s mouth turned down. “I saw it.” He responded vaguely. “I can see the future.” He clarified in a mock-spooky voice as he waggled his fingers. Ty wondered if he was being serious for several long moments. But it seemed like if he was spouting crap just for the hell of it Cheryl would call him on it. Ty nodded finally as he mused over this thought. Seeing the future. What must that be like? You’d think it would be more distracting than mind reading but maybe he could turn it off? Wouldn’t that be nice.

When the waitress came Ty ordered coffee and juice an a large amount of breakfast foods with the excuse that he hadn’t eaten breakfast. The waitress seemed to buy it but he knew Cheryl didn’t which was more or less a good thing. Cheryl ordered a tuna salad but Aiden also ordered breakfast and coffee. “Tunatarian?” Ty asked quizzically when the waitress had walked away. Cheryl sighed. “I wish you wouldn’t do that. But the technical term is pesca-vegatarian. Except- it mostly ends up being tuna.” She shrugged one shoulder.

The rest of lunch was spent in silence as Cheryl calmly ate her salad and both boys wolfed down their food. Ty wasn’t surprised to find that Aiden ate just as much as he himself did. He was surprised when Cheryl dug in her bag and pulled out a manila folder. She set it on the table in front of Ty and left enough cash to pay the tab and tip. “Sorry Ty, I have to go. You have a physical in a week so be good and I wont have to scold you again.” She touched his shoulder and hurried away, already late for an appointment she was supposed to attend.

“Well, hurry up and open it I want to find out what gives you that horrified expression on your face.” Aiden prompted. Ty set his hand on top of the folder and studied Aiden again for a moment. He was dressed the way that he himself usually dressed except a bit more sloppily and self-defensive about it as though he was deliberately trying to look casual and generic. “Why don’t you tell me?” He challenged and looked him in the eye. Aiden looked away and muttered something nearly inaudible. “What was that?” Ty said a little more loudly than necessary. “It doesn’t work that way.” Aiden mumbled again, only a little louder.

Satisfied with that response Ty opened the folder and began to scan the top page. True to Aiden’s vision Ty did start to get a horrified expression on his face. “What is it?” Aiden asked. “My... assignment.” Ty responded vaguely. He set down the page and rubbed at his temples. Even after being sent to assassinate people, sent to torture people and seduce others he still found it hard to comprehend that he’d gained an assignment so deplorable. And it wasn’t that he had to kill someone. He didn’t. He had to babysit. And not just anyone. He had to babysit Aiden.

“I’m supposed to “look after” you.” He responded, puzzled. “Oh.” Aiden said boredly. “I knew that already.” He commented, examining his nails for a moment. “Ms. Whisler or Cheryl or whatever you call her. She told me earlier. I guess she must have thought you’d be pissed as all hell or she would have told you herself.” He shrugged. “Can we leave now?” He asked but didn’t wait for the answer before he stood up. “You have a really nice car, by the way.” The blue-haired male added as he turned and started to walk away.

Ty sighed loudly and got up to follow him. He put the folder in his bag, he still had to read the rest of the papers after all, and then he followed the younger man outside to his car. Ty frowned as they started driving back toward his apartment. It was annoyingly quiet. Really, really quiet. Ty glanced over at Aiden and then tried to read his mind for a moment. It was like trying to read the mind of a rock. He couldn’t do it.

Maybe there was one good thing about Aiden, then. He was quiet. Blessedly quiet. “Don’t you listen to music?” Aiden demanded and started pressing buttons on the radio and fiddling with the dials until he’d tuned in a disjointed techno song. Ty sighed inwardly. Well, at least his mind was quiet. If he could get him to shut his mouth for a couple seconds at a time he might learn to appreciate the silence.
