Not all that ugly

The yard was still slippery from mud. Basia didn't notice the glances the boys exchanged when she walked past them, and the tripping managed to surprise her. There was a faint splash and roaring laughter. Someone muttered "witch" barely audibly. She supported herself with her hands and got up, chin held high but eyes fixed in the Tower door.

"You do know that you are supposed to lift your skirt and wipe before you come from the corner room. And then let your hem fall, but that's optional here." Peter blurted out when Basia came from the kitchen, stack of soft paper in her hand, drying her muddy backside with it. She couldn't help it, the corners her lips twitched a little. Peter was one of the worst bullies but his sense of humor was impeccable and he delivered his lines in a dry manner. She usually found snappy comebacks only after the moment was gone. Silas had once asked her in the dining hall if she was bullied and she had shaken her head. Peter had been sitting in the next table and without a fear of punishment, he retorted "I've been doing my best but she seems to be too daft to notice."

Despite his lack of manners he was rarely in trouble. Nikolaus didn't appreciate arrogance, but Peter seemed to find the perfect timing for his behavior. He caught people of guard and succeeded to humiliate them and amuse them at the same time. He also had a knack in making sharp observations of the people and events around him, sometimes giving constructive criticism disguised in mockery.

Peter didn't mind there was no way of returning to what was, but he wasn't sure if the events would work on his advantage. Would he really get the position he was promised? If he would, the price was worth it. The price someone else had to pay. He watched Basia walk away with that slight swaying of hips which irritated him and yet he couldn't get his eyes of her. She wasn't all that ugly if you didn't pay attention to her face.

"I'm not taking that post." Basia faced the window. Nikolaus shifted his weight from one foot to another. There was always something wrong in his suggestions. This time Basia claimed to have heard his prospect employer is a criminal, and working for him would mean the same as signing up to a brothel. Nikolaus didn't know the man well, but of course he had found out about him from his previous household staff, and there was nothing bad to say about his behavior towards young ladies. "Well then, since nothing I have suggested lately has pleased you, perhaps you should start doing something about your future by yourself." Basia spun to look him in the eye and responded softly, "Like you did about yours?"
