Interlude: Three years ago with Crei
We appologize for the slow updates. Damn RL and college professors. The next chapter is well on its way to being posted. It will also be seasoned with a little lemon juice. We know the overall pace of the story has been a little slow, but within the next three to four chapters it will start to pick up. A plot will soon rear its ugly head.
In the meantime, here's a very small piece occuring outsite the main storyline. Enjoy!!
“So, kid, I heard you had a birthday”
Inusuke looked up from the deck of cards he was currently trying to stack. Crei was standing in front of him, dressed in his typical outlandish clothes; only his customary smirk was cockier than usual. The newly turned 16 year old blinked up at his mentor.
“Yeah, how did you know?” He held up a hand before Crei could launch into another spiel of about how wonderful his information network is. “Never mind, I already know”.
Inusuke appeared to be struggling with the urge to punch the smug look occupying the bastard’s handsome face. Crei shoved his hands in his pockets and turned so he was watching the boy from the peripheral of his good eye. “Must be hard to have a birthday that’s so close to the prince’s”.
There was a barely perceptible stiffening of the shoulders that would have been much more pronounced three years ago, before all of the lessons from the con artist. Crei was minorly impressed. The kid was getting good, but he didn’t put up the charade for long.
Inusuke let his shoulders slump. “How long have you known?”
“You mean how long have I known that the well groomed street urchin who couldn’t pick a pocket worth a damn, who sneered at guards instead of running from them, the same guards who were searching for our young ‘missing’ prince?” He angled his head towards the discovered prince and raised a pierced eyebrow. He didn’t feel the need to say his suspicions had been confirmed when a concerned mother made a visit to the Scarlette Heretic and politely threatened castration should anything happen to her baby.
Inusuke started sulking “Damn it. I thought I had hidden my identity better than that.”
Crei laughed and slapped his protégé on the shoulder. “A few more years with me, kid, and you’ll be able to.”
Again, reviews and concrit are most welcome. (Encouragements also light fires under our asses and get us moving faster.)
