Blunderstruck

Angie

“Mommy! Angie slept over!” My eyes flutter as I realize that Cody’s little sister, Bev, is standing in the open doorway of his room.

“So?” I hear Sheila shout back from downstairs.

I can feel Cody beginning to stir under me. Shit! I try to cover us both as quickly as possible, but I know it’s too late.

“She’s in Cody’s room.” Bev shouts back down the stairs, her voice dripping with mischief.

“And?” Sheila is obviously annoyed at the little girl. She’s not the type who enjoys immature games of twenty questions.

I look at Bev imploringly and mouth “Please!” as I put my index finger to my lips in a ‘don’t say it!’ gesture.

She looks at me with a devilish glint in her eye and I see her mouth open. I brace myself.

“They’re naked!” She yells despite my efforts.

Just then Cody bolts up in bed and gruffly says, “Get out of here squirt!” As he launches a pillow at her small form.

“Bevey! Get down here right now!” Sheila orders in a curt voice.

Beverly bolts from the room and runs down the stairs yelling. “Cody hit me!”

I know that his indiscretion with the pillow is the least of our worries and not what we’re in huge trouble for. What are we going to say? How can we explain this? Are they going to tell my parents? I shudder a little as Cody gets up and begins to dress.

“Fuck!” I say to no one in particular as I desperately look for my clothes from yesterday.

Not finding them, I hastily pull on Cody’s oversized hockey jersey and rifle through his drawers for a pair of boxers that won’t fall off. I find a tight-ish pair of boxer briefs and pull them on to complete my ridiculous ensemble.
Cody looks at me with a crooked smile on his face. “Nice look for you Baby.” He jokes.

“How can you make fun at a time like this?” I’m incredulous. “We’re in a heap of shit! I don’t think I can even face your family now.”

He softly laughs as he pulls me into a deep comforting embrace. “Oh Ange! I’ll take care of them. You just stay in here until you feel ok or until I come back to get you.”

He kisses me softly on the mouth. I can’t help but respond as I put my arms around his neck. I can feel his sexy body tense as he tightens our embrace. I can’t believe we’ve waited this long, It feels so right for us to be like this.

“Ok.” I mumble, my face still scarlet.

With that he leaves the room and closes the door behind him. I sit on the bed with my knees pulled into my chest, waiting for the other shoe to drop. I feel so guilty for having done this in his house and allowing his little sister to walk in, but at the same time I can’t keep a smile from my lips. I can’t believe that Cody and I took this step. I’m overwhelmed with happiness. He loves me back. I get a warm fuzzy feeling as I replay yesterday and this morning in my mind.

I scrunch my eyes closed in an attempt to hear what’s going on downstairs. I can’t quite make out what Sheila is saying, but her voice is a low hiss. I can hear Cody trying to defend himself as best as possible, but I can’t quite hear the words.

“What’s going on in here?” It’s Cody’s Father, Jack. His voice has always carried.

“Do you know what your son did?” Sheila responds loudly to match his tone.

“Oh Cody, what did you do now? You know, you’ve gotta stop pissing your Mom off, I’m the one who has to deal with it later!” Jack just sounds tired.

I hear a smacking sound and realize that Sheila has hit Jack on the arm as is her habit when she’s fed up with him. “It’s not like the time he built an aunt farm in the basement dear. He had SEX! In his room! Bev walked in on them. This it totally inappropriate!” She’s flustered and she almost spit out the horrible word, Sex.

“Cody, Son! You can’t bring strange girls home with you. I know you’re at an age… well where things are going to happen, but really Son, a little respect.” Jack is trying his best to sound stern, but I can hear the glimmer of a smile in his voice.

“Dad will you at least listen to me? I can’t reason with her!” I know that Cody is referring to his fuming Mother. “It wasn’t a stranger. It was Angie. This has been coming for some time now and…” His voice is cracking with anticipation.
“Angie?” Jacks voice is a jumble of confusion. Here it comes, I’m going to be banned from their house and grounded until I’m forty. “Well why didn’t you say so slugger? Call the caterer! It’s about damn time!” His voice is suddenly light and happy.

“Jack!” Sheila is still livid.

“What Sheila? You expect the boy to be a priest? He’s nearly nineteen and she’s well… You’ve seen her.” Jack shoots back.

“I give up!” Sheila says and I hear her heavy footfalls coming up the stairs.

I have the sudden urge to jump out the second story window. My worst fear is realized as I see the knob begin to turn. I bury my head in my knees, hoping that she’ll just go away.

“Angie?” Her voice is surprisingly soft and caring.

She comes over to the bed; I feel the mattress give a little as she sits next to me. I’m still bracing myself for the worst when I feel her hand gently stroking my hair. “We need to talk darling.”

I look up at her and all I see is concern. She’s always been like a second Mother to me and this makes me feel even worse for the intrusion. My face is almost purple at this point with humiliation. “I’m sorry!” I blurt out as a few tears escape my eyes.

“Oh sweetie, are you alright?” She asks caringly. “Cody didn’t do anything to hurt you did he?”

What? Did I have VIRGIN stamped on my forehead until this moment? “No.” I say somewhat lamely. “He wouldn’t do that.”

“Good.” She says as she continues to stroke my hair. “Is there anything you want to ask me?” She prods gently.

“No, but please don’t tell my parents. I can’t handle that right now.” I plead with her.

“Angie, I don’t feel comfortable lying to them, but as long as they don’t ask, I won’t say a word. Please just make sure that you lock the door next time and that you’re both safe.”

Safe? Safe! I realize in this instant that Cody and I were anything but safe. I was so caught up in the moment that I forgot… “Ok.” I say quietly, hoping that my expression is convincing.

She gives me a hug and then leaves the room. I go into the bathroom to retrieve my now dry clothes and put them on. I quietly head downstairs in search of Cody. I’d really just like to go home.

Bev is sitting in the living room watching some horrible cartoon. She glares at me, and then wrinkles her face. “EWWWW!” She says out loud.

“You’ll understand one day squirt.” I calmly say as I pass the room. I refuse to be intimidated by a little girl, despite the butterflies flapping so hard in my gut that I’m convinced they’re going to fly out of my mouth.

Cody is nowhere to be found in the house, so I open the patio door. Sure enough he’s sitting there with Jack. They each have a bottle of beer in their hands and they’re laughing.

“Cody.” I say just loud enough for him to hear over his Dad’s voice.

“Hey Babe, come sit down.” He says beaming.

I can see that they’ve been celebrating Cody’s ‘victory’ and I’m disgusted. “No thanks, can you please take me home.” My head is down now.

“Sure thing Ange.” Cody can sense that I’m upset and his demeanor changes instantly as he pops out of the patio chair. “See you later Dad.” He says conservatively as he wraps a comforting arm around my shoulders. I soften, but make a mental note to speak with him about privacy later.

I look back to wave at Jack and am disturbed. He leers and winks at me as we head toward the front of the house.
