Humanity

Ch. 6 Humanity

When the morning came after the long wedding party, Lord Anderfield was already out of the door and on the road. This couldn’t have made Helen happier. Progress. Doing what a man should do, providing for his family and her habits. The new Lord and Lady Anderfield were not people to let their lives come to a stop for anything.
Although disobedience was not something to stop Helen’s progressive mind, she did not like having to scour her home to look for a little girl who had not been found in her room come morning. After they had gone through the trouble to walk up all the flights of stairs to show her to attic room, tuck her in, and then lock the door. Even though she was at the very tip of their town house, she had still managed to get out. Helen was shocked by this girl’s will. Little girls should never be so forward, and if they wanted to they should be sneaky like Helen was in her youth. But from people in her household, Helen would never accept such disobedience.
It didn’t matter that she didn’t know Helen or people, Helen was certain that the best way to learn was under the rod.
The horror on Helen’s face when she found her sleeping underneath their oleanders in their back yard was enough to send their soon-to-be-fired cook into peals of laughter.
A deadly mistake.
Helen shot her a look that would silence the Queen, herself.
The little chit had even managed to tear and stain her new dress. Well, thought Helen, she just would have to live without new things if she couldn’t take care of them. Or shoes, if she couldn’t bear wear them! But what offended her more than anything was that this sleeping, strange child with dirt staining her face who had raised herself in the wood actually looked prettier that her two utterly refined daughters combined.
Helen became more and more angry as she stared at her new daughter.
She absolutely refused to raise such a child!
This child couldn’t even be sent to a boarding school. She would rain disgrace on all their heads. There was no way that she could allow the girl out of her sights. Something more humanitarian needed to be done with the child.
If this girl wanted to be dirty, messy, and complete disgrace her noble name then she could live like a dog. And work like one. She would be a faithful servant to the family because it was obvious that she could never be a part of it.
Flipping her hair over her shoulder and whipping her dress around, Helen marched like a queen back to her grand house.
“Grab the girl, Diane. She’s your new girl. Brought special from the country by Lord Anderfield to help get this drafty place back in order.”
The cook’s greedy hands closed around El’s wrist. Shocked El awoke and began to struggle, but she was no match for Diane’s girth and was dragged through the small door that lead to the kitchen for her first task.
