epilogue
There was darkness. . .
When the power was fully restored sometime during the wee hours of the morning, they watched the videotape in Karen’s office. Four times. Then they sat for a while without speaking. Karen noticed that Petra did not look nearly as perplexed as she felt.
“Well, we’ve got a couple options, I suppose.”
“There’s only one that I can see,” Petra replied.
“What’s that?”
“We’ve got to destroy that tape.”
“But it’s the only evidence we’ve got! And what are we going to do with Taylor?”
“Why do we have to do anything with him at all?”
Karen ran her teeth along her bottom lip as she considered the question. She was actually afraid of what would happen if the police came to take Taylor away, visions of another Angel remaindered to a system which had no comprehension or acknowledgement of the true monstrosities.
“Dr. Mentjis, do you believe in –“
Karen cut her off. “What? Miracles?”
“No, I was going to ask if you believed in angels.”
Karen laughed, but it was weighed down with a certain ruefulness.
“After that, what choice do I have?”
Petra merely nodded.
“Let’s run the tape one more time.”
Petra pressed Rewind until the counter returned to the appropriate reading, then Play. But the momentary static which signaled the beginning of the tape did not abate.
“What’s wrong? Did you go too far?”
“Not according to the counter.” She hit Fast Forward and they both sat stunned as the tape displayed not the apocalyptic images they had previously viewed, but static. Only static.
“What the hell -“ Karen sputtered.
“I guess it wasn’t up to us after all,” Petra said. She then smiled, but Karen was having a difficult time seeing the humor in anything at the moment.
. . .and then there was light.
Eyes open. Shining dark hair.
Eishka?
No answer. Sounds. People talking. Loudspeaker. She looks up. It’s Petra. She smiles.
“It’s okay, Dun. You’re going to surgery in a bit.”
He can’t talk. He smiles, faintly. Everything in the room seems to be glowing. But he feels no pain. He looks toward the window. Sunset outside. Syrupy light. He looks back at her as she leans in and strokes his hair.
“Fear not, Duncan, for Dog is with thee,” she whispers.
He smiles again, one last time, and knows it is true.
His disciples said, "Show us the place where you are, for we must seek it."
He said to them, "Anyone here with two ears had better listen! There is light within a person of light, and it shines on the whole world. If it does not shine, it is dark."
