Meet Tanako

CHAPTER 6:

“Hello Tanako,” Kiyoshi greeted the woman with a hug, “Come on in!”

As she bit her thumb nail nervously, Michelle slowly pokes her head around the hall corner to find Kiyoshi talking with a very cute, short Asian woman.

The woman had short black hair that barely passes her small ears. She wore very cute tan glasses, and she had tiny freckles covering her cheeks. Unlike Kiyoshi, this woman had removed her shoes before entering the house. Michelle heard the lady ask Kiyoshi, “Are you ready to go?”

“Yes in a minute,” Kiyoshi smiles, “But I’d like you to meet somebody first.”

Tanako raises an eyebrow at Kiyoshi, and gives his a sharp nod. He nods back before motioning Michelle over.

Slowly Michelle appears from around the corner. She stopped biting her nail, and moved both hands down to her front as she slowly made her way over to Kiyoshi and Tanako.

“Tanako,” Kiyoshi said, “I’d like you to meet my cousin, Michelle. Michelle this is my great partner for over three years, Tanako.”

“Well hello there!”

Michelle was shocked by this sudden amount of attention. Tanako had given her a straightforward bow before shaking her hand swiftly. Michelle couldn’t help but slightly smile by this woman’s hyperactive personality. “H—hello.”

“Your cousin,” Tanako turns to Kiyoshi, “This is sort of sudden. When? How?”

“Well,” Kiyoshi chuckles slightly while rubbing the back of his head, “It was rather unexpected. I was pretty surprised, too.”

“Michelle,” Tanako smiles at Michelle, “That’s an American name, isn’t it? Are you from America?”

Michelle replies with a nod and a whispering, “Yes.”

“Wow,” Tanako smiles, “I didn’t know Kiyoshi had any family…”

“Heh,” Kiyoshi snorts, “Neither did I. Michelle will be staying with me for a while. I—I don’t know how long…”

“Oh,” Tanako said, “How come?”

“Well her parents were in an accident,” Kiyoshi began, “And her mother, my aunt, is in a coma right now.”

“Oh how tragic,” Tanako frowns at Michelle, “I’m terribly sorry, dear.”

“It’s—its okay,” Michelle whispers, “I’m—v—very thankful K—Kiyoshi took me in.”

Michelle could see Kiyoshi was proud to hear her say so. He gave off a bright reflection, and gave her a tiny smile.

“Well Kiyoshi is a very thoughtful man,” Tanako turns back to Kiyoshi, “Well; we should really be heading off to work. Officer Sashirou doesn’t appreciate late arrivals.”

“Yes, of course,” Kiyoshi turns his attention on Michelle, “You can do whatever you like. I got games, books, and I got English movies. If you get hungry you can go ahead and raid the kitchen, if you’d like. Will you be alright here by yourself?”

“Don’t worry about me,” Michelle smiles, “I’ll probably just unpack, and maybe sleep some. I’m not used to the time difference yet.”

“Well okay,” Kiyoshi followed Tanako out the door, but he turned his head back in before leaving, “Be safe. Don’t worry, everything will work out. I promise.” With this said, Kiyoshi closed the door, and Michelle was left alone.

Once Kiyoshi was gone, Michelle couldn’t help but think of what he had said. She realized just how kind he was. Though she was unsure of what lay ahead on the road, he seemed brave, and sure that everything would be fine. Michelle knew she liked this about him. He was nice, and caring. Michelle hoped that she’d learn to accept her new home.

--

Sitting in her given bedroom, Michelle had already begun to set up her new room.

Opening the drawers on the tiny white dresser, Michelle evenly placed her clothes into the three separate drawers. Panties and bras with socks, shirts and dresses in one, and pants and shorts in the final.

Once her clothes were all in the proper drawers, Michelle moved to decorate the rooms with her special belongings. She set pictures of her and her parents here, and there. She even set a picture of her with her friend Robin on the white dresser.

Soon Michelle came across her most treasured belonging. Removing the bubble-wrap, Michelle moved her fingers gently over the delicate structure of the white carousel horse. It was still in perfect condition. Michelle sighed in thanks that it had not been wrecked in the suitcase.

Michelle moved her eyes around the room, searching for the perfect spot to set her white carousel horse. She decided on the little table beside her bed. It sat right next to this violet colored lamp.

After decorating her newest bedroom, Michelle took a glance at her sitting alarm clock. She’d have to reset the time to fit her new schedule. She knew it’d take time for her body to adjust to the time difference, but she had a strong, young body. She was sure she could handle it.

Michelle soon moved to the living room. She could see daybreak entering from a medium sized window that looked out over the city. Michelle could see cars flying by from the other side.

Giving a stretch, Michelle decided she was hungry. So she went to the kitchen to prepare herself something to eat.

While eating the ramen cup she found in the pantry, Michelle decided to entertain herself with one of Kiyoshi’s movies. She chose what she thought was an action film, and it turned out to be pretty exciting.

After throwing the cup from her ramen away, Michelle got comfortable in the blue couch. She soon fell into a peaceful sleep as the television echoed off some random Japanese game show.

--

“I can’t believe it,” Tanako laughs, “She’s as cute as a newborn kitten! It’s still hard to believe.”

Entering their office, Kiyoshi sighed as Tanako continued discussing his cousin. “I know, I know,” Kiyoshi grumbles, “Please let it go. It’s not like she’s living with me forever!”

“Oh Kiyoshi,” Tanako laughs, “All I’m saying is that it’s so cool. Perhaps I can try making friends with her, and maybe take her shopping through Tokyo. She might like that!”

“That’s very nice of you,” Kiyoshi smiles while pouring himself some coffee, “She’d like that.”

--

Work went by fast, as usual. Kiyoshi enjoyed his job. He’s worked as an OOP officer since he was young, and though he began working for Officer Wakehiko, Officer Sashirou treats him just as nicely.

A dear person once told Kiyoshi to live a long happy life. Make friends, have a fantastic career, and perhaps find love. Well, Kiyoshi has succeeded with the first two steps. His job is amazing. He’s made many new friends; Tanako his best friend. But the third step—no Kiyoshi has not succeeded there. He had been in love once before, but since the person he loved left him, Kiyoshi’s never drawn feelings for anyone else.

This was the future, however, and Kiyoshi barely thought of his past. He was happy now. But now he has a cousin, and he must take care of her.

Kiyoshi admitted that he was afraid. He was afraid Michelle would not learn to like him. He knew this was just as tough on her as it was him, but he really wished to get to know her better. What interests her? What does she dislike? He wanted to know it all. Coming to the decision, Kiyoshi felt he needed to sit down and talk with her. A long time ago, Kiyoshi’s dear friend did this when the two got to know each other. Kiyoshi would use the same maneuver with his cousin. He smiled at the thought, hoping Michelle wouldn’t mind talking with him.

--

As soon as work was over, Tanako took Kiyoshi home on her moving motorbike.

“Well here we are,” Tanako cheerfully shouted as she pulled to a stop, “Say hello to Michelle for me, and don’t forget to mention my shopping idea to her, okay?”

Kiyoshi laughs as Tanako gives him a wink. “You bet! See you tomorrow!”

--

Kiyoshi reached out for the doorknob to see if Michelle had locked it or not. It was locked, and Kiyoshi nodded. He thought it smart of Michelle to lock up behind him.

Removing his pair of jingling keys, Kiyoshi opened the door to find Michelle snoozing on his couch. Closing the door behind him, Kiyoshi frowned at the site. “Poor thing,” Kiyoshi thought, “She’s exhausted!”

Kicking off his work shoes, Kiyoshi removes his jacket and sets it on a tan chair before walking over to Michelle’s sleeping form. He was unsure if he should wake her or not. If he did wake her, she’d probably wake on her own in a while and be up all night. If he did wake her, she’d—probably be up all night. Kiyoshi giggled at this, and went to shake her awake, “Hey Michelle—wake up,” but as Michelle slightly moved in her sleep, something on her skin made Kiyoshi’s heart beat faster.

Michelle’s tight shirt had moved up while she slept. It uncovered a partial of her stomach; a ways up her belly-button. And there on her skin was something Kiyoshi never expected to see. It was a P shape.

Kiyoshi’s right hand moved so swiftly. He placed it over his chest; placed over where his heart beat fast from under his skin.

That mark! Kiyoshi knew that mark; he’s seen it before. Sweat began to form over his forehead. His body grew tense at the sight. This couldn’t be—happening. Kiyoshi tried to blink the mark away, but with no luck.

Michelle groaned as her eyes slowly opened. She found Kiyoshi staring down at her with this shocked expression. Michelle suddenly began to panic, “K—Kiyoshi?”

“That mark,” Kiyoshi gasped, “You—you have the mark…”

“What?” Michelle was confused, but then noticed her cousin had been staring at the mark on her stomach. She blinked a few times as she, herself, stared at it. She was bewildered by Kiyoshi’s sudden look of terror. “What, this? It’s only a birthmark.”

Only a birthmark, she says, but Kiyoshi knew otherwise. It was no birthmark. “P—puppet….”

“Huh,” Michelle blinks, “What was that?”

“You—you are a…” Kiyoshi tried to concentrate, “You’re a puppet.”

Michelle felt truly scared now. She began to shake at the mention of that word. Though she had not one clue as to what Kiyoshi spoke, Michelle somehow knew it was important, “I don’t understand. You’re—you’re scaring me!”

Kiyoshi began to come back, then, at the sight of Michelle’s forming tears. Those same sparkling blue eyes; he did not want to make Michelle cry. “I’m sorry,” Kiyoshi gets to his feet, “I’m so sorry.” Grabbing his head, Kiyoshi fumbled towards his room. “I—I think I need to take a small nap. I’ll be up in time to—to make us some dinner.” With those final words, Kiyoshi vanished into his room; closing his door in the process.

Still staring befuddled, Michelle pushed her shirt down, covering the mark on her side. She hated the birthmark. Her parents had told her it was special; it made her special, but Michelle hid it from all she knew. She hated it with all her heart. And now her cousin just had to see. This arrangement was not ending well.

--

In his dark room, Kiyoshi had sunk to the floor. He held his head, and breathed heavily. His chest hurt, for some reason.

Moving his eyes down, Kiyoshi went to open his shirt. There on his chest was a mark. It was just like Michelle’s, only a little bigger. Kiyoshi began to sob; he lowered his face into his arms, and let his mouth whisper out the name of a person he’s not heard of for over four years, “…Luke…”
