Zero hour and percussion tech were both tense, but everyone knew why. Everyone knew how close McGee had been to Brandon Peters, and how much her death had affected him. Everyone knew how quiet and brittle and raw he’d been since the accident. And everyone knew that Justin loved Brandon very, very much.
It didn’t surprise them when Mr. Tumbler called Brandon in to be in Percussion Tech after Sara died, to be close to Justin. It didn’t surprise them that Justin positioned himself close to Brandon in both classes, and almost never left Brandon by himself. When Brandon made mistakes in the music, when Tumbler had to struggle not to yell at someone so emotionally fragile, no one was surprised when after Tumbler went in his office, and Brandon bent his head and began to cry softly, that Justin took him in his arms and gently rocked him back and forth, whispering soothing nonsense in his ear.
