I Know That Now
Carter and Rachel walked back into the house. Carter slowed down. Rachel stopped and grabbed him by the elbow. She glared him. They walked into the living room. Renee stood up with wide eyes.
"What are you doing with Carter?" Renee cried.
"He has to talk to you about something." Rachel said calmly. She pushed Carter forward. Carter and Renee sat down on the loveseat.
"Renee... Rachel told me about you wanting to make or run moonshine." Carter said.
"YOU DID WHAT?!?!" Renee screamed at Rachel as she bolted up.
“WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?!?! ALL I WANT TO DO IS HELP YOU WITH THE FAMILY BUSINESS!! NOW, YOU'RE DRAGGING MY BOYFRIEND INTO THIS TO TRY AND TALK ME OUT OF IT?!?!?" Renee screamed.
Rachel lit up a cigar as she leaned against the doorway. Her face remained expressionless. Her eyes bored into Renee. A long trail of smoke escaped from Rachel's lips.
"ANSWER ME, FOR THE LOVE OF PETE!!!" Renee screamed.
"Sweetie, calm down." Carter stood up and placed his hand on her shoulder.
"DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO, DAMN IT!!!" Renee swatted Carter's hand away. Renee turned her attention back to Rachel.
"The reason I don't want you dealing with moonshine is because of Mom." Rachel said. A hint of pain, anger and sadness poured into her eyes for the briefest second.
"MOM DIED BECAUSE SHE RAN OFF THE ROAD BY ACCIDENT!!" Renee cried.
"No... It wasn't an accident. She was ran off the road by Gregory Jackson. He said Mom wronged him on a delivery, that she gave him a bad delivery of 'shine. He sat out to kill her and he did." Rachel said.
"I THOUGHT YOU WERE SUPPOSE TO RUN THAT DELIVERY THAT EVENING!!" Renee cried as a tear raced down her cheek.
"I was... but I had been going nonstop with deliveries and making 'shine for nine days straight and Mom told me that she would make the delivery." Rachel walked over and sat down on the couch.
"There's not a day that goes by that I don't think about that. I was tired the day I made that 'shine. Because of that, it had turned out bad and Mom paid for it." Rachel said. She put her cigar into an ashtray and buried her face in her hands.
Renee sunk down onto the loveseat. She had no idea that Rachel had carried that around with her for five years. Five years of guilt, five years of pain. It suddenly made sense to Renee on why Rachel didn't want her to run or make moonshine.
"Renee, I love you and I don't want ANYTHING to happen to you." Rachel looked up at Renee with a tear stained face.
”I know that now." Renee said. She got up and sat down on Rachel's lap. It had been forever since the two had sat like that.
"I love you, too, Rae." Renee said. Rachel smiled softly as she stroked Renee's hair. Carter breathed a sigh of relief.
"Can I ask you a question?" Renee asked Rachel.
"Sure." Rachel said.
"Why did you try to get Carter to talk to me?" Renee asked.
"Because he loves you as much as I do, and like me, he doesn't want you to get hurt. I figured you'd listen to him because you didn't seem to listen to me." Rachel said. Renee just smiled softly. She may act like she didn't listen to Rachel but she did listen.
"I'm glad that you two worked things out." Carter said. Renee and Rachel smiled. They were glad too. Carter left knowing that everything had been smoothed out.
