Hope Lost

A week later, hope seemed lost to all that were on the island. Isis had thought it best to split the group up for daytime scavenging as well as ship watch. Nate and Clara were paired together, she went with Alex, and Gabe took Abby.

On this particular morning, her and Alex were getting more food, seeing as the hog they had killed the week before was long gone, Nate and Clara were, unfortunately for them, on Vicky duty, and Gabe and Abby were on the shore looking for any signs of ships.

After depositing their newest kill at the cavern, Alex and Isis went to check on Clara and Nate, worried about their time with Vicky who seemed to be getting worse and worse as the days went on. They made it to the hut and could already here her yelling at Clara.

“You’re a fucking doctor! Do something, bitch!”

“I don’t have the fucking antibiotics, you stuck up whore! And even if I did, what in your fucking mind tells you that I would be willing to help you? You killed my best friend! What right does that give you to tell me what to do?” Clara walked out of the hut with Nate close behind her, slapping the shitty door behind her. “So help me, Nate, if Isis doesn’t kill her, I will.”

“What’s wrong with her?” Alex walked a little ahead of Isis and came to Clara first. “I mean besides the obvious.”

“Her wound is infected. She’s going to need antibiotics soon or she’s going to die.”

“Such a shame.” Isis let the sarcasm fill her voice as she spoke, hearing Vicky bitch and gripe about how uncomfortable the bed she was on was even through the hut. Isis responded with a yell. “Shut up, Vicky! At least we gave you a bed.”

“Isis, I swear when I’m about to walk I’m going to kick your ass!”

“Keep talking, Vicky. I seriously don’t think you’ll make it through morning talking like that.” Nate looked at everyone as he spoke and frowned. “What? At the rate she’s going, I’m going to kill her.”

Shaking her head, Isis opened her mouth to say something when they heard shouting from the shore. They all began to run in time to see the ship in the distance, Gabe and Abby yelling at the top of their lungs. They all joined in the shouting, but the ship never moved from its course.

They shouted until they couldn’t shout no more. Clara began to cry and Nate wrapped his arms around her, telling her they were going to be rescued soon. Isis wasn’t too sure, but she didn’t say anything as she headed back toward the hut.

Alex caught up with her and grabbed her arm, pulling her to face him. “What are you thinking, Isis? I’ve known you well enough in the last month to know that look on your face means you’re not thinking of anything good.”

“How many ships have we seen in the last month, Alex? How many times have we screamed until our throats bled only to have them keep going? We’re never going to get rescued.” Isis felt the hope she had had leave her voice.

Alex sighed and wrapped his arms around her. “We will be rescued, Isis. And when we get out of here, we will continue what we have going here. You and I will be the greatest couple anyone knows. We’re already the hottest couple on this island.”

Isis laughed and shook her head against his shoulder. “We’re the only couple on this island.”

“I don’t know about that, Isis. Nate and Clara are getting kind of close.”

“You noticed that too, huh?” Isis smiled and pulled back. “I guess we are the hottest couple on the island then. Also the best at hunting.”

Alex smiled and kissed Isis hard. She smiled, but kissed him back, hearing the grunt of Vicky coming from the hut. “If you two are finished making out, I could use a little help here.”

“Help yourself, Vicky.” Isis grabbed Alex’s hand and pulled him off toward the forest. She had plans for Alex to help her relieve the depression and stress she was feeling right now, and she knew that he wouldn’t object.

Later that night, Isis slipped quietly from Alex’s arms, walking toward the entrance to the cave. She exited the cave and headed to the hut that Vicky occupied, knowing exactly what she was going to do to ease some of the stress on the island.

She slipped into the hut and looked down at the moaning body of Vicky. She stepped on a twig and Vicky snapped to attention, groaning as she saw Isis. “What the fuck are you doing here?”

“Keeping everyone else on this island from going completely insane.” She dropped to her knees and hit Vicky hard in the leg, making her cry out in pain. She found the pressure point she wanted and jabbed her finger hard into it, watching the light die in Vicky’s eyes. “You killed my brother and tried to make everyone’s life miserable. I’m not going to let them suffer because of you.”

She felt Vicky’s pulse disappear, but held down her fingers for a moment before standing and looking at the corpse that had once caused so much trouble on the island. “May you rot in Hell.”

She walked out of the hut and ran into Alex. He lifted her chin as she looked at her feet, afraid he would see what she had done on her face. He kissed her gently and smiled. “I was coming here to do it too. Nate and Clara are on their way. We were going to make it a group effort. You didn’t have to do it alone.”

“Yes, I did. I’ve killed a lot of people. What’s one more?” Isis stood in the midst of her friends, as they arrived, and knew that this was one murder she didn’t need to feel guilty about. Tomorrow would be a better day without Vicky. Maybe she could hope for rescue again. Maybe.
