Chapter 6
When we land, Mark takes me to a car that’s waiting for me, but first I go to the bathroom and change into jeans and a tee-shirt. The shirt is navy blue, and it says my name on it and US army on the shoulder. I go back to the car. “You look nice in that Fae.” Mark says jokingly.
“Shut up.” I smile.
The drive to the camp is long and boring, but is very pretty. There are mountains and a lot of trees. It looks like we are going to the middle of nowhere. “Mark, where are we going? And are we there yet?” I ask, laughing a bit.
“We are going to the camp, and the drive will be another 30 min. so we aren’t there yet Fae.”
“Great.” I hate long car rides. I don’t mind long plane rides, but I really have long car rides. It has already been an hour. I decide to read the new book I bought at the airport. It’s the new Gossip Girl book.
When we arrive at the camp, I see a couple of officers separating everyone into cabins.
Mark walks me up to one of the officers and hands him a note. The man nods and says, “Ok, I’ll take this young lady to her cabin whenever she’s ready.” the man turns and separates more people.
“Ok Fae, this is it. This man is a nice man. I’m leaving now.”
I start to cry.
“Don’t cry Fae. I’ll miss you very much. Have fun, and good luck. I’ll try to write you every day. I love you very much.” I give him a big hug.
“Bye Mark, I’ll miss you too. I’ll write whenever I can. I promise.” I give him another hug, and he leaves.
“Ok Fae, come with me.” the man says.
He takes me to a cabin that looks like all the others. It’s a log cabin with a fire place. It holds about 16 people, and it has a bathroom and shower in it. “This is your cabin. Unpack and then you can go to the dining cabin for lunch.” He then leaves.
When I go inside, everyone stares at me. I notice I’m the only girl there. I walk to my bunk, and start to unpack my stuff. I can hear some of the guys whispering around me.
“Hey Fae! You’re in here to? That’s so cool!” It’s Stephen. He has just walked out of the bathroom. He has the bed right next to mine. I’m very happy to see him.
“Ya, I’m in here. I’m kinda glad I met you on the plane, because otherwise, I would have felt very alone right now.” I look around the room. All of the guys look a lot older then I am. I start thinking about my friends back home and how much I miss them. I also think about my parents. I think about the fact that if they had never died, I wouldn’t be here in the war right now.
Thinking about my parents makes me start to cry. Stephen comes over and sits on my bed. He gives me a hug and says, “Please don’t cry Fae! I don’t like seeing you cry! Please stop!”
After I stop crying, we all go eat lunch. When I get to the dining cabin I look around. It was all full of boys, except for one other girl. She looks older than me. She’s tall and skinny. She’s wearing a purple shirt with jeans. She has long blond hair.
Stephen asks me if I would sit with him since he doesn’t know anyone else ether. “Sure I’d love to sit with you,” I reply.
After we get our food we sit down. I ask him, “So what made you want to come to the war?”
“I wanted to go.”
“Really?”
“Ya, what about you?”
“I was forced to go. The president made me come. I know that sounds crazy, but it’s true.”
After lunch we go back to our cabin. When we get there, we see our uniforms and guns, with a note on our beds.
I go to my bed and read the letter.
Hello Lieutenant! This is one or your new uniforms. You will get a few more later. By 2:00 you need to be in the courtyard wearing this uniform. Since you are new, when you get there, go to the blue table that has a big sign on it. The sign says: ‘New’. There you will be put into your lines. Hope you are having fun so far, because it’s going to be a lot more fun. See your later, and good luck lieutenant.
~Colonel Pocket
I look at the gun on the bed. “Wow this gun’s huge!”
“Yes it is and you’ll have fun using it.” Colonel Pocket says. He has just walked in. He walks towards me, and everyone stands up and salutes him.
Laughing he says, “Guys stop! Fae, come with me. I need to talk to you.”
We walk outside. He takes me to a hangar and shows me what plane I would be flying. It’s huge! It’s red and black. He shows me how to work it, but it doesn’t take me long to figure it out.
On the way back to the cabin, Colonel Pocket says, “If you have any questions or need anything, come to me. Ok? You are one of the youngest here. Also, your job is special. You will be told more about it later. Don’t tell anyone that your job is special! Ok?”
“Yes, sir!” I go back to the cabin, and everyone is already changed into their uniforms. I go to my bed and I change into mine. My uniform is jeans and a white shirt. I put my hair up in a pony tail, and then we walk to the courtyard, and go to the blue table. There is a man sitting behind it. He looks like the man that has the bed on the other side of me.
He says, “Hi. My name is Lieutenant Jackson. Form a line in front of me, and I’ll ask ya’ll some information.”
After it’s my turn, and he asks me some information, he tells me to stand behind him until he tells me where to go.
Lieutenant Jackson is a very handsome man. He is about the same height as I am. He has short, short brown hair, brown eyes, and looks a little older than I am.
I stand there for a long time while he tells everyone else where to go. Another man is walking by and sees me and says, “Hi! My name is Lieutenant Punk. Actually you can call me Seth.” Seth is a chubby boy. A little taller than I am. He had dirty blond hair and blue eyes.
While Lieutenant Jackson is doing paperwork, I’m listening to Colonel Dolittle talk to everyone else. “You probably won’t see him much, but never talk back to him.” He has finished his work.
“Ok, I won’t.”
When Colonel Dolittle is done, he comes over to me, and tells me to follow him. I don’t want to disobey him, so I follow.
“I’ve heard about your special assignment. You are going to be a combat fighter, but you will also be a spy. You will get more information about that tomorrow.” He then leaves me.
“Shut up.” I smile.
