"Let me out of here!" Elizabeth screamed. She had been locked in a tiny room. The door blended in with the walls so she couldn't find it. But it was above her that made her panic. The ceiling wasn't a ceiling. It was made of thick glass that showed the sky above her. If the sun came up and she was still in this room she would be burned alive.
She had tried to break the glass but it was too thick. Something had been done to it to prevent someone of her strength from breaking it. Her body started to shake. She wanted out of this room.
"You can't leave me in here like this!" she screamed, pounding her fists into the stone wall.
"Yes, I can." a voice whispered. Elizabeth recognized the voice. It was the same one she had heard at the house. The last thing she remembered was Ashton being thrown through Savannah's wall. She hoped that he was alright. If something had happened to him... "Nothing terrible happened to your mate. Do not worry." the voice said.
"What do you want?" she asked.
"To hurt the family you belong to. To cripple them beyond repair."
"Are you going to kill me?" Elizabeth asked.
"Yes." the voice snapped. Elizabeth dropped to her knees. This couldn't be happening. She didn't want to die, to really die. Tears streamed down her face.
"Please, dont' kill me." She whimpered.
"It's too late for that now. The sun is rising and I know that you're strong enough to stay awake through half the day. It makes it that much better." Elizabeth snapped her head up to look at the giant window.
The darkness of the night was already beginning to slip away. Being replaced by the light purple of the sunrise. Elizabeth began to panic even more. She lunged backwards until her back hit the wall. Drawing her legs to her chest, she wrapped her arms around them and started to rock back and forth. Her mind started to shut itself down. She was being put into a state of nothingness. To where she couldn't speak, couldn't focus on anything. She was just there, an empty shell. Panic and fear were the only things that she could feel. To be consumed by those two things was almost worse than death. If she stayed like this too long she would never be able to come out of it. But if she was going to die anyway, why should she care?
Ashton.
Just thinking about him made tears well up in her eyes. What was he going to do once he found out what happened to her? And Maurice? He had been a father to her when she had nothing. She prayed that neither of them did anything stupid. Mostly Ashton. He had a temper that was easy to bring out. She had been on the receiving end of his temper more than once. And none of them had been either of their faults. He had such a blind rage that he blacked out, never knowing what he was going. The only person who could put up enough of a fight to stop him was Maurice. But would he be able to stop Ashton in time? Would anyone be able to?
Dawn was growing as the time passed. Soon rays of light shined through the glass, leaving a blanket of sunshine on the opposite side of the room. Elizabeth's eyes were locked on that patch of light, watching it creep close and closer. Time passed by so slowly and she couldn't take her eyes from the light.
It wasn't until the light was inches from her that she shot up into the air. She stood and pressed her back against the wall. Her nails dug into the stone, trying to find anything to let her out of the room.
"Please, let me out." she cried in a whimper. Elizabeth could feel the warmth of the sun on her skin seconds before the light covered her. At once her skin started to smoke. It was the worst pain she had ever felt. Her skin was burning. She began to scream, a high pitched, pain filled scream. She collapsed to the ground, knowing she would soon die.
Two hands grabbed her writhing body and pulled her through an opening in the wall. She fell onto a cold, we floor. Elizabeth curled up into a ball. Her body was in so much pain. She looked almost human. Her skin was pink, like a bad sun burn. Someone threw a bucket of water on her. She jerked on the floor and rolled away from the person.
"Hey, relax. I'm not going to hurt you." the man said. Elizabeth groaned.
"Like you haven't hurt me already?" she snapped. She tried to sit up but her limbs were too sore.
"Let me help you." he said, bending down. Elizabeth tried to move away from him. "Stop moving." he told her. He gently grabbed her arms and helped her sit up. Liz winced.
"Why are you helping me?" she asked.
"Because I'm not as heartless as my master. But I do have to act like it sometimes." he gave her a small smile. "What's your name?"
"Elizabeth."
"My name's Evan." he said
"Evan, what kind of name is that?"
"I rather like it." he flashed her a grin and she couldn't help but smile back. "Do you think you can stand?"
"With help, maybe." Evan stood and slowly helped her to her feet. The movement made a wave of pain surge through her.
"It's alright. It won't take long to get you out of here. But it will take longer to get you back home."
"Where are we?" she asked.
"Montana."
"Montana!" she yelled. Evan clamped a hand over her mouth.
"Shut up or you're going to get us both caught."
"Sorry." she whispered when he took his hand away from her mouth. It was hard for her to walk down the stone passageway. Her muscles ached from the strain just walking put on her. Evan had to catch her a couple times to prevent her from falling.
"This would go a lot faster if you'd just let me carry you." he muttered. Evan kept his arm tight around her waist.
"I don't like to be carried." she told him.
"Doesn't matter, I'm going to have to when we get outside so we don't get caught." Elizabeth sighed.
"Fine. Once we get outside you can carry me."
"Good." Evan stopped walking.
"What?" she asked.
"Can't you smell it?" he asked closing his eyes and taking a deep breath. Elizabeth closed her own eyes. She could smell it: nature. The trees, animals, the very earth.
"It smells wonderful." she told him. Evan reached down and picked her up.
"Hold on." he said. Elizabeth had a second to hold on before Evan jumped straight up. She let out a small scream, waiting for the ceiling to collide with them. Instead they kept going up. How high could they go? The only thing she knew was that the air was getting warmer. Warmer? No! That meant the sun was close. Was he crazy? She began to squirm in his arms, trying to get out of them. But he was considerably stronger than she was. Even if they were both vampires. Within seconds Evan had them on solid ground again. They were standing in a cave. The mouth of it was only about fifty feet from them. The sun was shining brightly.
"How do you expect us to get outside? If you don't remember, the sun is up!" she said in an agitated whisper. "Why are you awake anyway?" she asked, finally realizing it.
"I'm about as powerful as you. I can be awake now, too." Evan placed her on the ground. He walked to the nearest wall and grabbed two black cloaks that were hidden there. He threw one to Elizabeth. "Put it on. It'll prevent the sun from killing us." The cloak was dripping wet.
"Do I want to know why this is wet?" she asked.
"This way it'll take longer for us to burn to death."
"Oh, well that's lovely." she muttered. The front of the cloak was sewn together as well as the ends of the sleeves. She pulled it on over her head. There was about five feet of extra material at her feet. Evan looked the same. They drew their heads up and Evan picked her up again.
"Whatever you do, do not move." he told her. Elizabeth nodded and tightened her grip around Evan. Evan locked eyes with the outside of the cave, took a step to the right and started running.
