A Boy's Resolve
Lady Aiyko smiled as she petted the head of her oldest son, her own little Chou. It was only by the gods blessing that her child had been born with a birthmark shaped like a butterfly. The son of her beloved lover, she had feared that her child would be punished for her affair.
“You are my beautiful little butterfly,” she said as she combed her fingers through the sleeping child’s hair.
It would not be long before her second child was born, the child of her hateful husband. The only reason this child had even been conceived was because the man had forced himself upon her. She had twice tried to kill the child inside her womb, but both times the child lived and only seemed to grow stronger.
“This child inside me will be the snake,” she said with a vengeful smile on her face. “That man will know my suffering.”
She could imagine it now. When the man found out that his only son was the snake he would wail and moan; he would curse the gods and pray for it all to be some kind of horrible joke. And she would laugh and laugh until her throat became hoarse and she could laugh no longer.
The child would die in the worst of ways and suffer throughout life, and she would relish every moment of it.
“He killed your father, my beloved lover,” she said, then smiled. “But I will pay him back tenfold. I will make him watch his beloved child suffer and die.”
The boy whimpered in his sleep, almost as if he could clearly hear his mother’s hate filled words.
“But don’t worry. I will make sure that he pays for everything he’s done,” she said with a smile on her face.

“Wait! Wait for me brother!’ Little Asakura said as he toddled behind his older brother. The boy’s blazing red hair was braided back into a braid that was now so long that the tip of it reached above his ankles. It was tradition that the boy’s hair would not be cut until his tenth birthday.
Chou pretended to not hear his brother as he strode down the marble tiled hall. He was a proud young man, tall with jet-black hair that reached his shoulders; despite his young age he already had a commanding spirit and seemed wiser beyond his ten years.
Since the day of his brother’s birth something had changed about the boy. He became soft spoken and kept to himself. When asked if he would like to see his younger brother he would only leave in a hurry or mutter some apology and excuse. Everyone working in the Orochi household noticed that the boy avoided his brother as much as possible. The only problem was that no one could understand why. Chou had been so excited about having a little brother when he had first heard about his mother’s pregnancy.
“Brother! Brother please wait for me,” Asakura said as he tried to walk faster. However, the moment the little boy began to walk faster, he tripped because of the long, heavy robes he wore. The little boy hit the ground hard and began to cry from the pain in his hands and knees.
When Chou heard his brother’s cries he turned around and ran over to him. There was a look of alarm on the usually stoic boy’s face.
“Asakura, are you alright?” Chou asked as he helped the boy into a sitting position.
The little boy rubbed his eyes with his fist. It did not take him long to stop crying. “I’m fine,” the little boy said, and then he smiled as he threw his arms around his brother. “I got you!”
The older of the two blinked in confusion. Had this all been some kind of game? But he was sure his brother had not tripped on purpose. Or had he?
“What do you mean?” Chou asked as he fought the desire to push the little boy away from him.
“I looked for you all day, but you didn’t hear,” Asakura answered with a pout on his face. He then hugged the older boy tighter. “But now I’ve got you. Can we play now?”
Chou sighed softly as he gently detached the boy from around him. When ever his brother touched him he always felt a pain; something old that could not be described. ‘It must be because he is the snake’ he thought to himself.
His mother had told him about the story of the Snake and Butterfly. The evil Snake had terrorized the village until the day the high priestess transformed herself into a beautiful butterfly. The butterfly then lured the snake away from the village and down into a deep pit where the snake died. However, before the death of the snake, it cursed the bloodline of the butterfly.
‘He is the snake. The one that will bring this village to ruin’ Chou thought to himself. It was hard to think of the cute red haired boy as something evil, but Chou knew the truth, so it was something he would have to bear.
It would be up to him to kill his brother before that could happen. And in order to do that, he could not see him as a brother.
“Stay away from me, snake,” Chou said as he pushed the boy away from him and walked away.
He would not allow himself to be tricked by the snake. He would save the village and get revenge for his mother and father.
‘I must not be like the other butterflies. I must destroy the snake completely. I will hate him so I do not fail’’ he thought to himself as he forced himself to ignore his brother’s cries.
