In The Beginning Pt. 1

Yvette’s life had been quite simple before she had been given guards. She’d wake up, eat breakfast, go to classes, eat lunch, go to more classes, eat dinner, mingle with her sisters, go to bed. It had been monotonous and horrid for she had longed for a change. Then the day came when she and Endora had turned 15 and soon came the day they were called to the throne room.

“Father?,” Yvette asked as she entered, followed by her sister. She wasn’t exactly sure she wanted to be called into the throne room for the only times she had been in there had been for boring occasions or for lectures from her mother and father. “You called for us?”

Turning to face her and Endora were 8 men, lined in a row, the King sitting at his throne behind them. Yvette’s mind first assumed they were all there as her father’s new guards but then it hit her that she had just turned 15 and that meant life wouldn’t be so simple anymore. Her father got up, smiling down on his daughters, past the men. “Yvette you look quite lovely today dear.” Yvette quickly blushed and glanced over at a clearly upset Endora. Complements from her father were few and far between with so many children and princes to take over her fathers thoughts.

“Thank you father. Was there something you wanted to talk about?”

“Yes yes,” he said raising his hand to motion towards the men, “You are both 15 now and that means it is time to be assigned guards like your older sisters have.”

Yvette wasn’t exactly sure how excited she was about it. She studied all of them closely, as good looking as they all were she truly hoped they weren’t as stiff as they seemed standing there in front of her father. She looked at Endora, trying to figure out how she felt about it and she was obviously pleased, smoothing out her dress and batting her eyes. Yvette began to feel a little self councious, although she knew she was much better looking than Endora, she hadn’t planned on standing in front of 8 men.

John’s mind was racing the second she had stepped into the room. She was beautiful in every way. Young, but beautiful. She seemed nervous and it made him fall for her even more. From the way the king had greeted her, he could tell she was the favorite by far. He truly hoped he’d be chosen for her.

Patrick was thinking the same. As Yvette spoke with her father, inquiring as to why they had been called to the throne room her looked to his sides. Mal stood stiffly but he could tell by the look in his eyes he was impressed with the girl. Patrick and Mal had been friends for so long he was used to competing for a girl’s affection with his friend.

Mal was impressed, watching her stand there with a small glow around her. He could smell her from there, a smell of oranges.

Cameron looked at Endora’s eyes go up and down the line and he could tell she was quietly studying them. As soon as her eyes rested on him he looked away, hoping the choice wouldn’t be made by her. Not that Endora was ugly, per se. But the feeling he got was not the same as when he looked at Yvette. Her eyes, upon becoming silent as her father went to speak, linked to his, sending a small chill down his spine.

“So my dear daughters, would you like to know how your guards were chosen for you?”

Yvette heart started to beat a little faster as she turned her gaze to her father. “Daddy?” The King’s eyes lit up as she said it. Argon had never heard a daughter call him that to his face and he watched his daughter turn bright pink when she realized what she had just called him. He regretted that she would be scared to call him that but he knew that it came with being King. At that moment, he didn’t regret for one second that he was bending the rules this once for assigning guards for his daughters. Upon being reminded by his advisors that he would have to choose guards for his daughters, Yvette and Endora, he had quickly gone to speak with his first, and most beloved wife. He had wanted her to choose which guards would be right for his favorite daughter. The 4 not chosen would be given to Endora.

“Your mother chose your guards my daughter. I believe she knows you better than I do and I only want the best for you.” Yvette felt herself turn red again, not knowing how to take the sudden burst of affection from her father. Endora meanwhile felt her anger grow. This was the beginning of the hatred between the two sisters. Not that they had ever been close but they were not enemies before that day.

Mal had been placed in charge of her three other guards, having been the guard with the most experience and who had been in the service of the king for much longer. All of them had been in the last war against the kingdom of Jilander. This was their reward, to live in the castle and take charge of a princess. They had all hoped not to get stuck with a difficult, spoiled brat and luckily he, Patrick, Cameron, and John had been lucky. The four had been in the war together, fighting side by side, but now this would be quite a different kind of war, especially since they all suddenly had become quite attracted to the princess.

Nothing had happened for about a year, Yvette at 15 had no mind for anything more than a childish crush on them, but now at 16 things were changing. John was now 19, Patrick was 21, Cameron and Mal 23. She had become quite comfortable with them, to the point of sleeping in their beds when she was lonely at night, and lounging around all day with them. She started to realize, little by little, she may not have been the only one with a crush when slowly they all began spatting and arguing over the time each got to spend alone with her.

The night of a ball, in honor of a nobleman, had been a pain in Yvette’s backside. She hated the way she looked, the way she felt. So when asked to dance with the son of a noble, she wasn’t quite thrilled. “So princess,” the boy said, dancing with her to a traditional dance, “You don’t seem happy to dance with me. Most of these girls would die for a moment with me you know.”

She hated cocky and that sure as hell was what he was, cocky and annoying. “Well I am sorry I don’t feel that way, you should have asked one of my sisters to dance with you.”

“Oh no, you are the most beautiful of your sisters. Together we could make fine grandsons for the king.”

Yvette felt a lump in her throat of disgust. She felt him twirl her about but she stopped abruptly, her eyes narrow in anger. “Excuse me?”

The boy seemed nervous, fidgeting a second before composing himself, reaching his hand out to her, “Princess, please....” She rolled her eyes and headed straight out the doors towards the garden. She felt anger creep over her as she walked out the room and everyone whispered. As soon as she stood alone she screamed, jumping up and down in fury. Suddenly, without warning, she heard a laugh, very familiar to her.

“Cameron stop laughing, it’s not funny,” Yvette said as she turned to face him. He felt his heart instantly start to race as he looked at her, breathtaking in the moonlight. “I didn’t want to go to this thing in the first place you know....”

Cameron smiled, holding his hand out to her. “Yes you did, you wanted to dance.”

She raised her eyebrow, reaching out for his hand as she felt her body become quite tense. “Are you asking me to dance Cameron?”

“No,” he said with a laugh, pulling her close as he began to slow dance with her, “I AM dancing with you.”

They stood there under the moon, the music from the party in the distance as they slow danced. “What were you doing out here anyways Cameron?”

“I am supposed to make sure you made it back alright tonight. I didn’t want to wait with all the other guards and so I decided to take a walk.”

Yvette smiled, pressing her face into his chest. She took a deep breath and looked up into his eyes, feeling her heart melt. Without warning, Cameron’s lips approached hers. This became her first kiss.

From this moment on the fight to be a “first” had commenced.
