Chapter Twenty Nine

Chapter Twenty-Nine

“Are you in school?” Ayden asked.

“No,” Kalena said. “I wouldn’t even be here if Rowan and Garret hadn’t saved me.” A small smile graced her lips. “The jerks.”

“Yeah, Garret told me about your past,” Ayden said casually, watching her face very closely. “Why did you leave the Predators?”

“I don’t see how that’s any of your business,” Kalena snapped.

“It’s my business because I don’t trust vampire hunters,” Ayden said. “Somehow, being a vampire, I find that kind of hard. You’re close to my best friend’s match, I’m just making sure that you’re not going to stab her in the back.” His eyes narrowed. “Literally.”

“A leech with loyalty,” Kalena said both mocking and genuinely surprised. He crossed his arms. “Look, I don’t like having my honesty called into question. Garret trusts me, isn’t that enough for you?”

“No, Garret’s too trusting, I’ve always thought that. I trust his judgment to an extent but trusting a hunter… that’s not a wise move for a vampire.” He signed deflating. “Look, I don’t want to fight with you.”

Kalena glared up at him. “Could have fooled me.” She sighed. “I don’t have the energy for this.”

“You hungry?”

“I had ice cream for breakfast.”

A brow arched. “I’m a doctor and that’s not really healthy.”

She snorted. “Whatever.”

“You want to accompany me for breakfast and get some real food? My treat.”

True amusement showed in her eyes. “Are you asking me on a date, Ayden?”

“I don’t like eating alone. Plus, maybe then we can learn to get along.”

“And you can figure out whether or not you can trust me.”

“I won’t deny it.”

“Fine. But we’re going Dutch.”

He laughed. “Works for me. Who’s wearing the wooden shoes?”

Rowan found Kalena waiting outside the admissions office sitting on the curb. “You’re late,” Kalena said hopping to her feet.

“Tell me about it,” Rowan sighed. “Cherish was worried about Cat so we were looking for her.”

“She okay?”

“Yeah, she finally responded to our calls. She just said she wanted to be left alone.” Rowan followed Kalena as the hunter walked to an old warehouse. “This is kind of creepy.”

“You really are a terrible vampire,” Kalena smiled climbing through a broken window. She hopped down almost falling after the one story drop.

“So I’ve been told,” Rowan said smiling back. She climbed through and dropped gracefully landing in the predatory crouch.

There it was, Kalena thought. The pure vampire instinct. Rowan hopped to her feet and stretched lithely. It was worse, Kalena reasoned, because Rowan didn’t even realize she was doing it. “Ready?”

“Yep. Don’t know how we’re going to get out, but let’s go.”

“Want to learn some Tai Bo first?”

“Whatever you want to start with.” Rowan turned out to be a very fast learner. They quickly went through all of the beginner moves and moved on to the intermediate. They stopped after two hours. “That was fun. I should have started that long ago. Um… How are we going to get out?”

“Climb.”

“Climb?” Rowan repeated dubiously.

“Or you could jump.”

“That high? I don’t think so.”

“Who raised you?”

“My grandparents until they… died. After that I raised myself.”

“What about your clan?”

“There’s Cat and Cherish but they’re in the same book as me pretty much. Cat was raised by a human mother and Cherish… she doesn’t talk about what happened to her family.”

“Hmm… so you guys have no idea of your full powers?”

“Cat’s really good at witchcraft and Cherish talks to the dead.”

“I mean the powers all vampires have: strength, mind control, stuff like that.”

“I can control minds… to an extent. And I know we’re strong.”

“Any vampire can jump that. It’d be easy.” Rowan frowned looking at the window in concentration. Kalena spoke again a little concerned. “You don’t have to try now. It’d probably be best if you didn’t.”

“… You’re probably right. We could go out that door.”

Kalena smirked. She had noticed the door as well. “We could.” With that she climbed up the wall using the worn bricks as leverage. Rowan watched her before shaking her head lightly and going out the front door meeting the hunter around the back just in time to help her up.

“Show off,” Rowan commented lightly.

“You’re not at all what I was always told a vampire was.”

“Are my friends?”

“Garret comes close.”

Rowan smiled shaking her head. “You just don’t like him. How long have you hunted?”

“Since I was seventeen, when my aunt and uncle were killed.”

“What happened?”

“Guess.”

“But why?”

“I don’t know. My mere presence seems to just attract leeches- no offence- and make them want to kill me.”

“Well, I for one have no desire to kill you.”

Kalena smirked sitting down leaning against the building. “Thanks. I’m glad to hear that.”

Rowan sat next to her. “Neither do my friends.”

“Garret?”

“He just doesn’t trust you.”

“Why do you? I hate vampires.”

“And yet you’re helping me learn to fight. Doesn’t seem like a very hate-like thing to do.”

“I know, believe me, I’m wondering about my sanity.”

Rowan laughed. “Face it, you’ve never gotten to know a vampire before so you’ve never realized that some of us are as human inside as you are.”

“Maybe. But I still don’t like you guys.”

“Not yet. Let’s get back before Garret realizes that I’m with you and sends out a search party.”

“Are you going to tell him?”

“God, no! Can you imagine telling Mr. Overprotective that I’m sparring with a vampire hunter? He’d flip. Then want to train me himself. That would be a complete disaster.”

“Why?”

“Garret already treats me with kid gloves. I’d learn nothing from him.”

“He is sort of an alpha male.”

Rowan laughed. “Garret invented the alpha male. But it’s who he is, and I’ve accepted that. Just as he’s going to learn to accept that I’m not an invalid.”

“And how are you going to get him to realize this?”

“Learn to fight and kick his ass.”

Kalena’s laughter rang out, happy and carefree. She didn’t know the last time she had had so much fun as she had with the female vampire. Every time she hung out with Rowan she completely forgot that the other girl was a vampire. She was starting to wonder if perhaps she had been mistaken. Yes, there were vampires that were completely evil but having gotten to know this group she was starting to realize that perhaps they weren’t all like that.

“So, can we do this three times a week?” Rowan asked.

“Sounds good,” Kalena nodded. “It won’t interfere with your insane scheduling?”

“You’ve been talking to Cat haven’t you? I can do four things at once. No problem. I’m just doing the band, double majors, training with you, and trying to have a relationship. I’ll be fine.”

“You’re jinxing yourself. You know that don’t you?”

“Yeah…”

“We really should get up and get back to the others.”

“I know, it’s just such a nice day.”

“It’s like thirty degrees out. How is that nice?”

“Human.”

“Vampire.” The two girls smiled and began the trek back to the dorms.
