They talked and joked on their way to her house, making the walk feel entirely too short for Beth. She found him witty and entertaining, and didn’t remember when she’d met someone her age that she found this interesting.
All to soon they’d arrived at her doorstep, now was the moment of awkwardness that Beth dreaded. She couldn’t invite him in although her aunt probably would never find out if she did, but she didn’t really want him to leave either.
“Well, this is it.” Beth gestured towards the house smiling shyly. “It doesn’t look like much but, it’s home. Well… thanks for walking me home.”
“You’re welcome.” He replied. There was no sign of life inside the house, he didn’t like what he was feeling in the air tonight. “Don’t you have family waiting up for you?”
“I… uh.. my aunt…” Suddenly nervous Beth was torn between telling him the truth and bluffing but for some reason she trusted him. “My aunt will be home later… tomorrow.”
“Well, be sure to lock up.” He turned to leave. “Good night Beth.”
“Good night...” Beth turned to go into the house, when something occurred to her, she turned around quickly. “Hey wait! I don’t even know your name!” She stared in disbelief; he was already gone. How does he do that?
Beth went into the house wondering how she’d managed to get a date with a guy when she didn’t even know his name. She locked the door then ran up the stairs to her room; she logged into her IM account to chat with Sarah, Liv and Morgan. She told them all about what had happened and about their upcoming date; it was close to one o’clock before she logged off and went to bed.
Across town, Sebastian barged into Jonathan’s office despite his guard dog of a receptionist’s protests. She was apologizing effusively from the doorway when Sebastian turned to her and very deliberately shut the door in the woman’s face.
His face was a mix of fury and concern when he turned back to face Jonathan, he strode angrily across the large office slapping his hands onto the desk and glared at him across the mahogany desk.
“Problems Bastian?” Jonathan eyebrow winged up to disappear into his raven wing locks that framed his face. He leaned back in his chair lacing his fingers together at the back of his head.
“The little human you have under your protection?” Sebastian leaned forward to look Jonathan the eyes. “Well they almost got her tonight! What are you going to do about it?”
"What would you have me do?" Jonathan eyes narrowed ever so slightly over Sebastian’s announcement. “I already have two of my best men on her.”
“Good lord! ” Sebastian exploded bolting upright. “If they’re the best we have; we’re in deep shit! If I hadn’t been there, you’d be hearing about her gruesome dismemberment on the news channel in tomorrow!”
“Are you sure they weren’t around and just out of communication?” Jon watched Sebastian pacing the room. “Sit down Bastian, you’re giving me a headache!”
“You know, she means as much to me as she does you!” Sebastian dropped into a chair but held his body like a tightly coiled spring. “I’ve watched her grow from a pigtailed little thing with missing teeth into the young woman she is now. And that woman she lives with doesn’t have the right to call herself family!”
“What do you mean?” Jonathan asked tightly. This was news to him, he’d always been under the impression that the child had a good loving family unit. There were serious holes in his network of informants, over the past eighteen years or so they’d reached dangerous proportions. It was past time to clean the ranks, and reaffirm loyalties.
“The woman is never home and she’s a raving alcoholic at best.” Sebastian studied Jon’s reaction. He really didn’t know? “She’s not fit to care for a rock much less a child.”
“She’s hardly a child anymore Bastian.” Jon picked up the wineglass on his desk and brought it to his pale lips when he brought it away a crimson droplet ran down one side of his mouth. His tongue flicked out to draw it back into his mouth. “Shadoe can take the dayshift and you the nightshift. Assign your duties to whomever you like.”
“Shadoe? Really?!” Sebastian smiled slowly. “That’s excellent!”
“I’m so very glad you approve Bastian.” Jon played with the stem of the glass studying the red liquid swirling in its depths. “So where is the girl now? I assume you wouldn’t be here if she wasn’t safely tucked away for the night.”
“Of course not!” Sebastian agreed. “When I left she was just going to bed, she spent quite a lot of time on her computer. Apparently girls talk as much online as they do in person.”
“Have a drink with me and tell me about this Aunt of hers.” Jon pushed a glowing button and spoke into the intercom. “Bring Bastian a glass and send two men to find out what happened to Yuri and Vitali.”
“Yuri and Vitali?!” Those two WERE some of the best men Jon had in his ranks; they would never shirk their duties. Something powerful had been lurking in the darkness with him… but why would they send such a powerful creature after a slight teenaged girl?
“Who else? I believe I did mention two of my best men, Bastian." Jonathan took another drink from his wineglass before continuing. "At any rate, what do you know about the Aunt?”
Very good points Bastian! I believe we may have traitors in our midst. For the time being, keep this between Shadoe and us.
