Chapter 5
Grown-Up Christmas List
“Where is that girl?” Elizabeth asked Michelle. She shrugged in answer.
“Well, after she hurt me, I think she went upstairs to her room. Her door is locked, but there's no sound coming from inside. Should I make Kyle open it?”
“No,” she sighed, “the door is too pretty to ruin. We'll just wait until she shows up to talk about this.” Michelle rolled her eyes.
“Fine, mom, we'll do it your way. No doubt Darling's out there smiling because she hasn't gotten into trouble yet.” Elizabeth patted Michelle's hand gently.
“Don't worry, sweetie. She'll get what's coming to her. That's the way the universe works.”
“I know, mom.” Michelle smiled. The two women looked up from the couch as Jereme walked in.
“Hello, dear, have you seen Samantha?” he shook his head.
“No, mom, I haven't seen her since Megan and I arrived yesterday.” she sighed and nodded, as if suspecting that to be his answer.
“Yes, it seems that she's just disappeared for now.” she pushed herself off the couch, saying, “I think I'm going to go upstairs and see if Thomas needs anything. The trip up here really wore him out.” Michelle and Jeremy just nodded, watching as their mother glided out of the living room.
“Why do you have to lie to get attention?” Michelle glared at her brother.
“I'd hold my tongue if I were you. And I'm not lying! That brat did hurt my hand!”
“Before or after you hit her?” Michelle spluttered angrily.
“I did not hit her!”
“Yes, you did. Megan was there. She told me the whole thing. You hit her.”
“I did no such thing. She was being an insolent, snobby, little-”
“You mean she wasn't playing House with you how you wanted to plant. You know, I had you had out-grown hitting her, but I guess I was wrong.” Jeremy turned and left the room, Michelle following indignantly.
“I did not hit her. That little snot got what she deserved.”
“Sure. She deserved to get hit by you. Right.” he replied dryly. He slipped through the kitchen, gracefully sliding his snow boots on and breezing through the back door.
“Just where the hell do you think you're going?” Michelle screamed after him, her voice echoing back to her. He didn't reply and effortlessly flowed between the trees, quickly concealing himself in the snowy woods.
