Chapter Seventeen

Flashback, a year later

Time sped by Garret managed to graduate from high school. The night he graduated he and Ayden went out to a club to celebrate. “Her,” Ayden stated looking a head to a curvy blond sitting with a young man.

“She has a boyfriend,” Garret pointed out.

“Your point?”

“They’re engaged.”

“Your point?”

“Fine, go for it.”

“I’ll be have her leaving here with me in ten minutes.”

“Twenty bucks if you don’t use your powers.”

“You suck.”

“You wish. Twenty.”

“Thirty.”

“Fine. No powers.”

“Five minutes.” Ayden walked away. Garret carefully monitored Ayden to make sure his friend played fair. Four minutes later the girl snuck away from her fiancé when he went to the bathroom and out the back with Ayden.

“Showoff,” he snorted. He influenced the bar tender into letting him buy a bottle of scotch.

“This seat taken?” a woman asked.

“Not any more,” he said jovially. The woman slid into the seat before me.

Present day

“I’ll never forget the way she looked,” Garret admitted. “She was wearing a black tank-top and a skirt so short it’s probably illegal in some states. She was also wearing what was obviously a wig. It was black but her eyebrows were auburn. Her eyes were an ordinary blue. There was nothing special about her.”

“If you’re going to keep telling me about old girlfriends I am going to get mad,” Rowan warned.

“Trust me, baby, she was not an old girlfriend.”

Flashback

“Do you dance?” she asked.

“Not often,” Garret shrugged

“Will you make an exception?”

“What’s your name?” She started, as though she hadn’t been expecting that question. Her hesitation meant one of two things. Either she was unsure about whether or not to give it out or she had to make one up.

“Shelly.”

“Right, Shelly, well, my name’s Garret.” He extended a hand and we walked out onto the dance floor. As they danced he attempted a mind probe. The only thing that he could find was an image of the two of us intertwined on a big king-sized bed.

“Would you like to leave?” she asked bluntly.

A small coughing laugh escaped Garret at her boldness. “You don’t waist any time do you?”

“Why should I?” she asked.

“Good point.” They walked out to the alley and she attacked him covering his mouth with hers and pulling, one-handed at his clothing. He opened his eyes and pulled away from her lips. “If you value your life drop that. Right now.”

“If I don’t?”

“That’s simple. I’ll kill you.”

“You don’t have the guts. Anyone could walk by.”

Garret laughed darkly. “Try me.” Her grip only tightened on the stake she held at his back. He moved quickly, backslapping her. She fell but was on her feet in seconds and attacking him again. “Little kids should know better than to play with sharp sticks.”

“This will be your last night on Earth, leach.”

“It’s cute that you think that.” She grabbed for her other stake only to find it gone. Smirking he held it up. “Now, what would be the most ironic? Draining you or killing to with your own stake?”

“Do whatever you want. The others will avenge me.”

“Others? Interesting.” She flinched showing the first sign of real emotion. He leaned over her neck, his mouth finding her pulse. She tensed, but didn’t fight. “Tell them to leave.”

“What?”

“The people sneaking up behind me. Tell them to leave.”

“No.”

“Then I snap your neck right now.” She didn’t respond. “This will be your final mistake, hunter.” He grabbed her and jumped landing on the fire escape above. He then bit down.

Present day

“I drained her,” Garret finished.

Rowan was silent for a few seconds letting that sink in. “It was self-defense,” she said hesitantly.

He laughed bitterly. “It was the beginning. Killing is an addiction, as Gage told me, did you know that? Not as bad as humans with alcohol or drugs but it is an addiction, and two kill can make you hooked. There’s just so much power in it. I killed five people. Okay, technically, I didn’t kill all five of them but I was directly involved in their deaths, three of them were Predators.”

“Why’d you stop?”

“Elise.”

Flashback, a year and a half later

Garret was walking down the alley when he heard Elise scream. He ran towards the sound and found his surrogate little sister being fed from by Ayden. With a low growl he pried her away and held her in his arms.

“Garret, what the hell?” Ayden asked. Garret knew that he couldn’t stay there, what would happen to both of them if he tried to help her without leaving. Cradling Elise he ran straight to the hospital. They took her almost immediately.

“She’s going to be okay,” the doctor announced a couple hours later. “You’re lucky though, your sister was pretty bad off. Did you get a hold of your parents?”

“They weren’t home,” he lied. “I had to leave a message on the machine.”
“Would you like to sit with her?”

“If I could.” he walked into Elise’s room.

“Garret!” Elise smiled.

“Hey, kid,” he said forcing a smile.

“Looks like I owe you another one.”

“Trust me, you don’t.”

“But... you saved me.”

“If it weren’t for him none of this would have happened. I’m so sorry, Elise... I must have led them to you.”

“You know them.”

“I live with them.”

Elise frowned. “I don’t understand. Why would you do that? Live with people who would hurt others. That’s not who you are.”

“It’s been years. What would you know about who I am?”

“I don’t know about who you are now, you’re right. But I do know who you aren’t. You would never hurt me.”

Guilt washed over him. “You’re right, kiddo. You’re special. I could never hurt you.”

“What’s happened to you, Gar?”

“It’s been a long couple of years.”

“What could have happened to make you so cold and hard?”

“Life,” was his simple response.

“Bullshit,” was hers. “You had a hard life but life didn’t do this to you. I knew you through the worst of it, you were different then, kinder. You did this to yourself.”

He snorted derisively. “What do you know, human?”

“Apparently more than you, vampire.”
