Chapter 6
“Well, that’s the end of it,” Jae said as she carried the last box down the stairs and set it next to the others.
“Thank God, girl you had so many clothes that didn’t even fit you anymore,” Chase replied as he sat on the couch.
“I know, I’ve been so busy and I didn’t really care what I had and didn’t have. Most the stuff that didn’t fit me I wore around the apartment or when I went to my daddy’s and helped him outside.”
“Where’s your father live?”
“Oh, out in the country on a little farm.”
“A country girl.”
“No, we didn’t always live out there, only after momma died and daddy found out that she had a trust fund set up for everyone with money she got from her parents. She never said a word about it.”
“That must have been nice to find out about.”
“Hmm . . . yes, it helped us out a lot with the funeral expenses and everything else.”
“My family never had to worry about that, we always had money.”
“Must have been nice.”
“Sure, we got everything we ever wanted, it was great.” He stated with a hint of sarcasm
Jae was silently for a moment then said, “So . . . now I need to go shopping, right?”
“Right. We can go next weekend and I can bring my sister along to help.”
“That would be great. I have three months before my friends wedding, and I want to look good. Maybe I should set up an appointment at the salon to do something with my hair.”
“You’re going to cut it?!”
“Maybe a couple inches.”
“Why? It looks good like this.”
“Well, I can only do so much with it myself. It’s hard to do more than braid it sometimes so I need it a little shorter, like to the middle of my back or something. It won’t be easier but at least I might be able to do more myself. Plus it will probably look healthier if I cut it.”
“Oh, okay. What else do you want to do?”
“ I don’t know maybe add some more highlights, maybe feather it in front so it frames my face, that would look cute, wouldn’t it?”
“Yea”
“See, you’re a lot of help.”
“I know.”
“Well, I suppose I should get to bed, I have work in the morning and all of that.”
“Okay. I’ll leave you a note about Saturday and if anything changes let me know.”
“Okay I will.” Jae got up and walked with Chase to the door, “thanks again Chase, I really appreciate you helping me with this.”
“No problem, Jae.” Chase replied as Jae opened the door to let him out.
Jae stood near the door as Chase walked through. He turned and looked at her and couldn’t resist. He leaned close and just looked at her, their lips a breath away, “I’m going to kiss you, okay?” He said right before his lips crushed down on hers.
She couldn’t protest, she knew she had wondered about it all afternoon while they went through all her clothes. It was heaven. He teased her lips with his own then slid his tongue over before it dipped inside to taste. Jae thought fireworks were going off as she moved closer and put her arms around his neck. She sighed softly as the kiss deepened.
As soon as it started, Chase pulled away. Dazed Jae opened her eyes to look at him. She saw . . . desire, or maybe something else, she wasn’t sure exactly but his soft gray eyes had gone stormy. It was amazing; she never knew eyes could change colors like that. She took a deep breath and stepped back, it seemed like the right thing to do. Chase stared at her as she took another step back and closed the door in his face.
Jae went to work with a small smile on her face; she was ready to face whatever would happen today. She stayed awake for an hour after she had closed the door in Chase’s face, wondering if she did the right thing. She thought she did, well maybe not exactly the right thing, but she really didn’t think he wanted her that way. It was a pleasant kiss, though. Who was she kidding, it was amazing, knocked her socks right off.
However, she should not dwell on it, it happened end of story. God, he was gorgeous she thought as she got into the elevator. What was she going to do? Maybe she should cancel Saturday? No, that wouldn’t be right; he would think that it meant something to her and that she was avoiding him. Which she had to admit, she kind of was, before she left the apartment she peaked out of the peep hole to make sure his door was closed. Silly, it was, she could admit that to herself, but she wasn’t quiet ready to face him this morning, maybe this afternoon after work.
Jae got off the elevator on the 10th floor and made her way to her desk. As she got closer she noticed flowers on it. Must be a mistake she thought as she put her purse in the bottom drawer, they did smell good though. Jae reached for the card to see who it was to:
Jae,
I had fun last night. Maybe, we can
have dinner tonight, my place 7pm.
-Chase
Oh dear lord, it was from Chase, how did he know were she worked? Mrs. Fischer! She should have known them working together alone in the kitchen was a bad idea. She didn’t have to go to dinner, if she didn’t want to. Besides, Chase didn’t seem like the type of guy that was looking for marriage or settling down, at least not with a girl like her.
Whenever they talked he would mention the fact that he came from money, maybe he didn’t even have a job and just did nothing all day long. Maybe he was a crazy man and beat women. Lord, she was getting so far ahead of herself. She liked him though, so that made it worse. If only he was ugly and short. But he wasn’t, so she was at a loss as to what to do, maybe if she just went to dinner and acted like nothing had happened then leave without any expectations. Yes, she could do that, Jae decided as she got down to business with her job.
She settled in front of the computer and started loading the programs she would need for the day. Then got started on all the letters she needed to type up from Friday, while she thought of all the reasons she should avoid Chase until Saturday. Not that she would be able to do it, since he does live across the hall. But maybe, she could, just slip in when he isn’t around, then not answer her door like she isn’t home.
She wasn’t even sure she liked the guy, she thought, she didn’t even know him. The only thing she really knew was he came from money, had a sister, and was good looking; well and that he was a good kisser. And Lord was he good at that. After that she didn’t know anything. Well she had meet 3 of his friends, if in fact they were his friends and not just movers. Maybe they were family too, who knew.
Jae continued on with her work as the thoughts came and went through her head. She just had to make it through the week and everything else and go from there. She decided that she would go home and leave him a message that she couldn’t do dinner and leave it at that.
