Chapter 6

Okay, guys and gals, I am honestly trying my damnedest to get back into my writing like I used to, but given my college major, it takes up a lot of my time. I'm also involved in various things which take up my time as well. Please bear with me, forgive me for my constant lateness, and I beg you to stay with me cause there is no way I'm gonna stop writing on AFF.

A/N: This chapter isn't as long--like a page shorter than my normal length--but it's something.

To my reviewers:
Thank you so much!

Chapter 6

It was the next day, and as promised, Enchantress Davina had Kekoa’s potion ready and waiting on him. Offering the young merman one final warning about drinking what was inside, she wished him goodluck and a “Don’t die, merbwoy” and he was on his way back home.

Kekoa sat in his room on the bed, the palm-sized dark blue bottle rested in his hand. He had been back from Davina’s for hours now but he still hadn’t found the nerve to drink it. The simplest reason was because he was scared. He was positive in where his heart lied—it was with Akoni. And he was pretty sure Akoni was the same way. But do you risk possibly dying in three days based on assumption? What if I do this and Akoni really doesn’t love me. What if I do this and he’s upset when he finds out. Perhaps he likes me this way and wouldn’t want me to have legs…..Do I really want to do this, cause if I get this wrong, I’m dead and what would my parents think about that? Kekoa closed his lavender eyes and memories of the past few months floated through his mind. He recalled the awed expression Akoni had when he first laid eyes on him that day he saved him from drowning. He remembered heavy flutters that filled his chest when he saw the land dweller face to face. Love grew in his heart immediately. He saw all the times they shared together at the rocks—the conversations, the touches, the kisses…Oh! The kisses! Akoni’s lips were physically heaven on earth. Two pillows as soft as clouds, and tasting oh so sweet. Kekoa opened his eyes and smiled; he was taking the potion.

Opening the bottle, he pressed it to his lips and drank. It was a bit on the thick side, but was relatively tasteless. He remained sitting on his bed, waiting for the potion to take it’s effect. That’s when his father and brother swam in. “You went to go get that potion, didn’t you? To have legs?” Manu asked, his voice level, but his eyes looked worried.

Kekoa looked at his brother, knowing he was the only one who knew about this to tell their parents. Ilani shrugged. “Yes.”

“And did you take it?”

He nodded. Suddenly, a strange feeling came over his stomach and Kekoa grabbed it……then hiccupped. Three air bubbles escaped.

It’s happening. Ilani thought. “MOM!”

***

“Mama, I can’t breathe.” Jo-jo said as he tried to squirm his way out the super tight embrace. When she finally let go, he sat down on a neighboring chair and took a gasp of air and watched as his mother drew her attention to his older brother, grabbing his face and kissing his cheek over and over.

“Mama, mama, would you cut it out please?!” Akoni begged. He always hated when she did that, but it could’ve been worse, she could’ve done it in front of guests…………like she’s done before.

Makoka pulled away. “Are you sure you two will be okay?” She asked her sons as she and her husband, Akamu, stood at the front door, two bags of luggage at their feet.

Akoni rolled his eyes. I’m 21 for goodness sakes, and mama still asks that question? “We’ll be fine, mama, geez.”

“Okay. I just want to be sure, cause if you’re not, we can cancel the trip…”

That’s when Akamu interjected. “Actually, no, we can’t. The trip to Maui is non-refundable. We gotta go, ipo.”

Akoni nodded. “Yes, go and have a good time. It’s your 23rd anniversary and you guys deserve these five days to yourselves.”

His mother nodded, reluctantly. “Alright, alright. We’re going………….but are you sure—“

Jo-jo sighed. “Mama!”

Akamu grabbed his wife by her hand and escorted her out the door. “We’re leaving. You two behave yourselves and watch out for each other.”

“Okay.” The two boys said simultaneously as they waved goodbye to their parents. Shutting the door behind him, Akoni sighed in relief. “Finally. I was starting to think we wouldn’t be able to get mama out the house.”

“Ain’t that the truth. She’s spent way too much time in this house. If anyone needs a vacation, it’s her.” Jo-jo got up from his chair and walked into the kitchen to get himself something to eat. Makoka had fixed a very big helping of Hawaiian ham casserole last night that would last them for days. Jo-jo looked in the refrigerator and pulled out the large pan, setting it on the kitchen counter. Grabbing a plate, he scooped out a portion for himself and was just about to place it in the microwave when he looked out the kitchen window. “Whoa! Akoni, come look!”

Akoni walked into the kitchen. “What is it?”

“There’s a drunk lolo buggah walking the beach. And he’s naked! Haha, look at him, brah, he’s staggering and everything!”

Curious about the scene Jo-jo was talking about, he walked behind his brother, looked over his shoulder, and out the window. Sure enough, there was someone on the shoreline stumbling so badly, you’d have thought they had drank 15 beers within the hour. Akoni squinted trying to figure out who it was, cause even though the guy was drunk, they hardly had people stumble upon their side of the beach. Then somehow seeing the black mane of curly hair atop his head made everything clear………….well sort of clear. “Oh shit! It’s Kekoa!”

“What? You mean, Kekoa, the mermaid? How’d he get legs?!”

“I don’t know.” Akoni ran to the back door, opening it quickly. “Grab a blanket and come on.” Running out the house, Akoni sprinted to the young man, who had moments earlier collapsed on the sand unconscious.

Kneeling down next to the body, Akoni kept staring at Kekoa’s new limbs. “How the hell did you get legs?” He murmured outloud. “What happened to you?”

“I got it!” Jo-jo yelled as he came running to where his brother was. He slowed up, staring at the sight before him. “Okay. This is getting really creepy. Kekoa is supposed to be a fi—“ Akoni glared at him. “…ah um merman. Now he’s got legs? I don’t get it. Can they do that?”

“Apparently they can.” Akoni leaned his head down to Kekoa’s chest. “Good, he’s still breathing. Help me wrap the blanket around him.”

Jo-jo stepped back, shaking his head. “Oh no…” hinting at Kekoa’s current nakedness.

“Just shut up and do it. I’ll lift him up, you wrap it around his waist.”

After a few minutes of continuous pushing by Akoni, Jo-jo finally agreed and together they got the blanket around the nude waist. Akoni then lifted the unconscious Kekoa bridal-style into his arms and they walked back inside the house.

***

“Uuuuurrrrrrggghhhh….”

“Hey brah, he’s waking up!”

Akoni came out from the kitchen with a cool rag in his hand and walked into the livingroom towards the couch Kekoa was lying on. Sitting himself on the coffee table next to it, he dabbed the cloth on the slightly pale face. “Kekoa? You okay?”

Blinking a few times slowly, Kekoa opened his lavender eyes and weakly looked into Akoni’s brown ones. “Did it work?” He murmured.

Akoni chuckled. “If you’re talking about these pair of legs you’ve grown, yeah it worked.”

Smiling, the now young man tried to sit up with Akoni’s help. “How are you feeling?”

“Okay. Woozy. A bit tired.”

“I’ll take you upstairs then. You can share Jo-jo’s room since he has bunk beds…”

Jo-jo’s mouth dropped open. “What?!”

Akoni turned to his brother. “You heard me.”

“But he’s your guest! He probably wants to sleep with you anyway!”

Turning back to Kekoa he glanced at him and saw he was looking straight at him. A blank, yet slightly hopeful look was in his eyes. The thought of Kekoa sleeping in his bed did peak his interests greatly, but he knew it wouldn’t be a good idea. Somehow he’s figured out that he can never control himself around Kekoa. It was something about the mermaid that made him want to touch him, kiss him, and hold him forever. Sleeping in the same bed as Kekoa would lead to things the lavender eyed beauty wouldn’t know how to handle and Akoni didn’t want that. They couldn’t sleep together.

“He needs his own bed, Jo-jo, and you’re the only one who has an extra…” Akoni turned his head when he noticed Kekoa’s head drop slightly.

“Okay, okay.”

“Good.” Akoni stood up. “Come on, Kekoa, I’ll show you your bed.” He started walking towards the stairs but stopped when he heard a thud then his brother speak.

“Um, Akoni, you might want to come back.”

Frowning, Akoni turned back and saw Kekoa stretched out on the floor. “Oh! Sorry, I forgot the whole ‘Can’t walk yet’ thing.” He walked back and picked Kekoa up. “After you rest for a bit, we’re gonna have to work on getting you standing upright.”

Wrapping his arms around the strong neck, Kekoa smiled. “Okay.”

Catching his brother covering a chuckle with his hand, Akoni cleared his throat and proceeded to carry Kekoa upstairs and into Jo-jo’s bedroom. After loaning him his own t-shirt and a pair of shorts to put on, Akoni left him to rest.

***

Two hours later, after eating, resting, and a spontaneous phone call from Peka, Akoni returned to Jo-jo’s room. Jo-jo was sitting on his bed, playing another videogame and Kekoa was sitting up in the other bed watching. He was totally baffled at what he was seeing. Fake figures jumping around in a big black box? And that thing Jo-jo was holding was making it all happen? What a concept.

“Hey, you awake?” Akoni asked. Kekoa nodded. “Well, how about it—you ready to walk?”

“Yeah.” Akoni took Kekoa down the stairs and into the living room where they could have more room. He set him down on his feet but held him close to his body so he could gain his balance. Akoni could feel the slight tremble coming from Kekoa’s legs, trying to find his footing.

“You okay?”

“Yeah, I’m okay.”

“Good, cause we’re gonna start taking some steps. Hold on to me.”

Kekoa tightened his arms around the larger, stronger body. “I have no problem with that.”

Akoni laughed nervously. “Um, okay, here we go.”

***

“Not bad, Kekoa. Not bad at all.” Akoni said as he walked back to the livingroom, carrying two glasses of soda. Keeping one for himself, he handed the other to the mermaid. He watched as Kekoa eyed the dark drink then tilted the glass to taste it. His face scrunched up and Akoni laughed.

“What is this?” Kekoa asked, smacking his lips suspiciously.

“It’s called soda. That one in particular is Pepsi. What do you think about it?”

“It tastes really sweet……and it burns my throat. How do you drink this stuff?”

Akoni laughed. “I honestly don’t know. I think it’s the caffeine. Caffeine can be addicting. I’ll get you some juice instead then. But, you’ve got to earn it first.”

“What do you mean?”

Akoni stepped back a few paces and stood. “You have to walk to me.”

Kekoa’s eyes bucked out. “What? By myself?”

“Yes, by yourself. You can do it. You’ve got to build your coordination and balance, and in order to do that, you’ve got to walk around without any support.”

Kekoa put his glass down on the coffee table and started to walk. Moving slowly, step by wobbly step, Kekoa came to stand right before Akoni, a big triumphant smile on his face. Akoni smiled back. “You see, at this rate, you’ll be sprinting by tomorrow.”

Kekoa kissed him. “Thank you for helping me.”

Akoni was taken by the feel of Kekoa’s lips against his. Always had been. Unconsciously, he ran a hand across the merman’s cheek and watched as Kekoa caressed his hand with his own. Gradually, they both leaned back in for another kiss—this time it carried more passion and a few flicks of Akoni’s tongue. Kekoa moaned and pressed himself further against the stronger body…….but Akoni pulled back.

I can’t do this. I CAN’T do this.

“What’s the matter?” Kekoa asked, a confused look on his face.

“Um, ah, n-nothing. Nothing. Um, what-what happened to you? How’d you get legs?”

“I took a potion. I got it from an enchantress.”

“Is it permanent?”

Kekoa shrugged. “It can be. It depends.”

“Depends on what?”

He reached both his hands up to place them on Akoni’s chest. “On you. I love you.”

Akoni blinked. “You…..love me?”

The young merman smiled, nodding. “I’ve never felt this way about anyone before. I think about you all the time…” He hugged his neck tightly and whispered, “I want us to be together, Akoni.”

Akoni wrapped one arm around Kekoa’s slender body and he swallowed hard. Nervous thoughts passed behind his eyes like shadows. He loves me? He changed himself because he loves me and wants to be with me? I care for Kekoa…..I really do, but this will cause a problem. Peka will be home in a matter of days and how will I ever explain a merman-turned-human is hanging by my shirt tails because he’s in love with me? But should I really care what he thinks? It’s not like Peka and I are in love……right? What have I gotten myself into?
