Egypt: the rebirth of Yaminah
Soon after my witness of the foreign visitors I was swallowed up by fate. I recall that it was during the night. I had finished my chores and had settled into bed. The past few nights Id gone to sleep guessing at the contents of the mysterious box and it was in this innocent contemplation that I was seized suddenly from near slumber and carried off into the night. I had heard tales of the Jewish families being made to give up their daughters and sons into the Pharaohs service but I never dreamed it could happen to me. When I was flung down on a satin pillow somewhere deep within the palace reality caught up with me. The room was smoky and dark and I was afraid.
“Where am I?” I called out. “Is anyone here? Where is my family?” These questions went unanswered and the sound of my voice echoing off the walls only chilled me further. Suddenly I became aware of a tinkling sound, like the smallest and most delicate of bells. I rose from the pillow and moved cautiously in the direction of the ringing. From the mist all around me women began to emerge. That they were women was all that was familiar about them. Upon closer inspection I could see that they were like no other women Id ever known.
Their hair colors were varied, ranging from coal black, to golden yellow and every shade in between, all glossy and shining. Their glassy eyes were ringed in black, their lips moist and rosy, and their faces seemed made of the finest porcelain. Filmy gold cloth draped around their well-muscled bodies like a magic curtain that revealed and yet cloaked. They were the most gorgeous creatures I had ever beheld. These silken skinned goddesses gathered around me and seemed to be studying me as intently as I had them. They whispered to each other and their voices wound about me like a song.
I was gathered up and taken to a place where luxury was the order of the day. I was forced to endure warm perfumed baths with rose petals floating about me. I leaned back in the steaming water as these gentle nymphs washed and combed my hair until shone as brightly as their own. I was dressed in a soft blue robe interwoven with gold. They decked my fingers with jeweled rings, draped necklaces about my neck, and placed bracelets about my wrists until I jingled with every movement.
Finally when they were satisfied I was brought to the most elaborate chamber yet and made to lie down on a giant bed. It was like sinking into a cloud, I closed my eyes, sighed, and arched my back in pleasure. When I opened my eyes I was once again surrounded by these beautiful women who leaned down to softly kiss me. Their lips were warm and their mouths tasted of honey and rare spices. Their shapely hands caressed me everywhere and I feared I should die from the pleasure of it. Then I felt the hands draw back and the women scattered back into the shadows as if in fear.
A figure stood in the doorway, a woman. Yet this woman was far more alluring than the others, a diamond among pearls. Her eyes were like twinkling sapphires and her inky hair was wound serpentine around her head, held into place by a golden crown. It was none other then Pharaoh herself. She spoke, her voice rich and resonant, it plucked the strings of my heart subduing me with a love like Id never known. “Yaminah my darling, come here to me. Let me kiss you.” In that instant I ceased to be Levana and became Yaminah. My past was erased and the furutre opened its arms to receive me.I rushed over to her and dropped to my knees at her feet. I kissed them. I was no longer thinking of my family, nor the crimson box. Blinded momentarily by the glory of Pharaoh I forgot myself completely.
