First Purchase

hello.... again... new chapter! new character! yay! review! please?

Behind her, Camion had noticed the change in her. He chased after her and caught her about the waist before she darted through the stalls.

“Now, now, where are you going?” he said and drew her tight to his chest. She wasn’t sure what she would have said, because as she turned to face him she caught sight of a familiar black- haired head.

Kateri was standing calmly in front of a booth. A man was at the auction podium, currently describing the attributes of a naked young man behind him being held by two guards. He looked embarrassed, trying to hide himself behind his bound hands. Unruly brown hair framed a round face. He looked honestly embarrassed and was still squirming to cover himself. A wide, pouting mouth was pursed tight, as if he wanted to scream in protest, but wisely was keeping his mouth shut.

One of the guards shifted their grip on him, and even from their distance, both Camion and Jess noticed the bruises on his arms. Her eyes traced the rest of him, noting the other bruises, mostly faded. They had probably stopped beating him a few days before the auction so he would sell for more, but his undernourished body hadn’t recovered as quickly.

Jess stepped forward, out of Camion’s embrace, and as she neared Kateri and the auction booth, the bidding for the young man began. The price was high, surprisingly, at 9,000 Imperials. The man froze, his attempts stalled in the shock of hearing a price applied to him. Jess remembered the sensation. Hearing that someone had put an amount on you. He stood stock still and listened as the bidding went on. Jess pushed her way forward and found Kateri, eyes raised upward, watching the proceedings with tired amusement.

“Kateri, mistress, are you going to bid on him?” Jess asked, not aware of what she was saying until it hung in the air between her and her mistress.

“A minute,” was Kateri’s reply. She didn’t turn toward jess, but she extended and arm and drew Jess into a soft, protective circle of her body. Jess waited, tension singing through her body as she watched, stiff in Kateri’s relaxed arms. She wanted Kateri to buy him, she wanted him to be safe. She didn’t know why, but in that second when he froze, she connected to him. She knew what he was feeling, and she wanted him safe.

The price was at 10,750, now, and there were mainly two bidders. One was a tall, lean man with a predatory look in his eyes. The other was a portly woman already surrounded by half a dozen strapping young men, eye candy.

When the price hit 11,000 even, Kateri raised her hand and voice.

“15,000.”

Both bidders and the crowd turned, a few gasping. The recognition was instant. Few had spotted her as she stood among the crowd, but now that she had spoken, they bowed or moved out of her way to the stage. The man on stage was openly gaping at her, as was the auctioneer. The guards alone stood unfazed, save for a tightening of their hands on his arms when he slumped slackly in their arms from surprise.

Jess turned to look up at Kateri, and found her mistress smiling. She gave Jess a peck on the check before walking towards the front booth. The auctioneer stuttered slightly as the next slave was dragged forward. Jess watched Kateri sign the paperwork to release the man to her ownership and sign a waiver for them to receive payment from the treasury.

The man had been dragged off stage by the guards, still surprised by the price he was bought for, still comprehending that he had been bought and sold. She watched how he looked at Kateri, his gaze open and unappraising, soaking in the image of the woman who bought him. The auctioneer called out a price loudly, and Jess was surprised to see something in the man's eyes snap.
