the friends
A few months had passed since I had entered high school and life was going on without a hitch. I claimed to be Josh’s younger sister who was 17 years old and had been smart enough to skip one grade a be a senior instead of the junior I supposedly was supposed to be. I said that I didn’t have my license because I was afraid of driving after getting into a car crash with a friend at my old school, a half lie since I really was in a car crash, and I didn’t drink, smoke or do drugs because I had to keep in shape for cheerleading.
I had made a couple of close friends outside of the squad.
Tristan Jacobs was a sweet boy who I went out with for a while and then realized we were way better off as friends. At 5 feet 11 inches his blond hair and baby blue eyes gave him the classic cutie pie look. And damn he smelled good but he was more like a second older brother to me than an actual boyfriend. He was the captain of the lacrosse team and currently going out with Jill Peterson. She was one of the alternates on the squad; a very petit girl who you would swear would break in heavy wind. They got together right after Tristan and I broke up but it was okay with me.
There was Ashley Simmons. She was the biggest gossip in the whole school. If you wanted to know who was who and going out with whom, she was the one to ask. As big of a gossip as she was, we were best friends and she’d keep my secrets. I could totally trust and confide in her. She was gorgeous. She was modeling for Teen People on her off time and with her flawless figure, 5’9” stature, dark silky hair and bright green eyes, she was made for it. Ashley had commitment issues and was going from one guy to the next every weekend. She wasn’t a slut; it’s just the guys all wanted sex from her and she wanted something a little more.
In our group there was also Josh and his girlfriend Stacey. Josh had done well for himself at this school. He was one of the nominees for homecoming king and was dating a cheerleader, Stacey. His grades were fine and he was thought to be getting a scholarship to Notre Dame for football.
As for me, I was at a height of 5’5” and not really a sight to be seen. I was still very childish next to Tristan and Ashley. I had grown up and developed and all so I just looked really innocent and stuff for a 17 year old, that was all. But I still wasn’t comfortable with me yet and next to Tristan, Jill, Ashley, Josh and Stacey, can you really blame me?
Then there was Andrew James Kaufman; Drew for short. Every guy wanted to be him and every girl wanted to be with him. He was tall at 6’5” he was a full foot taller than me. He had gorgeous blue eyes and a shade of hair that was a color all of its own; it was this messy brown blond that just melded together to sheer perfection on the top of his head. He had great arms and the sexiest abs in the county; he life guarded at the local pool and half the girls were just there to stare at him all day. *sigh* He was the captain of the football, track, basketball and wrestling team and had lead our football and basketball team to state! He had perfect manners, came from a filthy rich, high class family and was on the honor role. HOW PERFECT WAS HE? He was my high school crush, but he was the other part to the perfect high school couple. He was the captain of a lot of sports teams and he was going out with none other than Brittany Gibbons, the cheerleading captain. They had been going out for about two years. They had won homecoming king and queen and were being predicted as the class of 2007’s prom king and queen. They were the envy of every single person in the school.
My whole life changed right after first semester when Drew and Britt called it quits and broke up. The official story was that Britt and Drew were just tired of each other but Ashley told me that the real reason was that Drew caught Britt in bed with some guy and when he asked Britt why she did it, she said that Drew wasn’t giving her what she needed anymore and that Drew was obviously preoccupied with something else. And then Drew screamed at her that she didn’t turn him on anymore; Britt wasn’t hot and he had his eyes on someone new anyways. Drew causally left, dumping her there and then.
