Chapter 5
Starting a New Life
He replaced the wet cloth on my head and left so that I could get some more rest. The cold cloth felt good on my head, I had a bad headache and it was a bit of a relief from the pounding pain.
Sighing I slipped once again into a peaceful slumber, knowing I am safe now and have a new home. I awoke the next day to a very wonderful smell, wondering down stairs; I saw my grandfather in the kitchen making breakfast.
“You really must have been worn out, it is almost noon”, “I am sorry granddad”, “that’s ok Nathan have a seat breakfast will be ready soon”.
Sitting at the table I waited for my grandfather to bring in breakfast.
He placed a plate filled with eggs, bacon and pancakes in front on me. I did not know what to say; never in my life had my family ever given me anything like this to eat, usually it was some old stale bread and nothing else.
Seeing the confused look on my face my granddad said “Nathan it’s ok; your safe here with me, you can go ahead and eat as much as you like; they will never hurt you again”.
Smiling I thanked my granddad and began to eat my first real breakfast.
After breakfast was finished I helped granddad wash and clean all of the dirty dishes. When we had finished my grandfather told me he had some business to take care of with the mages guild and would be back before sunset.
I watched as my grandfather teleported away, with a “POP”. After he was gone I wonder outside but do not go any farther then the edge of the forest.
I do not want to run into anybody, knowing that they might tell my father and brother where I am.
Walking around to the back of the house, I notice that there are some strange looking horses in the pasture just beyond the fence.
They were the most incredible creatures I have ever seen, beautiful white horses with manes and tails that looked like flames in a fire.
Picking up an apple from the ground I held it just over the fence, waiting patiently I watched as one of the animals came over and ate the apple from my hand.
Laughing as its tongue tickled my hand; I reach over and patted the beautiful creature on the head. I was surprised when it didn’t feel hot at all; I guessed that this horse trusted me enough to not want to burn me.
I spent the rest of the day with that horse; until I noticed that the sun was hanging low in the sky. This meant that granddad would be home soon, I said my farewells to the animal and headed back to the house.
After entering I headed to the kitchen to start dinner, I wanted to do something nice for my grandfather as a way of thanking him for giving me a new home and a family.
As I was finishing dinner I looked towards the entrance when I heard that familiar “POP” which meant that my grandfather was home. “Nathan are you here?” I heard him call out “I am in the kitchen, dinner will be ready soon” I replied.
My granddad walked into the dinning room and saw that the table was set and that I was just setting dinner on the table.
“Nathan why did you do this for me?” “To thank you for giving me a new home and a real family granddad”
My grandfather smiled, then walked over and gave me a hug. After releasing me he said, “ the reason I went to talk to the mages guild is so I can adopt you and we can be a family” I smiled and thanked him for everything he had done for me.
We finished dinner and then headed for bed, my granddad came in and tucked me into bed then kissed me goodnight on the head. I yawned and closed my eyes as my grandfather quietly closed the door.
I, after all of my searching and pain now have a new family and home.
