CHAPTER 5
“What the hell?” I said as I sat up, wiping the tears away.
“Yeah I’m talking to you!” the voice said again.
“Where the hell are you?” I said.
“In your head.”
“Stop fucking with me!”
“Oh. But I’m not.”
“You sure as hell are! Where are you?” I say as start looking around.
“No, I’m not. And as I told you before, I’m in your head… I’m your conscience.”
“No your not!”
“How are you gonna tell me who I am?” the voice said with attitude.
“Cause your not my conscience.”
“Your in denial.”
“Shut up!” I say as I close my ears.
“You know, many people do that but it never works.” The voice snickers.
“Get outta my head!” I said as I slapped my head sideways.
“Now that’s one way to beat yourself up. Can you come up with the rest?”
“Ok,” I start to say as I take a deep breath, “ Let’s say you are my conscience. What the hell do you want?”
“For you to stop feeling sorry for yourself.”
“I wasn’t feeling sorry for myself.” I snapped, but then looked down.
“Yes you were. When you blame yourself for something, you’re feeling sorry for yourself.”
“I am not!” I whined.
“Stop arguing, damn it. Your mom died at the hands of a man, not because you were a coward, but because your were young and didn’t know what was going on.”
“I sure as hell knew what was going on!” I said as I swung my feet over the side of the bed.
“Yes, you did, you were afraid, scared of what was happening.” my conscience said. I buried my face in my hands, crying all over again.
“No, stop crying and go get Eric.”
“Would you stop ordering me around!”
“Oh! All the sudden when I bring up Eric, you get all defensive….you like him!”
“I do not like that rude, arrogant, jerk-face, stupid, retarded guy!”
“Oh, yes you do!” my conscience said in a sing-song voice.
“Do not!”
“You have the nerve to say all those things when he comforted you when you cried out there in the hallway, when he offered you a ride to the parking lot?”
“Well…..”
“Just as I thought, now go and tell the guard to get Eric.”
“Wait, how do you know I’m feeling better?”
“I’m your conscience, I always know what you feel. Now would you stop stalling and go get Eric.”
“I am not stalling!”
“Would you go get the god-damn door!”
“Ok, ok.” I said as I got up and opened the door. Outside was a guard, surely over 6 feet, brown hair, fair skin, with a suit of black on and amazingly handsome. “Um… excuse me, I’m ready. Can you get Eric?” I asked.
“Yes ma’am.” He said with a rich deep voice. He disappeared right in front of my eyes. Five seconds later he reappeared with Eric at his side.
“Jesus. “ I say as I stumbled backwards.
“Yes, now, let’s go into the living room. As we walk, I’ll tell you all that is happening.” I could’ve swore I heard a faint British accent in his voice.
As we were walking, I was observing at all my surroundings. A lot of ancient antiques was everywhere I looked. “You must love old antiques.” I said as I caressed a very fashionable antique.
“Yes. I have a niche for antiques. Perhaps it’s in my genes. Both my father and grandfather had a passion for antiques.” Eric said.
“Yeah,” I said as I continued walking beside Eric, ”I’m the only one in my family who loves them though. My mom never liked them as much as me, but she did like them…speaking of my mother, you said you were going to explain everything to me.”
“Yes.” he said.
“So?”
“Angel, did your mom every tell you what she did for a living?”
“Yeah, she was a teacher who taught 2nd grade.”
“I would’ve guessed she told you that.”
“Wait. What do you mean you would’ve guessed she told you that?” I asked, incredibly curious.
“Your mother wasn’t actually a teacher, you see. That was just a cover-up for what she really did.”
“So what did she actually do?”
Before he told me an answer, he sighed. “She was a vampire hunter.”
“Whoa! What!?” I abruptly stopped walking to look him directly in the eyes. “She was a what?”
“A vampire hunter. One of the best.” he said in a calmly manner.
“Yeah, right.\" Eric stared at me. One of those Your-doubting-yourself look.
\"I don\'t believe in that witchcraft shit.\"
\"Vampirism is not the same thing as witchcraft. Oh and by the way you\'ll be learning to do that in the future.\"
I shook my head. \"You know, a human can only take so much.\"
\"Yes, but a Hunter can take as much more then regular human can.\"
\"I know you are not saying that I\'m going to become a Hunter or whatever.\"
\"That\'s exaclty what I\'m saying.\"
\"Ok. I\'ll just except that, I guess. But I have one question.\"
\"What\'s that.\"
\"Why didn\'t she ever tell me that she was a Hunter from the get-go?\"
“Because she didn’t want you to think of her as a monster who killed just because it was her duty.”
“That’s a bunch of-”
“Shit? Yes, I suppose. But it’s true.”
“That’s hard to believe. That explains why she would sometimes come home kind of late.”
“Yes. She would take down more then one vampire so that took her longer then one.”
“But YOU\'RE a vampire. Well, that’s what you said.” I mumbled the last part.
“I am, but she worked for us.”
“Why would you kill your own kind?”
“Because they were the trouble makers.”
“Ok. Finish your explaining.” I said as I continued walking and so did he.
“One evening, we sent her on a job that we thought she was ready for, to kill one of the most cruelest vampires to ever walk the face of the earth. She planned it out like it was a breeze. It was perfectly put together and one of the most intelligent plans she’d come up with. She was to sneak into the main power room and basically cut the power. She succeeded in doing that. Next, she knew where Ivory was to be, the vampire she was to slay. He was going to be in his room about that time. She went up to his room, waltz right in, but instead of only finding him, she found his brother, Nicolas, and Ivory. They were in the room, waiting for her. Ivory had set up a trap in her own plans. But the only way he knew about the plan was for a trader to be within our circle.
Ivory and your mother fought with great strength. But Ivory made a mistake of telling Nicolas to get out of there. Your mother lunged for him and held a knife to his throat. Your mother threatened him if he took one step toward them, she would slice his neck with no more thought then slicing a chickens neck. He cared deeply for his brother and carefully put down the knife he was holding. Your mother was a very fierce hunter. As I said, one of the best. Ivory threatened your mother that he would kill her daughter, which would be you, and she slit Nicolas’s neck. After your mother escaped that night, Ivory was calling for your mother’s blood. She came to us the next morning wanting to quit for your safety. Ivory threatened you and even though she was a highly skilled hunter, she couldn’t risk your safety, so she quit. A few weeks later, we got a letter saying that three of Ivory’s most skilled assassins killed your mother, but you got away.”
“I remember what happened that day. It’s as if it was just yesterday.” Eric gave a head nod to my statement. After turning a couple of complicated corners, and descending a big flight of stairs, we arrived in the living room that was about the size of my whole house. Eric led me to some chairs beside a couch and we sat down.
“I would’ve never thought my mom would be something else besides a teacher. She seemed too sweet to kill.”
“Yes, that’s why she never told you.” After Eric finished his sentence, a lady, about 5’5”, very elegant looking, came through some double doors that I forgot to notice.
“Ah. Adina.” he said as he stood up to embrace her. I felt a surge of jealousy race across my body.
\'Why the hell am I feeling jealous! I hate him!\'
“Angel, this is Adina. She going to be your personal trainer.”
“Nice to meet you.” she obviously had some kind of accent. She reached a hand out towards me as in greeting.
“Wait! A Personal trainer? For what?!” I said as I stood up.
“Sit down, Angel. I’ll explain everything.”
“Yeah, you some how always forget to tell me something.” I said as we all sat down.
“Ivory is still alive, you see.”
“Yeah, thanks for the memo.”
“Stop interrupting and let me finish.” he said as I rolled my eyes. “As I was saying, he’s still alive, and when you kill someone that has our name branded in your profile, you die with that person. You and I have the mission of killing him and his assassins.”
“Why didn’t you kill him in the first place instead of letting my mother do it.” I said as I looked away.
“Because it was her plan and she insisted on doing it.” he simply said.
“Well, you could’ve overruled her offer.” I said as I fiddled with my nails.
“We don’t overrule someone’s most precious offer, Angel. No matter what you think of it.”
“Yeah, Whatever.” Eric and Adina started a conversation on my training schedule I guess.
“What the hell?” I said as I sat up, wiping the tears away.
“Yeah I’m talking to you!” the voice said again.
