Chapter 6 – Bliss Taylor Grant
“Why didn’t anyone tell me how much pain this was?” Kaori’s voice traveled through the halls as she cried out her pain, the child inside of her ready for life, though Kaori was less than ready to introduce her to the world.
“I tried to tell you,” Mrs. Oshidori chastised from Kaori’s bedside.
Yuki looked to her father, who was pacing down the hallway, unable to sit still. Yuki was unsure what he was more worried about, his daughter, or that his granddaughter may be the most inbred creature since Kyoei’s family. Okay, bad analogy Yuki, but she was worried about many things, and watching her father pace was doing no good for her nerves. In fact it was making her about three time’s worse.
Kaori let out another unending scream that had Yuki sinking even lower in her chair. Maybe she should rethink her ideas on how many children she wanted to have. This sounded painful, and adoption was always a welcome idea.
“She sounds like she is doing well.” Yuki looked up to see Shai standing beside her, little Shu fast asleep in her arms.
“Shai!” Yuki cried excitedly. “What are you doing here?”
Shai looked guilty for a moment, shifting from one foot to another. “Kaori asked me to come.”
“Kaori did?”
Mr. Oshidori stood before the two girls, looking over at them questioningly. Shai shifted again, her back against the wall. Yuki stood up to stand beside her friend, suddenly worried about what she did not know.
“Yes sir,” Shai said quietly.
“Why?” he asked cautiously.
Shai looked from Mr. Oshidori to Yuki, and then down at the ground. This was so hard to explain to the two of them, and she knew they would both be angry, with her, with Kaori. “Kaori wanted to tell you herself,” she said to the tiled floor, her grip on Shu tightening.
“THIS HURTS!!!”
Mr. Oshidori turned to the sound of his daughter screaming, as nurses and his wife told her to push, to endure the pain of childbirth. Mr. Oshidori turned back to Shai and took a step back away from her, almost like she was holding some sort of contagious disease. “Shai, I want you to tell me what is going on right now.”
“Kaori wanted me to come by and see the baby,” Shai admitted, backing further against the wall and seeming to use her son as a shield against the older man. “She wants me to consider adopting the child.”
“What?” Yuki was the first to sputter, looking to her best friend and feeling betrayed. Not only had her sister been keeping secrets, which by now she was wholly used to, but her best friend had not even told her about this alleged conversation.
“My grandchild?” Mr. Oshidori positively fumed. “My daughter wants you to take care of MY grandchild? For what purpose?”
Shai nodded slightly, seeming to shrivel upon herself. “She thought that her child would have a playmate, someone to be with, while at your house you were still…” and with that Shai glanced at Yuki sadly, “having a hard time with your daughter.”
Mr. Oshidori, smoke coming out of his ears and all, burst through the door of Kaori’s room without waiting for a response any longer. He was greeted by sounds of nurses telling him, “Sir you can not be in here,” and other shouts, but his voice was predominant through the room, even thundering over the screams of Kaori’s next push, “You think we are unfit parents, is that it?”
The door swung closed and Shai and Yuki were left out in the hallway with a stirring Shu, who looked grumpy at having been awoken, but not interested in fighting sleep and placed his head back on his mother’s shoulder. There was silence between the two girls, despite the turmoil and commotion going on in the room across the hall from them.
“I’m sorry,” Shai said quietly. “I didn’t mean to make it a big secret or anything, but Kaori did not want me to say anything, and I thought maybe she would change her mind once she lays eyes on her child.”
Yuki leaned back against the wall and sighed. “I’m not mad at you,” Yuki said flatly, though somewhere Shai knew she was. “I’m just… confused. I never knew Kaori felt so low about our parents.”
Shai hated to be blunt, but she was going to do it, and regret it. “We are talking about the girl who hid the fact that she was sleeping with the entire student body, including your brother, from her parents. And you are the sweetest healthiest girl, and they treat you like a stranger. She probably wants her child in a new environment. Plus, she does not think that they will be able to look upon a child who was born by her and her brother. I do not even know if you are going to want to see that child.”
Yuki’s breath caught, though it was what she suspected all along. “It is Nakago’s?”
“Almost 100% no doubt,” Shai admitted. “At least, that was what she told me. She came over to see me that day after she saw Danko. She looked so tired and drained, and something Danko had said had made her think about her child, and suddenly Kaori wanted nothing but a better life for it.”
Yuki and Shai fell silent once again. Yuki stared at her worn sneakers, thinking she should buy herself a new pair, letting her mind wander, but it could not stay far gone for long. “What does Kyoei think about that?”
“He says that means we are going to have a large family, because he wants two more,” Shai said, her flush heavy on her face.
“Wow Shai, you’ll have four children to take care of,” Yuki said in awe. “Four? Man, and I can’t even get my boyfriend to stay in the country and you are planning on your next children.”
“This won’t be for a while!” Shai insisted, her voice high and tense. “I’m not… no more from my body until Kyoei and I are married.”
“And you are so sure you are going to marry Kyoei?” Yuki asked slyly.
“Don’t ask like that,” Shai flushed. She continued to look down at the floor, her face red from embarrassment and being caught in a plot that she had not confessed to Yuki.
“Shai?”
“Yeah, Yuki?”
“I think Kaori probably made the right choice asking you.”
“Why didn’t anyone tell me how much pain this was?” Kaori’s voice traveled through the halls as she cried out her pain, the child inside of her ready for life, though Kaori was less than ready to introduce her to the world.
