Chapter 6
I woke up at about 8:00 to a big wet kiss from Zeus. Gabriel was snoring so I got up quietly, trying not to wake him up. I walked to the door to let Zeus out. I opened the door and out he went but as I closed the door something caught my eye, something big. When I opened the door to take a better look I realized that the yard was littered with carcasses of deer. From fawns to trophy bucks. They’d all been cleanly killed and arranged as if sleeping. The largest of the bucks had a note taped on one of its antlers. I walked up to the dead animal and the closer I got the more magnificent the animal became. He was beautiful a Boone and Crocket buck for sure. I removed the note and began to read.
Dear Sister,
Please take these as a gift from your loving brother. Think of them as a welcome to the family present. I know you probably don’t take much stock in my words but please consider how better off you will be if you come and live with me. You wont have to lift a finger; you’ll be pampered like a queen. You will be a queen to the family. You’ll have power, and wealth beyond your wildest imagination. So please consider my offer. I’ve thrown my hat into the ring so to speak. I look forward to competing with the likes of Gabriel and Joshua; I even believe that Brian is going to vie for your affections. I leave you with the thought that we must keep the bloodlines pure. We must keep them strong.
Truly yours
Lucas Ravenwolf
“Oh my god!” I stammered.
“Do you like them?” I heard a voice from the woods say. I jumped and out came Lucas.
“Please don’t be frightened dear sister. I do not intend to hurt you. I am simply here to see how you like my gift. So tell me how do you like them. It took me nearly all night to pick the best herd nearby.”
“What did you mean by keeping the bloodlines pure?” I asked.
“In my letter? Oh that simply means that we don’t need to sully the Ravenwolf blood. If we were to join our children would be the strongest and best. Think about it Bronwyn, we would rule the werewolf world with an iron fist as would our children, and our children’s children,” Luc said with a far away look in his eyes.
“Your crazy! I’m your half sister!” I said with disgust.
“It’s not so uncommon. In England it happened all the time. Kings married their cousins. Even Franklin Roosevelt married his second cousin.”
“The key word there, cousin, we’re half siblings. There’s a big difference,” I said in exasperation.
“Perhaps you just need to give it a try. Who knows, you might even like it.” Luc said with a smile.
“I doubt it. I’ve found my match and I don’t plan on leaving him anytime soon. You on the other hand need to be leaving.”
“Fine sister, I can take a hint, but let me give you something before I leave.” Said Luc reaching into his coat pocket. When his hand emerged again it clasped a small black velvet ring box. A panicked look came to my face and my mind began to race.
“I know what you’re thinking and don’t worry I’m not proposing, at least not yet. This is simply a ring that will offer you protection when you are away from Gabriel or he away from you,” said my brother offering me the box.
“Wait, you know Gabriel’s alive? How?” I asked confused.
“It’s my business to know these things, and some of the boys said they saw him run off. Now please open the box,” he said in earnest.
I took and opened it to find a small silver ring inset with a small, black, oval stone with a yellow strip down the center. It had the unsettling appearance of an eye following me.
“It is the ever watchful eye of Lycan, our god. Only members of high families are allowed to carry them. Wear it so it can be seen and all of the two-natured who see it will know that you are a noble and will not bother you. Now sister I must be off.” He stopped as he turned to walk away and looked back at me.
“I know you don’t trust me Bronwyn but please wear the ring, at least on a chain around your neck. What I told you about the ring and me being bound to protect are true. Ask Gabriel if you like, but I really do need to leave because your lover is awaking and he will not be happy to see my gift or me. Farewell sister until next time.”
I stood there dumbfounded, as Lucas slipped away into the woods. Did my brother actually have a good side? I didn’t think so, but he didn’t seem to be totally twisted and wrong.
“Bronwyn is everything alright? I woke up and you weren’t there so I thought… HOLY SHIT!!!!”
I turned and saw Gabriel standing at the door.
“What the hell is this?” he gasped.
“They’re a gift, from my brother. He also gave me this,” I said showing him the box.
“He…Proposed?” he questioned in a dangerous tone.
“Oh no, god no. He said it’s the eye of Lycan, and that it would protect me because only the noble are allowed to wear it.”
“And it will. It is a really good idea in case you and I get separated. It will protect you just like Lucas said it would,” Gabriel said giving me the box back.
“You’re saying I can wear it?”
“Honey, I don’t care what you have on, it’s the skin underneath that I’m worried about.”
“Oh you sweet talker you,” I said sarcastically.
“You know you love it,” said Gabriel pulling me into his arms.
“I seem to be really popular now,” I said.
“Well let’s see, we have your half brother Lucas, your life long friend Brian, your classmate Joshua, and your ex-boyfriend Steve, all of whom are after you.”
“You left some one out.”
“Who?” He asked in confusion.
“YOU idiot!” I said gently punching him in the side.
“Oh, I didn’t count me because I’ve already got you,” Gabriel said smirking.
“Back off Rin Tin Tin, you don’t have a thing. We haven’t been engaged, or married, or formally made mates,” I said counting the things off on my fingers.
“Speaking of that…” he said getting down on one knee and pulling a ring box out of nowhere. “ Bronwyn, love of my life, would you please give me the best gift a man could have and become my wife?”
