Doctor Mechanic
Paging Doctor Mechanic...
It had been almost two years, and Summer was growing like a weed. Kessie and Connor had grown as well, as had the puppy and the cats.
Raquella and Lucilla had talked a lot, since Summer had been potty training, Raquella was starting to miss her baby.
“You are crazy.” Lucilla said.
“I want another child, Lucy...” Raq said.
“Why? We’ve got three loving children as is, why would you like another one?” Lucilla said, as the women were laying, talking before going to bed one night.
“I know... but I’ve been thinking about it for a while.” Raq smiled.
“You’re nuts, you know you couldn’t carry another child, they had to remove your uterus during the emergency surgery you had.” Lucy sighed.
“I know... I know.” Raq said.
“You haven’t been home enough lately anyways, always working two shifts at the garage.”
“Lucy... I haven’t been down at the garage.”
“You haven’t?” Lucy became mad, “THEN WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN...”
“Don’t yell until you hear my story...” Raquella interrupted her now enraged wife.
“It had better be good.” Lucy said, “Or you are sleeping on the couch for a month.”
“I have been attending medical classes...” Raquella smiled.
“What?”
“Pre-Medical actually, I am trying to get into a doctorate school, I should know in a month.”
“You’ve been hiding this from me?”
“Yeah...”
“WHY???” Lucilla was seconds from making her wife sleep on the couch.
“As a surprise, I wanted to know if I could be accepted to the college or not before I said anything... I just want to give my family a better life.”
“Well... Doctor... is it time for my examination?” Lucilla laughed, changing her tune really quickly.
“What sort... of examination?” Raquella smiled.

“Straight A’s Mama?” Kessie smiled, “You can be a doctor in no time!”
Raquella had shown her family the last semester ‘report’ card she had.
“I’m not sure...” Raquella said, “It’s going to be tough... and tough for your Mommy too.”
“What do you mean?” Connor smiled, he was getting so big, he had received his very own cauldron on his last birthday, but he still wasn’t allowed to burn things. Kessie, however, was finally allowed to burn things, and even allowed to start doing her own private spells and rituals. Connor was still part of the family circle, and couldn’t wait until he was Kessie’s age.
“I mean, Mama is going to work long hours, have little money, and never be home... it’s going to be tough for all of us.” Raquella sighed.
“Honey, if you really are willing to go through so much to become a doctor... and if that is your dream, then we can make ends meet for a while.” Lucilla said, “Just, we’re going to have to wait for our next child...”
“Mommy? Mommy is gonna have a baby?” Summer said. The two year old was sitting on th e couch, playing with a cat.
“Not right away...” Lucilla said, “After your Mama starts her residency.”
“What’s that?” Kessie said.
“It’s where Mommy makes it to become a doctor... then she works as a doctor.” Lucilla said.
“Mommy, we love you!” Kessie said.
“Thank you guys... wait... what time is it?” Raquella looked at the clock. “Oh, we are going to be late, Kessie, Connor, go get your cloaks, Lucilla, I’ll get Summer ready.”
Soon, the family unit was on their way to their meeting deep in a nearby forest, and they were all thinking about how nice it would be for Raquella, or Mama, to be a doctor.

“Mama! Mama! The mails here! The mails here!” Kessie came running in off of her school bus about four days after their talk.
“Oh?” Raquella smiled, taking the small stack of letters from Kessie. She had the day off, and Summer was napping. Raquella was studying something on intestinal care. She put the book down and flipped through the pile of mail. “Bills... bills...bills” she caught Kessie’s eyes, “Why is Bill sending us all his mail?”
Kessie laughed at that, it was a joke that her and Mama had shared for years, ever since Kessie was old enough to bring her the mail from the box.
“Oh, hey, Kessie... this is from the college I applied to...” Raquella held up an envelope.
Kessie jumped up and down, “Hey! Read it! Read it! Please???”
“Okay, okay...calm down, I’m opening it...” Raquella opened up the flap and pulled out the papers, and read aloud, “Dear Mama...” She looked up at Kessie.
“They don’t call you Mama!” Kessie laughed, “But go on!”
“We are proud to inform you that you have been accepted to our college...”
“YOU MADE IT!” Lucilla smiled, she had just came in from work, and heard Raquella saying the last part.
“She did it Mommy! She DID IT!” Kessie jumped up and down happily. “She made it into DOCTOR SCHOOL!”
***
“You know, we celebrate...” Raquella said, as the couple got ready for bed.
“Yeah, it’s going to be hard for us this next few years...” Lucilla smiled, “You have to get something to help you through school.”
“I have a grant... but I don’t think that will be enough, I am nervous that I will be taking food out of the mouths of my children.” Raq sighed.
“You won’t take food out of your children’s mouths, Raq... I am working full time, and we can figure out how to survive.” Lucilla smiled. “I’m proud of you.”
