Chapter Six
Theo stared at his father in disbelief.
‘England. You want me to go to England? When?’
He couldn’t believe it. He had been waiting for this chance for months now. He couldn’t stop the smile playing across his face.
‘Yes I want you inspect an area of land I’m thinking of buying for a project. You should be there for about two weeks in total. I can keep in touch with you easily. I will expect pictures of the site and a full plan to be done for any problems that may arise. The weekend will be your own I know how much you have longed to see our mothers home land this should be a great opportunity or you.’
It was true he had always longed to see the place his mother had grown up. His father had gone against tradition and married a woman of non Italian origin much to his family’s disagreement. But things had worked out perfectly and they had had a long and happy marriage. Then when his mother had died far too early his father had never been the same. He had been a fantastic role model. But the light had gone out of his eyes and he had lost his shine. Theo was positive that the reason his father was sending him to England was simply because he could bear to go there himself. It held special memories for him that he didn’t want to reply even now.
‘I would be honoured to go Father. I promise you I shall do the best work possible for you and I will get you the best deal on the land.’
‘You shall be leaving first thing in the morning. I have arranged for the jet to be ready then. I hope your time shall there shall be fruitful my son. I know that England holds a special place in my heart and im sure you will see why when you arrive.’
‘I am to father!’
Alexis shut the door as quietly as possible. She couldn’t bear a confrontation with he mother right now. Her face was throbbing and she needed to get ice for her eye. Music coming from the living room signalled her mother was entertaining one of her guests and by the time she would be three sheets too he wind by now. Alexis creped into the kitchen to get a few cubes of ice in a towel. Nearly out the door she was confronted by her mother.
‘What the hell happened to you? You look like shit!’
‘I feel down the stairs at college.’
‘Well don’t bleed on the floor or throw up you’ll be the one cleaning it up if you do’
‘I know mother. You having a nice night?’
‘Yes I am so don’t think you can ruin it. This one is special ok. He has money and he is going to take me away from this hell hole and away from such an ungrateful daughter.’
‘That will be nice for you when are you leaving?’
‘Don’t you speak to me like that!’
Her mother raised her hand and slapped Alexis’ already swollen face. No sound apart from the slap was made. Alexis had learned never to make a sound it only spurred on her attackers. She just took the actions and would cry later.
‘Can I go now mother I’m rather tired. I shall not disturb you I promise.’
Without waiting for an answer Alexis rounded her mother and escaped up the stairs. She couldn’t take any more this was the final straw. College was no longer worthwhile. She wouldn’t be able to show up for at least another week because of her bruises and swelling. What was the point in anything anymore? Yes she had Theo but e was a name on a screen nothing more. What was the point? With this point in the forefront of her mind Alexis turned on her computer and logged on.
