::nothing false and possible- chapter six::

Alec woke up with a start and sat up in bed. He looked around his room and realized that the cause of him waking up, in such a way, was lying right beside him. Andrea had snuck into his bedroom during the night and crawled into his bed, without asking. She had done this since she had learned to brave the walk across the hallway, during the night.

Andrea, as a child, had been deathly afraid of the dark and the boogey man. As a young adult, she was still afraid of the darkness and what it might be hiding. Alec tried not to overanalyze his child, or her strange behavior, because he knew that it could make her develop a complex, which might involve him, as well. He just allowed her to sleep on the other side of his king sized bed, and hoped she didn’t hog the covers or kick him, overly much. There were mornings where he would wake up with bruises on his legs and, inexplicably, on his torso.

Alec threw the covers off of himself and tossed his legs over the side of the bed, before standing up and stretching. It was five o’clock in the morning and by his watch, the perfect time to make a cup of coffee. Alec shuffled into the hallway and down the stairs, before heading to the kitchen and pulling out all of the coffee things. He put in a new filter and scooped a hefty scoop of Maxwell House into the little basket. He turned on the pot and leaned against the counter and looked around the kitchen, aimlessly.

Alec noticed that his phone, which was charging up on the counter, was blinking, indicating that it had a message waiting for him. He picked it up and called his voice-mailbox, waiting patiently until it directed him to press one. He did so and smiled when he heard Stephen’s voice on the other end.

“Hello, sexy… it is 2:34 in the morning and I was just calling to ask if you wanted to wake up super-early and meet me for a bagel at Café Lanier. Say six o’clock? You don’t have to call me back or anything. I’ll be there, whether you come by or not. I just wanted to give you the option to see me again before I get murdered by my father.” There was a quick chuckle and another voice in the background that seemed to be trying to cut Stephen’s call short. “Well, I have to get back to… Heh…” There was a muffled ‘shut up’ and the sound of laughter. “I’ll talk to you later, Alec. Hope you can make it.” The phone went dead in Alec’s ear and he swore, silently. Who was Stephen with at two in the morning?

Alec put down his phone and grabbed a mug out of the cupboard. He filled it with coffee and blew over the top of the cup, while putting the pot back on the eye. He sipped the coffee and hissed as it burned into his tongue. Who in the fuck was with Stephen at two in the morning?! Alec rolled his eyes and put his cup down on the counter. He was acting like a jealous boyfriend and it was starting to make him sick.

He knew that he didn’t have any rights over the boy or any say over who he was… sleeping with? Alec frowned and shook his head. That wasn’t a pleasing thought, in the slightest. Was Stephen already in an involved relationship?

Alec sighed and padded his way to the downstairs bathroom. He switched on the light and looked at himself, scrutinizing every detail. He was trim, due to an excessively healthy lifestyle. He was slightly paler than was attractive in this day and time, but he wasn’t on the verge of translucence, so it wasn’t too dreadful. His hair was starting to show some peppering of gray at his temples, which just shouted out how old he was starting to become. Alec sighed and stared into his reflection’s eyes. Forty was right around the bend; That scary ‘over-the-hill’ bend, where all of your friends threw you a party with black balloons and gave you dentures as a gag gift.

Alec shook his head and stripped off his tee shirt and boxers that he had slept in. As an afterthought, he shut the bathroom door. Most likely he wouldn’t have any visitors walking into his bathroom, while he was taking a shower, but Andrea would probably be up and down for the rest of the night, to raid the fridge. She wouldn’t appreciate catching a glimpse of him, as he stepped out of the shower.

Alec started his shower up and scrubbed efficiently, before turning off the tap and stepping out into the steam filled bathroom. He grabbed up a towel and dried off, while watching his form start to appear in the mirror once more. The image was coming back into view as the hot fog drifted into the ventilation system. Alec couldn’t help but laugh at his appearance. He had looked like a sulky, waterlogged little boy. Now, with the laughter in his throat and the sparkle it added to his eyes, he looked more like the young man he remembered so many years before. Maybe things weren’t so bad, after all.

Alec went to his room and grabbed up a casual button-up and a pair of khakis. He pulled out a pair of boxer briefs and went into the hallway to get dressed. After he finished pulling up his pants, he buttoned them and sauntered back into his room to look for some socks.

“Can I use your make up today? I ran out yesterday morning.”

Alec looked at the girl who had tangled herself into his covers and smiled. “Why don’t you buy some more?”

Andrea shook her head and yawned. “I don’t have any money.”

“You got your paycheck a few days ago.” Alec said with a scowl. “What happened to it?”

Andrea tossed her hands up over her head and pushed against the headboard, while stretching out her back. “I work four da wea week, Alec. After buying cigarettes and paying you for my car, there is nothing left.”

“You only have to pay insurance and we are filtering that through me, so it only comes out to… what? Is it eighty dollars a month, now?” Alec arched a brow. “I know that cigarette prices have gone up, but I really think that you should come out with a little left over.”

Andrea turned over in the bed, with a huff. “Jesus, Alec, I just wanted to use some foundation. If youn’t n’t want me to, you just had to say no.”

“It isn’t about the make…” Alec took a deep breath and prayed that he wouldn’t lose his cool. “I just want you to know where I stand on you using your paycheck to buy drugs, so that you can just bring them home and do nothing but get high.” Andrea didn’t move or say a word, so Alec continued. “I don’t agree with you using your salary to buy pot, but if you are going to do so, let me be the first to tell you that if I find it, I will make a small bonfire in the backyard and get the neighbors to come over and enjoy our company.”

Andrea turned over and looked at her father, wide eyed. “I don’t…” Andrea gulped slightly and shook her head. “I don’t bring that junk home, Alec. I wouldn’t do that stuff in your house.”

Alec watched his daughter and shook his head. It was okay to do it, but not under her father’s roof? “You have a strange view of right and wrong, Andy.” Alec went back to looking for socks anghedghed. “I’m going to meet a friend at that coffee shop, Café Lanier. You can use my cover up, but remember that the stuff goes on really light, but it works better than you would imagine. You only need a dab.”

Andrea was silent for a moment and then she sighed, loudly. “Are you meeting Stephen at the coffee shop?”

Alec stopped what he was doing and threw a look over his shoulder. “Why would you say that?”

Andrea sat up in the bed and shrugged. She flattened the covers around her and looked at the floor. “He likes to go to the café early on Saturday mornings, before it’s busy. Usually he would invite me to come and talk about his night with his newest lay. His stories about Miss Chesterfield would be the most interesting. Also, the ones having to do with Leo, the son of the guy who owns the sawmill that Stephen’s dad works at.”

Alec’s jaw hung open. “You mean Stephen’s bisexual? I had no idea.”

Andrea gave her dad a funny look and shook her head. “You mean, you thought he was straight. What? Is your gaydar off or something?”

Alec shrugged a shoulder and pulled out a pair of socks, before going over to the closet and grabbing a pair of loafers. He sat on the edge of the bed and started to put them on, when he stopped and sighed. “Have you ever been with Stephen, Andrea?”

Andrea was quite for a moment. “I kissed him once… last year after he and that student teacher parted ways, I tried to feel out my pull on him.” Andrea sighed and lay back down. “He told me that he loved me, but he wouldn’t ever be able to make me happy like I deserve. He has a crush on Chris, this tenor in our chorus class. The guy’s straight though, so it won’t work out.”

“Does Stephen have a lot of crushes?” Alec tried sounding nonchalant, but it came out strangled.

Andrea didn’t seem to notice, as she shrugged. “He doesn’t really crush on guys that much, actually. He gets laid more than the average straight guy, though. He’s always super safe about it, so I hear. I remember him telling me about this one guy, from the music clinic… Apparently, the guy was double jointed and…”

Alec cleared his throat and gave his daughter a pleading look. “I really shouldn’t be thinking about your best friend in that sort of position, Andy.”

Andrea sighed and rolled her eyes. “It’s not like you don’t already. Jesus, dad, everybody does. All the pretty boys in town want Stephen to top ‘em, not to mention the pretty girls.”

Alec slipped on his shoes and nodded. “Stephen only top?”

Andrea chuckled and swore, quietly. “As far as I know, padre. He’s never told me otherwise. I keep telling him to try new things, but he seems to think that means new locations. Dad, have you ever fucked in a dentist’s chair?”

Alec raised an eyebrow and shook his head. “No.”

“How about in a bathroom?”

Alec gave his daughter a little nod and shrug. “Well, yes.”

“Was the other person suspended from the shower curtain rod?”

Alec’s jaw dropped. “This is completely inappropriate.” Alec made his way for the door and snatched his keys off of his dresser.

Andrea laughed and shook her head. “Please don’t tell Stephen that I told you about that. He made me promise not to give away that he used to be slightly promiscuous.”

Alec stopped in the doorway and looked back at his daughter, who was settling back into the covers. “Used to be?”

Andrea yawned and nodded, her face buried into her pillow. “Yeah. Leo hurt him bad, as did ‘Miss Thang’. Different ways, but it hurt all the same. I think it’s about time he broke back into the dating scene. It’s been a year since his last girlfriend, and two since his last boy toy. He’s too cute to stay single.”

Alec watched his daughter drift off and smirked. She had an odd sense of right and wrong, and an odd view on life and living… All in all, though, she was a pretty bright kid.

Alec walked out into the hall and headed down the stairs and out the front door. He locked up and went to start up his car. He thought about his conversation with Andy the whole way to the coffee shop and he set his mind, by the time he had parked. He walked into Café Lanier and looked around a moment, letting his eyes adjust in the dark cave-like ambiance.

“Alec, over here!”

Alec looked in the direction of the voice and smiled. Stephen was slumped in a chair, over in the corner, drinking a coffee and playing solitaire. His hair had the never-been brushed look and he obviously hadn’t shaved before heading to the coffee shop. Alec made his way over to Stephen and sat down opposite him. “Good morning, Stephen. You seem to be rather happy this morning.”

Stephen had a ridiculous grin plastered across his face, as he laid down a Jack. “I suppose I’m just a morning person.”

Alec sighed and watched the boy lay down another card. “What happened after I left yesterday?”

Stephen shot Alec a look, under his lashes, and smirked. “I was going to ask you the same thing. Did you have fun with your teacher friend?” Stephen looked back down at the table and flipped another card. He finished up the stack of hearts and flipped that quarter of the deck.

Alec sighed and shrugged. “We had a nice dinner. He told me about how things were going at his school and how he had been so proud of one of his students, for making thst fst for objective valedictorian. Apparently there are only two others that are being considered.”

Stephen chuckled and shook his head. “That’s great for that student. You have to work very hard to get all A’s and it sucks when you try your hardest and still can’t make the cut. I don’t even know the kid and I’m proud of ‘em.”

Alec nodded slowly and watched Stephen’s face. He smirked sweetly and nodded. “Me too.”

Stephen flashed Alec a toothy grin and nodded at the front counter of the store. “Aren’t you going to get a coffee or something? The hot chais are made to perfection.”

Alec leaned back in his chair and crossed his arms across his chest. “No, I’m good.”

Stephen chuckled and mumbled under his breath. “No, I am.”

“What’s that?” Alec leaned forward, across the table, and gave Stephen a confused smile.

Stephen laughed and shook his head. “I’m just being weird.” Stephen turned the last card over and flipped in onto its home stack. He shuffled a few cards around and then smacked the table. He looked at his watch and whistled happily. “Got it in under four minutes.”

Alec shook his head and rolled his eyes. “Let’s celebrate your victory.” Alec gasped when he felt something nudge his knee and start to slide up the inseam of his pants. Alec reached under the table and felt that it was Stephen’s sock clad foot. “Stephen…”

“Shut up, Alec.” Stephen leaned back in his chair, nonchalantly, and took a sip of his coffee. He inched his foot in closer to his prize and grinned. “You wake up hard this morning, Alec?” Stephen asked in a conversational tone.

Alec blushed slightly and shook his head. “I woke up with a knee in my side and my pillow was missing.”

Stephen frowned and pulled his foot back, a few inches. “You must have had a nicer night than you let on.”

Alec shrugged. His brain functioned more clearly, when Stephen’s foot wasn’t making friends with his cock. “Not so much, actually.” Alec fidgeted in his chair and adjusted his pants, more comfortably. “Andrea decided she needed to sleep next to a warm body, so she came into my room and hogged my personal space.”

It was Stephen’s turn to blush. “Oh…I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to sound like…”

Alec shrugged and grinned. “Don’t apologize. What did you do after I left yesterday?”

Stephen sighed. “I quit my job and cussed out my ex-employer. I think Teddy and Manuel may quit soon, as a sign of protest. I told them not to, but they seem pretty determined. After that I went and picked up the doll, Brad invited me over to his place, and we watched a movie. It got pretty late, so I ended up sleeping over and spending the night on the couch.” Stephen started shuffling the deck of cards, once more.

Alec nodded, as he watched his companion fidget with his cards. “You two enjoy each other’s company?”

“He’s a good friend.” Stephen ran his fingers through his hair and sighed.

Alec nodded. “Do your parents know about you quitting, yet?”

Stephen shook his head. “I’m going to tell my mom later on today. I’m supposed to be helping her get ready for this get together that she’s throwing for my dad and his buddies.” Stephen huffed. “She talked me into sticking around, during the party.” Stephen threw a hopeful glance up at Alec. “You want to come? She said I could invite a guy friend over.”

“Why not Brad?” Alec winced. He hadn’t meant to sound so snide. “I mean… He’s more your age and a little less… conspicuous, I suppose.” Yeah. That sounded believable.

Stephen nodded, slowly. “I don’t want him to come around my dad. He’s not… well, white or straight. My dad is a drunken asshole. You know this. Andy talks about it, constantly.”

Alec nodded. “I suppose I could carry on a conversation with your dad, without bringing up politics, religion, or sexual preferences.”

Stephen arched a brow and chuckled. “Stick to ‘How about them Vols?’ and you should do fine.”

“You mean I can’t bring up your sweet ass?” Stephen smirked, wickedly.

Stephen’s eyes grew slightly wider. “You would be more welcome to bring up my mother’s ass, got it? At least he could agree with you on that.”

“So when does the party start?” Alec chuckled. This could prove to be an interesting date.

Thank you all for reviewing. I think the best compliment I had was the one that charged me of being a sexually active gay man. I will hold that dear to my heart for all times. Anyway, I must ask you to review once more. It keeps me updating, folks. Love you guys/gals.
