Explaining to Mom - Part 1

Chapter 55 – Explaining to Mom – Part 1

“You are lucky you only got a Saturday detention,” Shai said stiffly to Bliss as they walked to the car.

“And suspended for the rest of the day,” Bliss pointed out, though she did not need to.

“It was only two classes,” Shai sighed and slid into the driver seat. Bliss hurried to slide into the passenger seat, her mom barely waiting to start the car.

“Mom, I’m sorry,” Bliss apologized. “I don’t know what came over me, but…”

Shai sighed and waved a hand to silence Bliss. “I don’t want you to make excuses,” she said wearily. “I’ve gotten nothing but excuses from every child, I want you to tell me the truth, and only the truth. You are the last remaining child in the house and I was hoping you would not betray me, but…”

“I haven’t betrayed you, Mom,” Bliss nearly cried. That was the last thing she wanted Shai to think, and so Bliss did the only thing she could possibly think to do, she admitted everything to Shai. She told her about dating Link, about how she and Shu used to fool around, about dating Daniel so no one would know about both incestuous relationships, about Davea spreading the rumor, about the drugs, about everything. The drugs were the least of the worry, Bliss had not touched it since she had met her real parents, she wanted to prove she was better than them, and had been trying very hard to do so, but now she ruined it all.

Shai surprised Bliss by saying, “I can’t believe Davea did that to you! No wonder you felt the need to make a scene.”

Bliss’s eyes widened and she looked to her mother in shock. “What?”

“Well, for a best friend, that was not very friendly of her,” Shai sneered and spat. Bliss had never seen her mom so passionate about something.

“You aren’t mad at me for dating Link? He’s my cousin.”

Shai gave a little shrug and at the first red light turned and looked at her daughter, really looked at her. She forced a grim smile, it was not the happiest of smiles, but it was the first semblance of hope that Bliss needed. “If you want to date Link, and he treats you right, that is fine,” and Bliss sighed in relief, but Shai was quick to add, “on one condition.”

“Anything,” Bliss said a bit too quickly. What if her mom asked her to do something inconceivable like… well, it was so inconceivable Bliss could not even think of something insane. Shai was not normally so reckless.

“With your blood being… what it is, and he being your cousin, my condition is the two of you not have children together if this works.” It was the bluntest that Bliss had ever heard Shai speak.

“I never thought about that,” Bliss admitted honestly. She had not been thinking of much lately but how she wanted to slug it out with Dave and if her and Link were really right for one another, and how warm his kisses were and that she forgot all about that. “I think that is a promise I can give you.”

“Then, it is fine with me,” Shai said as they pulled into the driveway of their house. “Now get your ass up to your room, you are grounded for getting into so much trouble.”

“Damn,” Bliss muttered, sliding out of the car.

Shai gave her daughter a smile. “I have to be accepting, but please, don’t do too much that I can’t handle, the other three did.”

“I guess I’m the lesser evil,” Bliss laughed.

Shai gave a loud sigh, but did not lose her bright eyes. “I guess you are.”

Hours later, as Bliss sat in her room and wondering what do with herself, she heard Shai call for her. Bliss raced down the stairs to find Link sitting on the couch. He turned and smiled at her a bit crookedly, which was his awkward smile, though he always tried to make it look tougher than it was.

“Link stopped by for coffee,” Shai said, and belatedly Bliss noticed the mug in front of him, that was empty, and meant that Shai had already spoken to him at length. “Yuki did well with him. Why can’t the rest of our children act more like you two?”

“It’s sad, isn’t it?” Link asked of Bliss with his crooked smile still plastered on his face. “When we are actually the good children?”

“Very sad,” Bliss admitted.

“But, Bliss only has two minutes to say hello Link,” Shai butt in. “Though you admit your fault in this, she still carried it out, and must be punished, but, I’ll give you two your couple of minutes. When I come back out of the kitchen, you will be at the door and ready to say goodbye.”

Shai walked out of the room and left Bliss to go to her boyfriend. Bliss walked to Link and they both reached out and hugged one another.

“I asked your mom permission to date you,” he explained. “She gave me the same condition she apparently gave you in the car.”

“Can you live with that?”

“Definitely,” he admitted. “What if we had kids and they turned out like us.”

Bliss shuddered in his arms. “I hate to think.”

“I should be going,” he said, leading her towards the door. “I don’t want to make Shai mad. Maybe when you are ungrounded you can come over to my house and we can try to tell my mom.”

“I’d like that,” Bliss said trepidaciously. She was not sure Yuki would take the news the same way Shai had, but it was worth a shot.

“I’d kiss you, but I know the moment my lips touch yours she will walk in, it is what she is waiting for.”

“Well then let’s not disappoint her,” Bliss said boldly and leaned forward, barely brushing her lips across Link’s. He was right. The moment Bliss’s lips even began their descent upon his Shai walked through the door, but unlike any other parent she said nothing. She just stood at the kitchen door and watched as Bliss awkwardly said good night to Link and closed the door behind her. She turned to Shai with a wide smile and that right there was the whole reason Shai could forgive Bliss. Her foolhardy behavior may not have been smart, but it made Bliss happy. The foolhardy behavior of her other children had made them more miserable. Shai wanted them to see what misery was, truly, though it was tough love, it was love all the same.
