The Late Appointment

Thank you to all my lovely reviewers for patiently waiting for this story to continue! I know it has been a long time coming! Due to a member of my family becoming seriously ill, I really didn't have either the time nor drive to write. Thankfully things are looking up and to celebrate I bring you all a new chapter! Part 5

        I sat on the pallet at the back of my pen, waiting impatiently. I had laid awake for what seemed hours last night, thinking about my current situation. I had to get out of here some how. I just couldn't take much more of this.

        It was the collared woman from yesterday.         I tore out of the pen as fast as I could, catching a glance at Aries's startled face. His deep laughter followed me down the hall as I ran.         I paused briefly at the door, looking out into the morning light and taking scope of what was happening in the court yard. I didn't see anyone around, the area clear and quiet. Without a second thought, I took off, running down the buildings length and checking around the corner. 

        Behind the dogs building there was a wooded area. It may have been a forest farther in but for right now it looked more like a maintained trail.  

        I looked around, hoping for a parking lot or some other means of escape. The woods might just be my best bet. 

        A woman's yell of alarm rose up from inside, the dogs beginning to bark in excitement. It wouldn't be long before they were on my trail.

        I had just come around a corner, faced with a fork in the trails, when a call came up from behind. Dogs barked and men were yelling.  

        Here comes the search party.

        I had to make it. I couldn't go back there. 

        The sound of something crashing through the woods startled me, making me glance over my shoulder just long enough to miss a step. An embankment curved down in front of me and my foot slipped, tipping me forward into a tumble down the hill.  

        Rocks and branches beat at me until I came to a gasping stop at the bottom, splashing into the small stream there. I lay there, my brain trying to catch up. Cold water swirled around me, chilling my body and stinging my cuts. The crashing and yelling of people was getting closer. 

        With effort I dragged myself up, stumbling into thicker and thicker woods. I rushed forward as fast as I could, feeling hunted. The noise of pursuit was closing in, the baying of dogs drowning out the people's voices. 

        There didn't appear to be an end to the woods. No highway appearing out of the trees. No cabin filled with people to help. No hunters who could take her to safety. Nothing.  

        I had to realize I couldn't keep this up much longer. They were not going to give up until they caught me and I was wearing down quickly. Between the abuse my body had taken and the lack of food, I was running on solely adrenalin. And it was running out fast. 

        I heard a snap of a twig almost directly behind me and whirled just in time to see the big German Shepard running up behind me. He circled in front of me, barking and baring his teeth.  

        I stopped dead. Damn it! How would I get past him? 

        I looked down, searching the ground for a tool. A large rock or thick stick might do it if I could only get close enough to him. 

        I never got the chance.  

        Three more dogs came up behind me, circling me. Right on their heels two tall broad men rushed up, crowding me toward the dogs.         

        "Thought you could run, did you bitch?" The dark haired man growled, his voice familiar, reaching forward for me. He wore pants and shoes like the other man but his chest was bare. 

        I dodged his outstretched hand, panic taking flight in my chest. "No! Don't touch me!" I scream out, fighting to keep them away. 

        "Heh, that little run didn't get you very far." The blond man laughed maliciously, grabbing for my wrist. He caught my arm in a bruising grip and twisted my arm behind my back, making me cry out. "Better luck next time. If you ever get a next time." 

         The two men twisted both my arms behind my back, forcing me to bend over at the waist. Pressure forced me to my knees on the rough ground.
