ch:5
Mom, are you done? Chris is outside." I bring the wheel chair round, and help her into it.
"What are we seeing? Bollywood again?" she asks exasperated.
"You\'ll love it, I promise."
"Why don\'t you two love birds go, I\'ll be fine, just park me infront of the tv, and I\'ll be right as rain."
"Mom, we\'r not love birds, we\'r friends. Where\'s this coming from anyway? You\'ve had a stroke mother, not alzymers. Besides, he suggested it, something about reminiscing the good ol\' days, when you used to take us to the movies." I say, remembering those uncomplicated days with yearning.
"Feels like a lifetime away." she says echoing my thoughts.
"Hmm. Let\'s go, we\'ll reminisce later." I smile brightly, then make to wheel her out but she grabs my hand, bringing me round to face her.
"I don\'t want this for you you know. I want you to have your own life, not help me live mine."
"Hey! Don\'t be silly, I am living my life. With the people I love. I feel very fortunate mom, honestly."
She looks away from me, shaking her head and smiling sadly.
---
"Hey Helen, how you been?" beams Chris at my mom, who smiles at him warmly.
"I\'m good. Although I\'m getting tired of waiting for you to confess that your in love with Mel and to take her away from here. I\'m not gonna be around forever you know." she mock scowles at him.
"MOM!" Jesus! She has such a warped sense of humour.
"What can I say, she just won\'t have me, I tried and tried but she\'s having non of it." he smirks, not missing a beat.
"Yeah, well I feel like bangin both of your heads together." she declares, and mutters some more, but I can\'t make out what she says, because well I\'m busy being really embarrassed right now. What\'s come over her today? God, I hope she doesn\'t say anything else for the rest of the night.
***
"Stop texting! Your missing the movie." I whisper as inconspicuously as I can. I\'m getting annoyed to be honest, if he didn\'t want to come, he shouldn\'t have bloody offered. Instead, he\'s txting and missing the movie, I can\'t stop wondering who he\'s texting, and therefore also missing the movie. My mom is snoring, because well Indian movies are long, and so she\'s missing the movie too. What a collective waste of money this turned out to be!
He\'s giggling! I\'ve never seen him giggle before. I don\'t like this.
Call it a seventh sense if you like, but it feels like someone just grabbed my heart and is squeezing harder everytime his phone vibrates, signalling a new message.
----
We arrive home, I get my mom ready for bed, my mind preoccupied with tonight\'s events. This unease just won\'t go away, if anything it\'s just been intensified by Chris\'s departing words. "I have news. I\'ll wait for you in the garden, come down when your done with Helen."
I go about my tasks robotically, trying to delay the inevitable; but the insistant ring of the phone tells me that the person calling, who knows my nightly routine and how long it takes, is getting impatient.
Feeling I can\'t stall anymore, I go down, ready to hear what he has to say. Getting this sick feeling that I\'m not going to like it.
---
"About time! I thought Helen died in the bathtub or something." he says grinning.
"Dont even joke about such things." I tell him seriously. He knows how I feel about mom and death being in the same sentance, and looking at him he\'s just realised his blunder.
"Sorry, you know I didn\'t mean it that way." he says taking my hand and leading me to my usual log. I sit down and he follows suit.
He seems nervous. Like he\'s struggling to compose what he wants to say, which makes me equally nervous. Chris doesn\'t get nervous. Chris smirks his way out of anything.
"Spit it out." I say, feeling tension twist in my gut.
He contemplates me for a while, then with a determind look in his eyes, he says "I think I\'m in love."
"Oh?" I ask cautiously.
"She\'s amazing. And she makes me feel... Giddy everytime I see her. Talking to her, just talking, excites me. Not even dirty talking Mel, just normal conversation."
"Oh." I say, conflicting emotions clouding my head, making me feel nauscious.
"Mel..." he says, obviously expecting more than an \'oh\' from me.
"When? How? You\'ve been going out with Sky, then hangin out with me, when did you meet her? Do I know her?" I do a quick replay of every girl he\'s recently spoke to, or about, infront of me and I can\'t come up with any candidates.
"I met her a while back, remember that football game against St Ives? Where we trashed them? Well she\'s head cheer leader there, and at the time she was Tonys girlfriend. God knows why, he\'s a dick. But you know me, she was taken, so I didn\'t go there, no matter how much I wanted to. Anyway, a couple of weeks ago I was at this club with Sky, she went to the rest room, I\'m there waiting for her when I hear two people obviously having a domestic, and the voice of the girl, I just knew it was her. I rushed over to see what the comotion was, just in time to see Tony raising his hand, obviously intending to hit her. Well, I saw red, took his hand, twisted it, shoved him away from her and well, beat him up. Anyway, we\'ve been in touch since then. I broke up with Sky so that I could ask her out, and you know what happened afterwards."
"Why get me involved? Why not ask her to be your actual grilfriend, no pretending involved? Why get me into this?" I ask bewildered. He doesn\'t even realise. Doesn\'t have a clue...
"Well, Sky assumed it was you I was texting and calling, and she made that scene in the cafe, so I just went along with it, to get her off my back. With you, we\'re in the same school, so she can physically see me with someone else and therefore she\'d leave me along. Telling her I\'m with someone else is not enough, she had to see me with someone else. And you were perfect.
"I was perfect..." I echo. Mel to the rescue. Who\'s gonna rescue my heart? I can almost hear it breaking, and the pain in unbearable.
"Your always perfect Mel." his smirk returning full force.
"Anyway. I have good news. Ruths changing schools, she managed to convince her parents when she told them about Tony, aaaaaand she starts at Handsworth High tomorrow! Therefore we can stop pretending. No one will give you any more shit, and unlike Sky, I know you\'ll love Ruth. She\'s amazing."
"Amazing." I smile weakly at him.
"God, I\'m glad we had this chat, I\'ve been wanting to tell you for ages; I\'ve not even told my mom, she\'s been practically planning our wedding for years, if I tell her that I\'ve found the one, and that one isn\'t you, she\'d have an annurism! Why don\'t they get that we\'r just good friends? I fucking love you, but I think i\'m in love with her... It\'s funny, I never understood the difference between the two."
"You think your in love with her?" I ask, wanting to know my destiny once and for all.
"Yeah... I think I am." he smiles shyly. Another first for Chris.
I need to get out of here before the hysterics I\'m holding onto come out.
"Thats just great. I\'m so happy for you." I tell him, my mask of \'nothing\' hiding my face. He beams at me, opening his arms, intending to hug me but I hastily widraw.
"I think moms calling me. Did you hear that? Definately calling." and with that, I get out of there like a bat outta hell.

I blame this chapter on a very dark night at work.
