Chapter Five

Note: Thank you all so much for rating and reviewing my story, I really appreciate it! I hope you like the new chapter!  New chapter next week.

Chapter Five:

They circled through the woods, senses on the alert for one sign of a human coming near. It was Russell who first caught a scent on the breeze, head snapping up, snout in the air as he took a deep breath. He grunted and dipped his head in the direction when Jeremy looked over at him, and then they split apart, heading for the delicious human smell of fear and sweat. It wasn’t long until they found a group of five humans, huddled close together for protection, rather than drifting off alone to be picked off one by one. They were like a herd moving across dangerous plains trying to protect their young. When Jeremy gave the signal, they closed in on their prey.

Calom fidgeted in the back of the car, unable to stop worrying about the others, even his brother who he was still angry at. Miriam reached over and took hold of his hand, giving him a reassuring smile, “They’ll be fine, Jeremy has dealt with hunters before. He knows how to handle it”. Calom found he couldn’t help but calm down a little at her words and sweet smile, she was so gentle for a Werewolf, he’d always found it strange but now he thought it was soothing. He could see why his brother loved her so much. He glanced at Midge driving up front, whose knuckles were white as she gripped the wheel.

“You alright Midge?” he asked, leaning forwards to get a better look at her pale face. She glanced at him briefly with her wide brown eyes, and shook her head ever so slightly. “I worry about Mickey all the time, he always gets over excited and tries to follow Russell’s every move. I just hope he’ll be OK”. It fell silent as they got lost in thoughts about their loved ones, Miriam sitting there rubbing her belly absently as she stared out the window. There wasn’t long left until she was due to give birth, for Werewolves developed much faster in the womb than human babies. She didn’t want to be left a widow with a baby or two to raise alone. From how big her stomach was growing it felt like there was more than one in there waiting to come out, and it made her smile despite the situation they were currently in.

“You and Elliot seem to be better lately, you haven’t argued as much” Miriam said softly, trying to keep her voice low so Midge wouldn’t pay any attention. Calom just shrugged, already uncomfortable with the conversation. “I don’t know what’s going between you two, but you seem like you belong to one another. Even with all the rivalry and arguments, I know you care about each other underneath all that” she commented, giving him a small, secret smile of understanding. He was about to protest, and if it had been anyone else he would have snarled and swore at them for butting their noses in, but with Miriam he just couldn’t. Instead he sighed and glanced at Midge, who seemed to be in a world of her own, thinking about her brother. “I suppose…I do care about him. It kind of scares me, knowing that I’m worried for him. I can’t stop thinking about him lately and it’s driving me insane…I hate that I’m having these feelings” Calom admitted, going red as Miriam’s smile got bigger and she squeezed his hand in reassurance. “Don’t be ashamed or embarrassed about these feelings. If it’s meant to be, then just embrace it. No one in this pack will think anything of it, and you shouldn’t worry about what we think anyway. It’s your decision and you have the right to happy with the one you love”.

“Ah, I wouldn’t call it love Miriam” he was quick to correct her, pulling his hand away to cross his arms over his chest, a slight scowl marring his features. Miriam chuckled but said nothing more, her gentle eyes looking back out the window as a light rain began to fall.

Blood splattered across the ground, silver bullets zipped dangerously close to their large furred bodies, fangs ripped at soft exposed flesh. Howls had erupted, followed by screams. The last hunter lay on the floor, one arm torn and mangled, the other reaching for the gun in front of him. He gripped it and whipped it up as one of the Werewolves noticed and advanced on him, bullet blasting from the barrel of the gun and catching the beast in the head so it slumped to the floor with one last grunt. He had no time to feel relieved however when another beast dug claws into his back and snapped his spine.

The Werewolves all looked to the fallen one, plodding over to nudge him with their snouts, making small whines and grunts of sadness. They watched as the unmoving body slowly shifted back into human form and a figure with black hair lay there, blood and smoke seeping from the hole in his forehead. Jeremy knew that even taking the bullet out would do no good when it had damaged the brain. Mickey would not heal and recover to see his sister again.

While Russell carried Mickey stealthily through the dark streets to their car, Jeremy and Elliot stayed to devour the bodies of the human men, until there was barely anything left except blood and bones. They had to make it look like some weird animal attack, not like a human murder. They had just finished when Russell returned with a couple of bottles of water in his hands, tears staining his face. The two of them shifted back, using the water to clean off the blood and gore, and then went to find their clothes to get dressed.

When they were in the car, Russell drove them on to the next town as fast as he dared, following the way the others had gone, his chest tightening as he thought about Midge and how crushed she’d be when she found out her little brother was dead.

Jeremy sat in the passenger seat beside Russell, eyes sad and haunted. “Don’t feel guilty, there was nothing that we could’ve done Jeremy, it all happened too fast” Elliot said from the backseat after watching his Alpha’s tortured face in the mirror. Jeremy didn’t reply, but he nodded, turning his thoughts to Miriam, her sweet face keeping him from feeling like a complete failure for losing one of his pack mates.

They reached the next town and were driving past an empty construction site when they spotted Calom in the shadows by the fence, waiting for them. He disappeared inside, the broken lock almost falling to the floor as he brushed past it. Russell parked not too far away and they made their way over to the site, finding the three of them inside, Miriam sitting on a stack of bricks.

“Mickey?” Midge immediately asked, walking forwards when she noticed he had not followed them in. Russell took her by the shoulders gently, shaking his head. “He didn’t make it” Jeremy stated quietly, bowing his head when Midge cried out, her knees buckling so Russell had to hold her up. She kept shaking her head as tears ran down her cheeks, and eventually she sobbed into Russell’s shirt, clinging to him. Miriam put a hand on her back, while Calom wandered over to touch her shoulder. Midge turned to look at him, and suddenly her sadness turned to anger, soft features twisting into a snarl. “It should’ve been you! It should be you lying dead out there! You never appreciated this pack, you only think of yourself! Mickey was kind and sweet! He didn’t deserve to die! You should’ve took his place!” she yelled as she pounced on Calom and beat her fists on him with all her strength.

Jeremy growled at her to stop, Russell tried to pull her away while Miriam cried, hands over her face. Elliot inserted himself between them, a dangerous gleam in his eye that made Midge finally back off and begin to calm down. Elliot turned to Calom, who just stood there with his eyes cast down to the floor, hands bunched into fists that hung at his sides stiffly. “You alright?” he asked, reaching out to take hold of him, but Calom pulled away and walked off and back outside without a word. When he was on the dark, lifeless streets, he put a hand to his thin chest and rubbed at the spot where he’d been shot just a few days ago, and thought about Mickey, the optimistic, sweet guy that warmed all their hearts, the guy that should have been there hugging his sister and joking about her worrying too much. He knew why she was angry. He had healed and survived and Mickey hadn’t. She was right, he had never appreciated his pack, had never really wanted to be a part of it. He didn’t deserve to be there at all. A part of him wished he hadn’t have recovered, he wished Miriam had left the bullet in his chest and let him rot in the Earth where he belonged.

He ran back to the car that he had arrived in and found the keys hidden under the mat on the floor. He started the car and wiped at the tears filling his eyes. Before he could pull away from the curb, Elliot opened the door and got inside, reaching over to turn the engine off and take the keys away.

“Do you really think running away will help anybody? Jeremy already feels bad because of Mickey, he already feels guilty for hurting you, how do you think he’ll feel when he loses his little brother as well?”  he asked, blue eyes cold and sharp. Calom scowled and barely looked at him, “Midge is right, I don’t belong in the pack. If I stay it will just cause trouble because she’ll always look at me and wish Mickey was here instead”. Elliot sighed in frustration and then said, “Don’t listen to her, she’s just upset. You belong in the pack just as much as any of us, you’re the Alpha’s brother! Jeremy would miss his own flesh and blood, Russell would miss your friendship, Miriam would miss you because she loves you like you’re her brother, and I…I would miss you too”.

“Yeah, miss winding me up all the time, I know. Give me the keys, I want to get going before Jeremy comes and lays down the law with me” Calom snapped, ignoring how Elliot’s words made his heart flutter like a trapped butterfly. He was surprised when Elliot growled and slammed his fist on the dashboard, and then he yanked Calom forwards and kissed him with a hot, dominant angry mouth that Calom couldn’t help but get turned on by. He eventually came to his senses again though and shoved him away, snarling and wiping his hand over his kiss-bruised lips.

“What the hell are you playing at? Don’t pounce me you pervert!” he sputtered, looking anywhere but at the man with the hot mouth that he now couldn’t stop thinking about. Elliot rolled his eyes and leaned over until Calom was backed up against the door, “Shut up for once will you?” he murmured, and then kissed him again, this time softer but still firm enough to assert his dominance.

Calom wanted to fight, he wanted to protest and growl and shove at him but he couldn’t move. He went limp and accepted the kiss in a kind of dazed state, and didn’t struggle when Elliot pulled him into his arms and pushed an insistent tongue into his mouth. He soon found himself winding his arms around Elliot’s neck and then shoving him back onto the seat and straddling his lap, never breaking the kiss for a second. Elliot reached one hand down to adjust the seat so it went backwards, and then flipped them over before Calom could realise his plan. He gave a little growl but stopped when Elliot nipped him on the neck and pressed his body against his, letting Calom feel the evidence of his arousal.

They continued to exchange hot, heated kisses, tongues clashing and fighting for dominance, and then Elliot reached his had between them to reach into Calom’s trousers, at which one point the small teen shoved at his chest. “We need to get back before they come looking for us”. Elliot huffed but agreed, sitting up and pulling the seat back up when Calom had shuffled back into the driver’s seat. They sat in silence for a few minutes as they calmed down, and then Calom was getting out so fast that Elliot had to hurry after him, and grinned when he caught a glimpse of Calom’s blushing face.
