Tuesday

It was well past midnight when Ellie woke up again, the room was slightly dark except for the street lamps outside her window. Which was enough light for her to see Mel. She was slumped on of the chairs; her feet were on top of another as Mel had in some form or another had fallen asleep. Her neck was cradle by the back rest of the chair. Her arms were folded in front of her as her jacket served as a blanket.

Ellie kept staring quietly as she tried to remember, she notice Mel left leg twitch a bit. Ellie turned to her side avoiding using her bad arm as she got comfortable and silently in the dark stared at Mel. Mel’s hair was well past her shoulder blades, although she had it in a pony tail. Ellie could tell the length of it or better yet she remember that much. Behind the closed eye lids she knew the hue color was a Light caramel. ‘Melissa,’ Ellie thought as she felt her eyes go heavy again. Ellie fought the sleepiness as she groaned which caused the figure in the chair to wake up.

“Are you ok?” Mel said as she yawned and sat up straight.

“Sorry.” Ellie mumbled as she saw Mel get closer and turn on the small over head light, they both cringe at the sudden light that assaulted their eyes but recovered quickly.

Ellie notice it immediately, Mel’s eyes were bloodshot red, she was going to comment about it, when she decided against it. She figured as much what led to state she looked in. Mel’s hair was ruffled up probably from running her finger through from frustration. Mel smiled tenderly at Ellie who shyly smiled back.

“Water?” Mel pointed at the cup on the table, the little dark pink cup stood out with its bent straw, half of it falling out; Ellie looked at it and nodded her head.

Mel stood and in an effortless motion grabbed it and switched straws and held it close to Ellie’s lips.
Mel could feel Ellie’s soft breath as she stared intently at the semi cracked lips, which slowly enveloped the straw. Mel closed her eyes.

Ellie internally moaned as the cool water ran down her throat, she had never felt so glad to taste water until now. She smiled as she nodded when she was done. Mel gave her a small smile as she placed the cup back and sat down again.

Mel sat there staring off but avoiding looking at Ellie directly, she was still fuming at Maggie’s earlier comments.
“why aren’t you home?” Ellie asked as she glanced looking for the clock.

“I’m not sure,” Mel admitted as she crossed her arms together, the a/c of the hospital had kicked in again and she was feeling chilly. She felt the goosebumps on her skin as she rubbed her arms and shivered a little.

“How was it spending your day with Maggie?” Mel asked as she reclined in the chair again and Ellie snuggled into the sheets as she felt cold also, she felt bad Mel was shivering cold, she glanced at Mel she felt her cheeks warm up the more she stared at Mel.

“It was interesting, she keeps telling me things about my high school but that was decades ago,” Ellie couldn’t help but chuckled at all the antics her mother was helping her remember.

“When did we meet?” Ellie blurted out all of a sudden. Mel looked at her quizzically, and then averted her gaze as she recalled. “We met towards the end of your freshman year in college.”

“ah” was all Ellie said as she closed her eyes, after a while Mel assumed she was asleep again when Ellie snapped them opened. Ellie really didn’t want to start bombarding Ellie with memories of them. It really wasn’t a good moment to start opening that path.

“You should really get some rest.” Ellie mused as she turned to be back on her back. “Yeah, but this is the only time I can be here without any disturbance.” Mel said as she closed her eyes and covered her face with her hands. Maggie had left for the day and Mel was going to take all the uninterrupted time she could get, plus she was bribing a nurse to let her spend the night since they had a strict no overnight guest rule.

“I have so many questions,” Ellie looked at Mel as Mel knew what the one question she had on her lips was. ‘Why does my mother hate you?’ Ellie thought in her head.

“Well you have plenty of time plus I have something that might help ya with all the questions.” Mel smiled reassuringly as she reached for Ellie’s hand but then hesitated and just awkwardly placed her hand on the bed instead.

Mel bit on her lower lip a bit as she blinked trying to control herself she felt like an idiot not knowing how to act around Ellie. Mel felt as if they were strangers all over again and essentially that was the case, but this time it felt even worse. Ellie nodded and they both went silent as Mel eventually took her hand back from the bed she retreated as she leaned back into her chair.

“Maybe I should go,” Mel finally said as she stood up, Ellie quickly shot her hand out an grabbed the hem of her shirt, “don’t” she pleaded with her eyes. Mel could see the trepidation in the green hues, those same green hues that used to always be full of confidence and arrogance at times. Mel didn’t care when Ellie acted egotistical, she still loved her either way. Now they were just a mess, a scared deer stuck in headlights.

“Ellie you’re not comfortable with me,” Mel mumbled as she finally took the hand that was grabbing her. She held it and entwined her fingers with it, something she wanted to do for a long long time. She could feel Ellie’s discomfort; she could tell Ellie felt scared, mainly because she barely could remember who Mel was.

‘There are so many things you don’t remember,’ Mel though as she sat again. Her heart pounded heavily in her chest as she felt as familiar twinge in her chest as she felt like crying, just like a long time ago.

“Doesn’t matter if I’m comfortable or not but I can surely tell ya that with you-,” Ellie cut herself off as she felt the heat increase in her cheeks.

Mel had to smile as she rubbed her thumb on top of Ellie’s hand. Ellie looked up to an amused face, Mel lips were slightly curved up and her gaze was so soft and warm.

“ah Ellie I Missed ya,” Mel mumbled as she closed her eyes.
Ellie was going to inquired about that but fell asleep too.
