Magic Doctor
The room was about the size of the dining hall at the Diner. The doctor’s bed I had been lain in was big enough for at least three patients, with unusually soft sheets and an enormous pillow. As soon as Blake set me down, I instantly wanted to drift back to sleep.
“Stay awake!” Came the voice of Doctor Fern.
Blake’s grip on my hand tightened as the other man approached.
The doctor then opened each of my eyes and shined a bright light into them. Then he began pushing down
on various parts of my head, which sent numb spasms of pain, causing me to cry out lightly.
“What’s wrong with him?” Blake asked Doctor Fern.
“Looks like a mild concussion, nothing to worry about, although he does have numerous lacerations which I will need to heal. Other than that, his life is not in danger here.”
The doctor then walked to a shelf which aligned the wall to my left next to the door and grabbed a pair of rubber gloves.
Blake looked me in the eye. “Who, or what, did this to you?” He asked, looking as though he were about to cry.
It was strange to see such a good looking man on the brink of tears. Even in this depressed state of his, he was extremely handsome.
A minute passed before I could think of a proper answer to this question. When I did speak, my voice was in a whisper due to my condition. “Everyone and everything.” I finally stated, referring to all the people who had hurt me and all the various items they used to do so with.
“Why?” The man asked, disbelieving. “How could anyone do such a thing to you?”
“May I?” Doctor Fern cut in.
Blake looked at him for a moment before moving to the opposite side of my bed to hold my other hand. The doctor then smiled down at me and snapped the base of his rubber glove on his right hand.
“Don’t worry, I’ll have you fixed up in a jiffy.” He smiled just as perfectly as Blake had a few nights ago.
The doctor then placed his right hand over my face and closed his eyes. I laid there, staring at the palm of his hand for only a few seconds before it began to glow, and almost instantly did the pain in my head go away.
Doctor Fern then moved his hand down to my chest cavity and once again closed his eyes. His hand glowed then dimmed, and it was suddenly easier for me to breath.
For the next ten minutes, the doctor continued to place his hand over the numerous injuries I had. I was still in a dazed state, no longer from the pain but from confusion. As I watched him hold his glowing palm over my right arm, I watched as a number of scrapes caused by some ones foot magically disappeared. The minor pain which they were causing me was gone instantly.
“There.” The doctor then stood up straight and removed his some how blood ridden glove. “That should do it. Though you did have a few extra internal injuries I would never have noticed just by looking. It’s a good thing Blake brought you here, your lungs had a small incision and were flooding with liquid, another week or so and you would have slowly drowned to death.”
Hearing that, my eyes widened in shock. I had no idea that I had been so critically injured. Thinking back, it probably was caused by some one stomping on me. Though a few days ago I had been kicked in the chest by a man who thought the sounds I made when I got hurt were funny. So that could also have been the cause.
Blake sighed in relief. “Thank you doctor.”
Doctor Fern then walked to a trash can to throw his gloves away. By now I had concluded that I had to be dreaming. There was no way anyone could magically heal anyone’s wounds in that way.
Cautiously, I sat up.
“Hold on!” Blake placed his hands on my shoulders just as I was struck by a dizzy spell and gently lay me back down.
“Why can’t I stand up?” I asked unconsciously.
Doctor Fern laughed lightly. “Because all I did was heal your wounds. I did not return any energy which you’re body had spent while trying to heal them itself, therefore you’re going to be a bit dizzy for about an hour or so. Now please take it easy.”
I didn’t like being unable to so much as stand. When I got this way, anyone could hurt me, and now that I could think straight I had to wonder why these people were being so nice to me.
Once again I tried to stand as fast as I could so Blake couldn’t stop me. Once on my feet, Doctor Fern stood in front of me.
My head swam and my vision almost instantly blurred, but I managed to stay standing.
“What are you doing?” The doctor asked.
When my vision returned, I noticed that the handsome doctor had short, slicked back white hair with light green eyes. He was wearing a long white doctors coat, black pants and a white business shirt.
“I’m leaving.” I declared.
The two men looked at each other in surprise.
“But how? You’re not well enough!” The doctor argued.
Blake then cut in this time. “At least stay for the hour Fern said it would take to recover your energy.”
It was strange, but some how I detected a minor sense of panic in his voice. They had to be up to something, of this I was sure. So I turned to face them and slowly backed up to the door. I could hear
whispering on the other side. All of a sudden, my legs gave out from under me in my unconscious exhaustion. Before I hit the ground, Blake had me in his arms while Fern was holding his hands on my back.
Panic suddenly jolted through me. I didn’t like being touched. I had been abused all my life and the only touch I had ever felt resulted in pain. I didn’t care if my legs were as heavy as lead, I had to get out of here. This place was just too different from what I’m used to.
Catching them off guard, I jumped back up with new found vigor, and burst through the door before the two even realized what had happened.
Out in the hall stood a large number of beautiful people, all eyeing me with excitement, as though I were the main attraction at a freak show.
I didn’t remember the way I had taken to get here, but I had to find out how to get back to that room. Where else was I suppose to head to?
Turning to my left, I found a path free of people and took it. There was another open door up ahead, so I quickly went through it to find that I had wound up in an enormous hallway. It was like something out of a
fantasy book.
There were more pillars just like in the room I was so accustomed to on either side of the hall, holding up a ceiling painted in the night sky. The walls were made of marble, as was the floor. There were golden vines wrapped around each pillar and the walls were decorated in the most complicated blue, white and gold pattern I
had ever seen.
“Singer!” I heard the voice of that stranger, Blake, behind me. “Come back!” He was calling from the doctors room as he made his way out and through the crowd of onlookers.
I didn’t have time to wonder why he called me that, and took off as fast as I could down the hall, looking for the stair case which I knew would lead back to that one place I had come to know so well.
Looking back, I saw Blake standing in the center of the hallway where I had been moments ago. Doctor Fern had a hand on his shoulder, and a number of the other onlookers were gathered around him.
“Come back!” Some of them called to me.
Dumbfounded, I stopped for a second. I saw a small glint of hope arise in their eyes, but then it vanished as I decided to turn around and continue running.
I have no idea how long it took for me to find the stairs, but when I did I found another man standing at the foot of them, gazing at me with a look of amazement on his face. Though it didn't take long for that to change into a grin.
He wore a long red robe. His handsome face was now set in the obviously common perfect smile. His chocolate curled hair drooped down the sides of his face. Like everyone else around here, his eyes were green.
I didn’t want to get any closer to this handsome man. I didn’t know him at all, nor did I feel like trusting anyone from this place.
Yet, as I stood there, he stepped aside and lightly bowed towards me.
Although I was confused, I quickly passed him and ran up the winding stairs. As soon as he was out of sight, I sat and willed myself awake. My energy was completely gone and I was sure there was no way I could make it all the way to the room.
Sure enough, the shadow came and drifted me home.
