Chapter Five
“Come on, come on…pick up pick up pick up!” urged Leian into her cell phone.
“Hello?” said the other end.
“Aiden! I need you to come get me now! There’s been an accident. I’ll explain when you get here. Please hurry,” Leian had quickly said.
“Wha-?” but that was all Aiden was able to say. Leian had already hung up her phone. He jumped up and rushed outside. His mind was racing. What kind of accident could’ve happened? As he recapped the day’s events he quickly realized something. Caz had not been involved in any of it. She had been there when they left that morning, but when he had returned to his apartment, she had gone. But where? She didn’t have a car anymore. It was still in the shop from her wreck. Savvy must’ve come and got her. But what could’ve happened? Not a wreck. He couldn’t deal with that right now. He didn’t even remember picking Leian up from work, but there she was, explaining to him what had gone wrong.
“-And I guess she must’ve gotten worried and that was when she came over. Alcohol poisoning. She’s just been admitted. They’re pumping her stomach now. Oh god, I feel this is my fault. She told me not to let her drink at all. This is my fault.”
“Stop it. Caz is an adult and she knows what she shouldn’t do.”
“Aiden? Are-are you okay? You’re covered in sweat. Are you hot?” stammered a concerned Leian.
“What? Yes, I’m fine. Just worried. That’s all.”
The two friends sat in silent for a few minutes while they sped to the hospital.
“Actually, you know, I’m not. Here’s the thing: Kai and Dylan are back together. I was at your house when you called me. Do you mind if I stay with you for a while? You know how I am around Dylan.”
“Back together?” gasped Leian. “Of course you can stay with me.”
Aiden felt guilty that he didn’t tell her more. He didn’t think she would react any differently when he told her his feelings than if told he was going to the store to buy more cheddar but he kept it locked up for now.
They arrived at the hospital and circled the parking garage before they could find a spot. It saddened Aiden to see how crowded hospitals were becoming. What kind of society did they live in?
“Do you know what room she’s in?” asked Aiden through clenched teeth as they walked to the entrance; he had just spotted Dylan’s car.”
“Um, yeah. She’s in room 801 in Tower G.”
How ironic, thought Aiden. 801 was the slang for homosexuality in anime.
After three turns and having to ask an orderly for directions once, Aiden and Leian finally reached Caz’s room. The corridor leading to Caz’s room was brightly lit and stark white. From the outdated vinyl flooring, which was peeling in places, to the cold plastic chairs pushed against the walls for mourning families, there was no liveliness in the place. It smelled worse than a hospital should. Underneath the layers of antiseptics plastered onto every surface was a stench without name; a sickly sweet scent that tickled Aiden’s nose and made the hair on his neck prickle. Aiden didn’t realize he had been standing outside of Caz’s room for a few minutes until Leian tugged him through the door.
It was a terrible sight. Caz was hooked up to at least ten different monitors, a tube was leading from her throat to a container next to her bed filled with her stomach contents, her eyes were closed and she was breathing heavily. Savvy was sitting in the one chair in the room. She looked almost as pitiful and fragile as Caz. Her hair was knotted, her eyes were swollen from crying, and snot dripped from her nose.
“Savvy, I-“ started Aiden.
“Shut up. Right now. I don’t want to hear a word from you. Either of you,” growled Savvy. She got up from her chair and walked into the bathroom.
Aiden and Leian just stood where they were, neither risking saying a word. So Savvy did blame them. They knew she would but what a slap in the face it was when it was actually admitted. Aiden walked toward the bed. It was very difficult for him; it was like his guilt kept him glued to where he was. He made it to the bed in what seemed like an eternity and stared down at Caz. He took her hand in his and began to cry.
“Look, I have to eat. Will you two morons be okay to stay in here with her long enough for me to go the cafeteria? Or do I need to ask a nurse to stay in here with her?”
Both conscious friends were shocked to hear her speak but they nodded an agreement. They still felt too ashamed to talk. Savvy returned to the hospital bed shortly to wipe the hair from Caz’s face and kiss her forehead, and then she stalked out of the room. By this time Leian had managed to get to the couch and began to softly cry into her hands.
“Now you’re here? God, my poor sister can’t even be in a coma without having to deal with you idiots. Try not to kill her this time.”
Aiden looked up. Kai must be here. Dear lord, what was he going to do? Aiden was pulled from his reverie when Dylan bounded into the room and threw himself over Caz and began crying.
“What the fuck are you doing here? Caz doesn’t even like you. Get the hell out!” roared Aiden. He knew he was overreacting but he couldn’t help it.
“Aiden, chill,” said Kai, laying a soothing hand on his shoulder.
“Don’t. Touch. Me.” said Aiden slowly and deliberately.
“Sweetie, it isn’t his fault. You should blame me,” interrupted Dylan.
This did nothing but enrage Aiden even more. At that comment, Aiden reached across the bed and landed a right hook expertly on Dylan’s face. “I do blame you, bitch,” seethed Aiden. He began to leave the room, turned around, spat on Dylan’s face, and stormed away.
You’ve got to be kidding me, thought Leian. Kai ran out the door after Aiden and Dylan was still sprawled on the floor, crying. “I’m going to hate myself for this,” she muttered and knelt beside Dylan comforting him.
It had begun to pour rain while they were in the hospital. Aiden pushed open the exit door and continued his march outside. He could hear Kai calling after him but he ignored him. He had gotten lost when he was leaving the hospital and had no idea where he was. He couldn’t even see the parking garage but that didn’t matter. All that mattered was that he was leaving. Finally, Kai caught up with him.
“What the hell was that? I know you don’t like him, but seriously. Stop acting like a bitch.”
“Oh, I’m the one acting like the bitch? Well, here’s this: tell your boyfriend, if he says he’s got beef that I’m a vegetarian and I’m not fucking scared of him!”
“What? What does that even mean? You know Dylan has no “beef” with you. Dear god, all he talked about was you. He even called out your name once during our….game.”
“Shut up, shut up, SHUT UP! I can’t deal with this. And you! You’re so blind you can’t even notice when he’s using you. Don’t you know he’ll just do the same thing again!”
“So? What is it to you what he does to me? Why do you care so much?”
“Why do I care? WHY DO I CARE?!?! Because I fucking love you! Damnit, I love you. Can’t you see that? I’ve had to suffer knowing that I’d never have you because of that slut in that room up there!”
“You what? Aiden, I…”
At this Aiden had lost all sense of self control. The rain was berating the two boys, soaking them to their very core. Aiden reached out and pulled Kai closer. His hand was now knotted into the hair at the nape of Kai’s neck. Kai didn’t resist, he just stood there, his hands limp at his sides. Aiden stared into Kai’s eyes and pulled him forward the rest of the way. Their lips met. It wasn’t what Aiden had expected. Kai’s lips were pressed hard together underneath his own. They were cold, tight. But he persisted. He held Kai there for a few minutes, while his eyes were closed. He loosened his grasp and stalked off farther into the hospital’s grounds.
Kai was thankful for the rain. It made his tears less noticeable.
“Hello?” said the other end.
