Sickness

Meg woke up at the sound of shouting. It wasn’t like the regular shouting to wake her up or to tell something to someone in another room. This was the type of shouting that involved some kind of fight, weather it’s verbal or physical. Meg sat up in the bed and yawned while stretching her arms out. She looked around and saw she was back home in Brock’s bed. ‘Must have been just a dream’ she thought. She swung her legs off the bed and stood up. She noticed she was alone in the room and that it was now 5 P.M.

There was a loud smash of what sounded like glass. The whole time Meg had been in this one family, she never encountered a fight here. She walked over to the door and opened and looked out of it too see who was around. She heard Cassy screaming out something to someone else, the she heard Brock yelling too. Meg walked over to the stairs and saw Jordan, her foster dad, standing close to the stairs. Jordan never really did anything with Meg or he didn’t even try to get her to open up like Cassy did.

Jordan had his arms crossed as Meg walked down a few of the steps to see what was going on. He turned around and saw her standing there. He walked up the where she was and opened his arms up like asking for a hug. Meg walked up tot him and he wrapped his arms around her in a gentle hug like her dad used to give her. She leaned her head on his shoulder and said “What’s going on? Why are they fighting?” just loud enough so he could hear her. Jordan pushed her away a little bit and sat down on the next to bottom step. Meg started to become a bit dizzy so she sat down as well. “Cassy and I found out what happened today” he said as he placed a hand on her back. “I’m sorry we skipped. I won’t do it again. Please don’t send me back” Meg said franticly. “We’re not going to send you back. And that’s not what Cassy is mad about. She’s mad that Brock did that to you and that you almost drowned because of his carelessness” he said in a gentle voice that seemed to drown out the yelling.

Before Meg could say anything at all, Cassy came in and stood in front of them. “Are you all right sugar? Do you feel better? Let me get you temperature” Cassy said in what seemed like one breath. Meg’s head was swimming to much to pay attention to her words. She noticed that she had walked off only to return holding a thermometer in her hand. Meg laid her head against Jordan’s should once again. Cassy placed the thermometer in her mouth and she closed her eyes. A few seconds latter a small beep could be heard and Casey removed the thermometer from Meg’s mouth. “What does it say Case?” Jordan said while stroking Meg’s head. Before she could hear what was said Meg fell asleep. “Her temp is at 103. Let’s get her to bed and call a doctor” Casey said.

Jordan lifted Meg up into his arms while giving Brock a stern look. He slowly walked up the steps, not wanting to wake her, and into her room. Jordan laid Meg down on her bed and covered her up with the heavy blue blankets. Casey brought in a glass of water and placed it on her side table. She stayed next to Meg as Jordan walked out of the room to get his stuff for work again. “Mom, I’m sorry this happened. I shouldn’t have” Brock said but was cut off by Cassy. “No Brock. You shouldn’t have left her alone. You are always telling me not to push her but there you are. You pushed her to meet you group of friends and above all that you left her alone with three guys! Don’t say you’re sorry to me.” Cassy walked past Brock and out of Meg’s room.

Brock sighed and sat on the edge of her bed. “I’m sorry kiddo. I shouldn’t have pushed you. I shouldn’t have left you alone. Could you ever forgive me?” he said but his words were on deaf ears.
