Chapter 5
Chapter 5
Marcus realized long ago that money would solve virtually all of his problems. His fear had been that this was one of those occasions where the theory would prove incorrect, which was why he had to make his sister completely his before the servants came back. Now, no one could separate them. But his fears proved unnecessary; all he needed to do was put another couple zeroes on their paychecks.
He enlisted the three servants that arrived just after five in the morning to help him. They cleaned his sister’s room, rethreaded the cords on the curtains, brought new lamps in to replace the broken ones, and managed to get all the stains out of the carpet and sheets. All the while never asking what had gone on in the room or where Miss Kelly was. Then they took their generous checks and left, never to be heard from again.
Getting his sister a doctor was a little more difficult, but not impossible. He told the man he finally settled on a lie that was not far from the truth, that his twin was involved in a very dangerous relationship that needed to be kept under wraps. Marcus just watched over the doctor’s shoulder as he treated the still unconscious Kelly. Initially he was worried about the various injuries, until he began examining the vaginal trauma. Whenever the man seemed uncertain or wanted to get another opinion, Marcus would mention the generous donation his family wanted to give the hospital and the doctor would quietly go back to work. Though, when the doctor finally left, he suggested that Marcus get his sister some seriously psychiatric treatment if that was the sort of thing she was in to.
However, dealing with Liara when she came looking for Kelly was the most annoying part. Liara did not like him, and he had some suspicion that she was in his twin’s confidence. Fortunately, Liara came with another one of Kelly’s friends, Jasmine, who had the most obvious attraction to him and seemed to lose all sense the second he spoke to her.
When the women showed up, he had his butler invite them in and show them to a nice room overlooking the garden where they were served coffee and pastries. It seemed like politeness, but Marcus really just liked to show how superior his life was with the beautiful room and the multiple servants attending to him. The two women sat across from him on a couch, while he took a comfortable armchair. His day was going so well that he did not even have to force a smile as he dealt with them.
Liara was a severe looking woman, though very pretty with her blonde hair and brown eyes. There was clearly a very nice, athletic body under the turtleneck and jeans. Next to her, Jasmine was very waiflike, small and supple, with her brown hair falling nearly to her knees and her black eyes following his every movement.
“We were actually looking for Kelly,” Liara said after the servant set down the drinks and exited the room. “She’s not answering her phone and didn’t show up last night.”
“She went to Europe with our father,” Marcus lied.
“Since when?” Liara asked, surprise clearly showing on her face. “She didn’t tell us about this.”
“Kelly left last night. It was very spur of the moment after father called. I think he offered her a shopping spree in Paris or something,” Marcus said with a flippant wave of his hand as he reached out and picked up his cup.
“It must be nice to be rich,” Jasmine said with a wistful sigh as she continued looking around the room, but Liara was not buying it.
“So, she went off to Paris last night without even calling to cancel our plans?” she said, frowning.
Marcus shrugged and took a sip of his coffee. “It’s been a while since she had some quality time with our father. He’s usually in meetings. I think she was a little jealous that I get to spend so much time with him.”
The last part was true, just to make the whole scenario seem a little more realistic. Judging from the thoughtful little nod Liara gave and the tension seeping from her shoulders, it was working.
Liara’s dislike of him was so visceral, that Marcus had been concerned she was a lesbian trying to seduce his sister. Only the information his spy provided, that she had a boyfriend of three years and a one-year-old son, convinced him not to immediately sever the friendship between her and his twin. Though, if she continued to be a thorn in his side he would have no problem changing his mind.
A cellphone rang and Liara snatched it out of her pocket, apologizing that it was her sitter’s ring and she needed to take the call. She got up from the couch and walked over to the corner of the room to answer. Jasmine took the time to look up shyly and smile at Marcus, which he returned.
“You have a very nice home,” she said, trying to make conversation. “I know Kelly really likes it here.”
Marcus smiled a little brighter than he needed at the comment. “I’m very glad to hear that. We’ve always tried to make it very comfortable for her hear.”
Jasmine nodded and bit at her lip, looking around again. “You know, you’re not really anything like how Kelly describes you.”
“And how is that?” Marcus asked, the smile remaining on his lips.
“Jasmine, I got to go,” Liara broke in, snapping the phone closed and walking back to them. “My sitter is an idiot and I need to go home and fire her ass before she ends up killing my child.”
“Oh,” Jasmine said, looking up at Liara and then glancing over at Marcus with a little longing look. “I guess we should head out then.”
“My driver can take you home,” Marcus offered, earning a hard look from Liara and one of delight from Jasmine. “It sounds as if you need to get home as quickly as possible, and Jasmine and I were having such a nice conversation.”
Liara pursed her lips, blatant distrust in her eyes as she shook her head. “You okay with that, Jas?”
“Oh, yes,” Jasmine said, and Marcus smirked.
“Fine, but call me when you get home,” Liara said, patting Jasmine gently on the shoulder before looking over at Marcus. “It was nice seeing you again, Marcus. Tell Kelly to call me when you talk to her.”
“I will,” Marcus lied again. “Good luck with your babysitter.”
Liara grumbled at that as she left the room, and Marcus was a little annoyed that she had been in his home enough times she did not need a servant to escort her out. If he allowed Kelly to contact her again, he would need to set specific ground rules.
He looked back at Jasmine. “You were saying something about how Kelly talked about me?”
“Oh, yes,” she said with a nod and a little nervous laugh. “She says you’re very stern and sort of a workaholic. And, well, that you’re very mean to her. But, that’s the sort of thing any sister would say about her brother. I don’t think you’re any of that. I can tell you love Kelly a lot.”
Marcus favored her with a tight smile, certain he would begin to laugh if he opened his mouth. Jasmine continued to babble on for a while, recounting how she met his twin in a Shakespeare class and were assigned a project together. He nodded whenever was appropriate and finished his coffee, setting it on the table when he was done and standing up.
“You probably have something else to do,” Jasmine said, watching him as he walked over to the window. With his father gone he was without any specific business obligations and he had not chosen to take classes over the summer, but he did not share that with Jasmine. He was tired of her. She seemed to have no real interesting information on his sister that he did not already know. Mostly, he just wanted to go and see if Kelly was awake yet, which he could not do while her friend was here, so he let Jasmine make excuses for her departure.
“I’m very sorry,” Jasmine continued, picking up her cup and his and putting it on the tray in the center of the table. “Um, please tell your sister I said hello when you talk to her. I’m guessing this means she’s not thinking of moving out with me anymore, but she seemed pretty hesitant. I’d never move out of a place like this.”
Jasmine’s curious glance around the room was the only thing that spared her from seeing the murderous gaze Marcus turned on her. “Kelly was going to move in with you?” he asked after a moment, when he could keep the venom from bleeding into his voice.
“We talked about it sometimes, and I tried to convince her it would be awesome to be roommates, but she’s never really been willing to do it,” Jasmine said, looking over at him and giving him a smile, oblivious to how much he wanted to smash her face into the glass table.
“I see,” Marcus finally said, taking a deep breath and reminding himself there were better ways to handle the situation than violence. Ways that he could eliminate Jasmine’s interference and break his twin’s will all the more.
He walked over and sat down next to Jasmine, trying to keep his smile from turning into a sneer when she blushed and scooted coyly away. “It’s been very nice talking to you, Jasmine,” he said, reaching out and caressing her shoulder with the tips of his fingers as he caught a few strands of her long hair. “You have such lovely hair. I always tell Kelly she should grow hers out long like this if she wants to attract a boyfriend.”
“You like long hair?” Jasmine asked, the blush growing on her cheeks as she shifted uncomfortably in her seat.
“Very much,” Marcus replied, inching closer to her and letting his arm fall on the back of the sofa, twirling the lock of hair around his fingers. “Since you’re here, Kelly was supposed to go with me to a benefit for some charity that our family works with the day after tomorrow.”
“Looks like she spaced on a lot of things,” Jasmine said, looking down at her lap and biting her lip as she folded her hands.
“Well, you’re a lovely woman, and I’m sure you’d look beautiful in an evening gown,” he continued, reaching out and patting her thigh with his free hand in a friendly gesture that lingered too long. “Why don’t you come,” he let the word linger a moment and smirked at the catch of her breath as he finished, “with me?”
“Excuse me,” Jasmine squeaked as she leapt to her feet. Her face was bright read as she turned and looked down at Marcus, still seated on the couch. “I –um, I would love to com –uh, go with you,” she said hastily, wringing her hands.
“Great. My driver will take you home, so he knows where you live, and we will pick you up on Saturday at six sharp,” Marcus said, waving for the butler that had come to fetch the tray to show her out and send her with a driver. “Always lovely to see you, Jasmine.”
“Yeah,” she said, in a daze as she followed after the servant.
Marcus wondered how his sister always managed to make such weak-willed friends, before remembering that was the only sort he allowed her to have.
