Chapter 5
"Yes" I mumbled under my breath. I heard another chuckle and saw Cale walk past my door.
He was waiting by my door the whole time?! He heard me. He heard me say I like him. Do I care? Should I care?
I jumped off my bed and searched for Cale.
"Cale?" I whispered.
"If you\'re looking for Cale, you might want to speak up".
I turned around to see Wade in the doorway of his bedroom.
"Oh. Hi, Wade"
"Hey"
"..........So, do you know where he is?"
"Who?"
"Cale"
"Oh, right. You\'re looking for him" he took a deep breath through his nose and wrinkled his face.
"Oh. Now I know why you want to find him"
"Excuse me?"
"You smell like him"
"..Oh"
He turned around back to his room and closed the door.
"Wait, Wade!" I called. I ran to his door and opened it.
"Think you could knock first?"
"Well, I....Do you know where Cale is?"
"Geez, desperate, are we?"
"Why are you being such a jerk?"
He paused. "I\'m sorry. I just wanted to talk to you. But I understand if you want to go back to making out with Cale. He\'s upstairs."
"You....you wanted to talk to me?"
He nodded. "Yep"
"Why? What about?"
"I don\'t know. Why do I have to have a reason when Cale doesn\'t, even if the only part of you he is getting to know is your mouth"
I blushed heavily.
"I....Never Mind. What did you want to talk about?"
"You"
"What about me?"
He shrugged. "Your life before I met you. What type of girl you were in school, that kind of stuff"
"Um. Okay..I guess I was kind of the artistic loner type of girl. I always hung out in the art room."
"Painting?"
I shook my head. "Sculpting."
His eyes widened in disbelief. "Seriously?"
I nodded.
"Wow, that\'s awesome. What type of stuff did you sculpt?"
"Mostly nude people. Speaking of which, I had a deadline yesterday."
Wade chuckled. "Sorry. I guess you were in the wrong place and the wrong time. So, are you good at sculpting?"
"Good enough to have a deadline during Thanksgiving break. I had to have my piece turned into the museum downtown yesterday."
His eyes widened in shock. "Are you serious? That good?"
"No. Well, I am serious, but it\'s a gallery for the High School. A lot of kids have work in there."
"Oh."
"So, what about you? What were you like in High School?"
He shrugged.
"Were you a nerd, or a goth, or an emo, or a jock, or a prep?"
"We didn\'t have labels like those when I was in High School"
This confused me.
"I thought you said that you met Elliot in High School. In any time other than this one it would have been completely unacceptable for him to be calling himself bisexual."
"I did meet him in High School. I just didn\'t tell you the whole story." He sat down on his bed and cleared his throat. I sat down next to him.
"I was changed in 1926. I had just moved here from Washington. I had no friends except Katie, the girl who bit me. Then, about a year after I changed Cale and Vincent, we moved to New Hampshire. At the time, it wasn\'t uncommon for kids to not be in school, so we got jobs and then moved again about 5 years later. We couldn\'t stay in the same area for a long period of time or else people who wonder why we weren\'t aging. We moved all over: Tennessee, Oklahoma, Florida, Oregon, North Dakota, Colorado, Wisconsin, Maine. We stayed in the warmer states for less than a year, though. Too much sunshine would also point us out, since we\'re so pale.
"But then we moved back here about 5 years ago, since everyone we knew last time we were here was already dead. Nowadays, it\'s less common for kids our age to be out of school, so we decided it would be a good idea to enroll in school again. That\'s when we met Elliot."
"Wait" I said, "You\'ve known Cale and Vincent for 80 or so years, and Cale for 5?"
"Yep. Anymore questions?"
"Nope. I\'m hungry. See ya!" I jumped off his bed and waved goodbye, then ran up the stairs. Sure enough, there was Cale sitting on the couch.
"Hey, where were you?" he asked, "I thought you\'d be right behind me after I spied on you back there."
I shrugged. "I dunno. I asked Wade where you were, and then he wanted to talk, so I talked to him for a bit, and now here I am."
"Wade, huh? Sorry I wasn\'t there to rescue you."
"Rescue me? What\'s so bad about Wade? Tell me, why do you hate him so much?"
Cale walked closer to me and wrapped his arm around my waist.
"He\'s so boring" he said, looking up at the ceiling.
"Uh huh..." I giggled, pulling on his collar for him to look down at me, "And could it also be that you\'re jealous?"
"Jealous?!" he finally looked down at me.
"Yep."
"Of what?"
"That\'s I\'m grateful that he carried me to my room"
"Oh my God, that still?!"
"I could have froze to death" I quoted Maggie, giggling.
"Oh, you\'re asking for it."
I ran down the hallway towards the stairs, giggling, but Cale caught me once I was halfway down. He tackled me down to the ground, though gently, and straddled my tummy while he tickled me.
"Cale.....stop....get...off" I said between giggles. I struggled to get free and he wouldn\'t budge.
That\'s when Wade came up the stairs.
He just stared at me, and I stared back at him, somehow feeling guilty to be seen like this. Cale simply gave Wade a quick glance, then proceeded to plant kisses along the edge of my jaw and down to my collarbone.
"Cale!" I giggled, surprised by his gesture. Wade continued down the hall as if he hadn\'t seen anything happen.
"Cale!" I said, attempting to get him off of me. It was hard for me to be serious when I was enjoying every bit of my "torture".
"Cale" I finally managed to say sternly. I grabbed his shoulders and pushed him off of me. I hauled myself off the floor and lightly jogged down the hall after Wade.
"Wade" I shouted. I turned into the kitchen to see him holding an apple.
"Hi" I said.
"Hi" he said.
I looked down at the apple in his hand.
"W-what are you doing with that?" I asked.
"What? This?" He held up the apple.
I nodded. "I thought you didn\'t eat human food".
"Oh. I...I don\'t know, I um..I was getting it for Maggie". He said.
"Who said my name?" Maggie shouted from the hall. She popped her head into the kitchen and walked in to stand next to me.
"Uh...this apple" Wade said, "The...You said you wanted an apple. Here" He gave her the apple and walked passed us. I heard the trap door creak and shut again.
Maggie shrugged and bit into the apple.
I shrunk into a chair at the kitchen table. "I don\'t think he likes me very much" I murmured.
Maggie scoffed, chewing a bit of all apple. She leaned against the wall across from me, "You kidding me?" She asked, "Why\'d you think he came upstairs? To eat? No, he wanted to see you".
"Me? Why?"
"I don\'t know, maybe because he likes you."
"Well, if he came upstairs to see me, why didn\'t he go back downstairs after he saw Cale and I?"
"And admit defeat? No." Maggie said, biting into the apple, "That\'d just show Cale that he has what Wade wants, and that it bothers him. Cale would never let him live it down. In fact, if Cale knew Wade liked you, he\'d probably kiss you every time Wade was in the house."
I blushed. "Cale doesn\'t \'have me\'. I\'m not his."
"Sure. But of course, you wouldn\'t mind him kissing you every time Wade was in the house, since Wade\'s in this house a lot. You like Cale, don\'t you?"
My eyes widened. "I...what?"
"Yep. Just remember what I said, though. Don\'t give him your heart."
"But..I thought you loved Vincent."
"I do. But it\'s very complicated with me being a human and him being a vampire. I\'d rather you not have to go through that." She tossed the bare apple core into the trash and washed her hands, giving me a break to think.
Does she regret meeting Vincent? Does she miss her normal life?
"Hey, baby." I heard someone say. I looked up to see Vincent hug Maggie from behind while she was washing her hands.
"Oh, Vincent!" She turned around and grabbed his cheeks, pulling him closer and planting her lips on his.
"Aw, Mags, your hands are all wet" Vincent said, wiping his face with a nearby cloth.
Maggie giggled, "Sorry."
"That\'s okay" He kissed her forehead. "So, are you ready?"
"Yeah. Oh, Emilia, I\'m going to go to the movies with Vince. I\'ll talk to you later. Oh, and think about what I told you" She said, and walked out of the kitchen.
"What\'d you tell her?" I heard Vincent say as they walked out the front door.
"There you are"
I turned my head towards the hallway to see Cale.
"I\'ve been looking for you. Why did you run off?"
"Oh. Uh, no reason. Why were you looking for me? You knew I was in here."
"Yeah...." He said, "But I didn\'t know if you were still in here."
I gave him a look. "You were feeding, weren\'t you?"
He shrugged. "A guys gotta eat."
He was waiting by my door the whole time?! He heard me. He heard me say I like him. Do I care? Should I care?
I jumped off my bed and searched for Cale.
