Chapter Three
-Spying-
~Erynh~
“What the crap is going on?” I asked Eryka, my twin sister, coming up behind her and settling down on the stair steps at her side. She scruffed her dark hair out of her face and glanced at Tyler.
Tyler laValian, one of the Royal Guard and one of our Personal Guards, knelt behind my sister, to our right so as not be seen in the shadows behind us. His black shirt, tunic, and trousers, along with his black, rough leather boots- night watch uniform- hid him well. Not even the pale light glinting off his golden curls or the gleam of his silvery green eyes gave him away.
I glanced to my left just in time to watch his twin brother, Joshua, also dressed in the night watch uniform, slide into the shadows behind me, where even my eyes could not catch a glimpse of him, for all his face’s paleness. His snow white hair swallowed light and reflected back nothing, swathing all that was not clothed in black with the shadows of the dimly lit Hall.
Beside me, the mage-in-training, Kayli, fell effortlessly into a cross-legged position, like a billowing cloud of midnight green linen as her long tunic flared around her with the up-rush of air. She merely dropped her chin into her small palm and watched with silent but avid curiosity as the adults milled around beneath our vantage point. Her silver hair reflected no light either. Her dreamy, silver-gray eyes were dimmed to stormy gray clouds. What parts of her the green tunic did not conceal were covered with tight, sheer black cloth- long sleeve shirt, hose, stockings, and gloves. Only the tiny moonstone studs in her ears caught any of the Silver Orb’s light, reflecting it like stars in the night sky, like the other chips of moonstone pressed into the high, nytewood ceiling above our heads.
The five of us, my twin sister and I, our two guards, and Kayli, their younger sister, we were not supposed to be here. This was a meeting for the adults of our Pack, not for us. We’d all had to sneak our way to this secluded vantage point high above the proceedings. If we were caught, we’d be in serious trouble with the Queen.
If we were caught, we’d be in some serious trouble with our Mother.
Ask me if that ever stopped us.
“What’s going on?” I repeated quietly, settling onto my stomach to peer over the stair landing the ringed the upper story of the Den.
“No idea,” my sister Eryka replied cheerfully, smiling her big, pearly smile full of long, pointed teeth. Her eyes, which were a beautiful hazel green, flashed gold, glinting with animal eye shine, and her black pupils momentarily turned silver before returning to normal. “But don’t worry about it.”
Don’t worry about it, she says. Don’t worry, when for the first time in over 12 moons a full council meeting has been called. Don’t worry, when our thirteenth birthday approaches in less than 6 moons. Don’t worry, when they’re going to be talking about us. Don’t worry. Of course not, I thought.
